Just gonna copy my post from the other Sonic 2 thread in Video Games.
So, I just saw it today (last night) with a friend of mine, and we both loved it.
Tails' and Knuckles looked really good, as in the fur texturing worked out spectacularly, the animations were fantastic. The voice actors for Tails ans Knuckles were spot on, but especially so with Idris Elba. I hope he gets to stick around for as long as these Sonic movies are here, because he fucking nails it. I hope they both do.
Jim Carrey was even better in this one than the first movie. In the last quarter, I certainly got that "OK, he's a genuine threat now" vibe and not goofy villain. A full next level step up, both in power, ingenuity and his madness.
The story was actually really good. I want to know more about the Echidna/Owl war.
I didn't even hate the wedding scenes as much as I thought I would. It was clear they needed some way to introduce GUN and this was probably the least painful way they could have gone about it. Yeah, they easily stand out amongst the movie but they were funny in their own right.
Speaking of GUN, the moment I spotted the logo on their badges, before they even told which division they were; I kinda had a little fan boy moment and wondered if they'd hint to Shadow.
I look forward to seeing what they can do with Shadow due to the established story. I don't know a person alive that liked or even gave two shits about Black Doom, so they can entirely scrap that portion of their story if they like.
I'm also wondering if at what point they may introduce other threats. I don't think I spotted any easter eggs referencing Perfect Chaos, but if the movies go beyond 3, I'd like to see it, and maybe even Metal Sonic get thrown into the fray.
A bunch of kids cheered during Shadow reveal. Hearing kids happy to see these characters that I'd grown up with gave me a smile.
All in all, I'd give the movie a solid 8.5/10, and my friend said the same. A genuinely fun movie with a few minor flaws and breaks in the kind of action that you actually want to see, as well as missed opportunities for easter eggs.
The kind of action that you do want to see, when it goes, it goes hard.
These movies are being made by people who clearly have a passion for what they're doing, and right now theyre 2 for 2. They're nailing it.
Horror Sonic is long in the past at this point and there's no need to continue to hold it over their heads anymore.
I'm looking forward to watching Sonic The Hedgehog 3 in the future.
