He will be helped by his old friends donkey, puss n boots and some new friends including death who is trying to clear his name of being a homesexual porn star who eats people whole and a brand new friend

Haven't seen any, so I'm referring just to the title of the first one, but Lord Farquaad was definitely a competent ruler. Duloc looked clean, well-maintained and even modern in some areas, while it's residents exhibited no symptoms of famine, poverty or disease. Of course, this was all just a light comedic setting, so no reason to take things too seriously.
