Release a trailer with a horrible looking Sonic so that EVERYBODY talks about it for several weeks, then change to the "new" design so the problem is solved and the whole world knows about this movie coming out.
Anyone else thinks that's the case?

Well, it was a huge hit and one of Sony's most profitable movies of that year.
Why? Because everyone saw it "ironically" to make fun of it.
Sony didn't care about the reasoning while they were counting the millions.

People will go to see the Sonic movie and laugh at it, Paramount will be happy.

As bad as it was, I highly doubt The Emoji Movie didn't have the "Current Year" political baggage that Ghostbusters 2016 had.

The redesigned Sonic makes me think that Paramount wants to make this work, and while I think it's probably going to suck, it could turn out to be "So Bad It's Good" or maybe turn out to be an okay but ultimately forgettable movie.

I think that the success of Detective Pikachu may have played a role in the decision to redesign Sonic.

Detective Pikachu was probably the first live-action video game movie adaptation that successfully beat the odds and it did well with fans and the audience, was financially successful, and didn't get thrashed by the critics.

Sorry but Nu-sonic looks like a Plasticine ghoul. Old one just looks adorably crappy and I hope the cut of the movie with it leaks at some point.

Admittedly this is largely due to the glorious maymes we all made about it when it came out
