Yeah, I think Jimmy Kimmel put Dom Monaghan in touch with Don after they met when Lost was still filming, and that's how he got involved with The Big 3. Just goes to show how few degrees of separation there were between Perry and people who actually mattered in "show business." But there's only so many people who don't have to care about managing their image for getting involved with Perry to make any kind of sense. It's surprising how game he was for all the crazy shit that was going on at that time. I think he even showed up for the "System" trial that they held to get Perry off the Hollywood blacklist.

In a better worldline than this, sure. But the only one who has ever wanted to be that involved in his affairs is Tom, who is basically his de facto conservator. It's somehow an even more abusive and schizophrenic dynamic than Eugene Landy and Brian Wilson, but unlike Wilson, Perry doesn't have friends and loved ones who will put their differences aside for long enough to get him out of the clutches of his abuser. As fucked up as it is, Don Barris is probably the closest thing Perry ever had to a real friend in that town - and he's washed his hands of the whole situation. I don't know what it would take to make Perry a ward of the state at this point, but that's probably the last opportunity he has to find a tard wrangler who might not abuse him before it's just out on the streets.

As for comedy, the fame-bug has always been with him - he was always chasing after celebrity even before that first car accident scrambled his brains. In another life, he probably still would have wasted several years of his life as an X-Games hanger-on and then a wannabe actor. He might have been smart enough to tell RC to go fuck himself; maybe that would have been enough to tilt the trajectory of his life in a more positive direction. We can only speculate.

If Tom is Perry’s conservator, and I would accept that more or less, it should be addressed that Perry lost his disability about a year before PCL came about, and he wouldn’t have been able to pay for his rent, utilities, or anything. He probably would be homeless. As much of a turd as Tom is, there is a raw truth that there was a time that Perry very much needed him and nobody else in his life, not his family, not Don, not Jimmy Kimmel; all these people who had abused him for years actively decided to let him rot. It’s not a comfortable truth, but the videos from the events at his apartment this week don’t provide the whole context of what is going on.

I’m not aware of Tom having stoled any Big 3 merch, he was brought into the Perry Project by Don and for the first few years wasn’t really getting paid anything (except for packages of merch from VIP Big 3 followers). While I agree that Tom probably is getting a significant cut of PCL paypigs’ $, I’m pretty sure he never received a great deal of money before that. He’s still got a day job.

I’m not trying to white knight this situation, I just think there is a lot of speculation and misinformation. I’ve been listening to the Big Three Podcast since 2012 at least, I live in LA, I’ve met everyone involved, and I’ve seen pretty much everything happen in real time. So I have a pretty well tuned filter for what’s real and what’s not. And I don’t particularly care for anyone, although I have sympathy for Perry because of his brain injury.

With more information I'm in turn presenting as facts with no evidence, because I'm not autistic enough to fetch everything. I've also been following the Big 3 since they started the podcast on Carolla's website. I've attended events and met people, and participated on message boards to a limited extent, mostly lurking though. I say all this as my hearsay evidence that I'm not just making things up, take that as you will.

Tom was not really brought in by Don. He weaseled his way into Perry's life and then contacted Don basically saying that he can wrangle Perry for him. Initially Don dismissed him entirely, he talked about this situation on an early podcast, mentioned Tom's name directly, and basically made fun of him. Tom must have proved his worth somehow as eventually he did start making appearances here and there, and eventually became a larger presence.

Fast forward to Tom's stealing and selling content - he reached out to Big 3 pay pigs (I was one, still am I guess if you count the premium page) and sold Big 3 digital content, not physical merch. Guessing he got that as compensation from Don, then turned it into monetary compensation. There's copies of Tom's emails that were posted this week on the Reddit. And I didn't say it was significant cash, but it was posited as going to a fund to help Perry with bills. This did not all come just from Tom's pocketbook, a lot of it was probably from the fans. It's possible some of it was from Tom's pocketbook.

I think we are probably following Perry along parallel tracts. I think it’s impossible to watch the various genii of the Perry Project without getting hopelessly lost in the the lore of it. So much of the foundation of it took place before Internet 1.0 which is why when I started lurking on the Farms in 2014 I always thought there should be a Perry thread but it took until PCL for it to take off.

I’m going to have to say potato/potahto here. I agree that Tom did everything he could to ingratiate himself with Don, but the truth was that Don needed Tom (or someone like him) so Perry wouldn’t have all his energy/hate directed at Don 100% of the time. Tom pretended to be Perry’s friend, which is shitty, but I don’t think it was worse than anything else people had done to him for much longer. I don’t know, but I would want to be paid to have to put up with the daily nonsense he must have to deal with being around Perry (no wonder he lives in NY).

You do know that Tom had nothing to do with WCH and he didn’t even show up until over a decade after that movie which was a decade after 1992 and we are currently a decade past the time when Tom showed up. I find the whole “It’s all Tom’s fault” arguments to be extremely reductive and dumb.

It wasn't just Tom. Tom had the chance to make Perry into a modestly successful e-celeb if nothing else, and blew it due to his own hubris and incompetence. But until PCL went online, Perry basically had nothing going on in terms of his "entertainment career." The Big 3 podcast was practically defunct at that point for reasons I'm not entirely clear on, but he already wanted nothing to do with it once the JQH-Tom storyline was underway - they pushed him too hard with the homosexual-rape angle and it was a line they couldn't walk back. Outside of the podcast, he hadn't landed any real work in years, and even then his only successes in "show businesses" was a few bit parts in movies nobody remembers and in part of the prison dance scene from Austin Powers, and because he's brain damaged he probably couldn't handle the choreography and didn't get to appear in the dance itself. Tom helped to squander the potential of Perry on Twitch, but the one most responsible for Perry's failures to achieve anything is Perry himself. If he didn't start suing everybody he'd ever worked with he might have been able to actually do something with his SAG membership and supplement his income with money from regular background character parts. He wouldn't have had to rely on Don and Mole for Ten Dollar Shoutout dono bucks to get by, and he wouldn't have put himself in a position where he was vulnerable to a creep like Tom insinuating himself into his life. Perry doesn't deserve to be abused and taken advantage of by this fat queer but he got to this point through years of personal failures that can't be blamed on anyone else.

It was basically two things: Don and Perry were no longer on speaking terms and then COVID hit and they had zero physical connection. Perry lost his disability and Tom swooped in like a shitbird of prey.

Extremely debatable. I don’t know what the limited extent of the PCL Twitch stream is, but it has steady numbers in terms of viewers. It has a certain “You just can’t look away” aspect to it that I think you have to tip your cap to.

I’m not sure where I missed out on his Twitch Stream being booted (though that makes sense given the content and Twitch TOS). I honestly only watched the clip, I hardly go on Twitch and if I did watch the stream it would be live or in clips. Thinking about it now I would say it was inevitable that Tom would run into a mistake like that. If there is any justice the stream would fade into nothingness, but as long as people keep paying PCL in shit food and donos to play in Perry’s Spergatory.

The Perry Project has been 30+ years of a brain damaged sperg getting violated for yucks. The difference between The Big Three to PCL is that TB3 had a business model of abuse has been flipped around is a way that Don doesn’t have control of the content/purse strings. I try to be neutral in all this. After TB3 fell apart I basically thought Perry was done and the chance of their being a thread on him here was not going to happen. I find the entertainment quality of PCL minimal (although I have a soft spot for Perry sperging about his snowboard and all things “going in the snow” related).

I agree the thread has been mostly limping along (though thank you for the job you’ve been doing @BrunoMattei for keeping it alive). I don’t know where it goes from here, but there has to be some fallout from Tom B Week 2.

Perry has been physically restrained by Don and Mole and others but it was always after Perry struck first or bit someone (usually biting someone on the arm) which justifies the use of force with Perry but even then they were considerably gentle to Perry. It's not just that Perry's old but he's had blood clots removed that really fucked up his balance. That whole thing was documented in a podcast and happened around 2012 or something like that.

At least in the early days Perry loved doing the Big 3 stuff, or at least he thought it was great after the fact. There were a couple of times the podcast almost got canceled, and when it came back Don would mention Perry calling him and saying how much he wanted to do another show. Perry loves/loved Windy City Heat, being the star of a real movie was a dream come true for him. I also know Perry loved doing the live shows and meeting fans because he liked to feel famous. The public access show, the movie, and most of the Big 3 Podcast were a Make-A-Wish gift to a brain-damaged guy who's dream was to be famous, not a violation or abuse, or anything sinister like that.

I don't know exactly when it changed. It seemed like Perry didn't want to do the reboot of the podcast, and was just showing up because Tom made him, and to sell skateboards. In lots of the later Simply Don calls it seemed like Perry was really into just being a Javaho and staying out of showbusiness. At some point the Perry stuff switched from the golden age I have in my memory to something bad and exploitative, But I do think that the golden age was there.

The video of Don and Mole showing Perry WCH for the first time is like a distilled version of the early Big 3 stuff. It's full of annoying Perry until he starts screaming and getting pissed off, but it's also got friendship and joy, and it really doesn't seem exploitative to me at all. Perry loves the movie, he's annoyed by Don and Mole, it's great content that couldn't be scripted, and I can't imaging Perry going to bed upset over what happened during the showing. Almost none of the stream moments are anything like the WCH first showing. Some of the early donation pranks were pretty light-hearted, maybe the first year of the live shows were similar to the good days of the Big 3, but the streams got dark fast and have stayed that way.

Anybody who thinks the whole project was just abuse and exploitation is entitled to their opinion, but I can't imagine watching the first showing and coming away thinking the same thing. I also wish I had timestamps of all the times they mentioned Perry saying how much he loved doing the Big 3 stuff on the podcast, but it's just too much to sift through.
