Actually, it does. I've been hired for salaried positions pretty much my whole professional life. All have let me know ahead of time that forty is just an average, some days will be "as long as it takes," and likewise we had flexibility to duck out early when we needed to. We were professionals, and nobody logged hours or anything. If your work was getting done well, that's all that mattered.
Like I said, we knew this all full well going in, it was a major discussion during interviews. Our offices were more interested in recruiting and retaining good talent. Which, honestly, is how I read that short, vague little question. It sounded to me like he wanted to see those employees develop a sense of camaraderie, not squeeze them for money. Emotionally invested employees are retained talent you aren't afraid of losing to another business. It's not ALL about money.
