I think it punches both ways. The Japanese have to give approval as well. Otherwise they'd be whoring out Sora everywhere
They kind of are in a way, KH merch tends to come in yearly waves and while Sora isn't necessarily a main feature he does get some love form that department. Hell, Funko released four POPs based off of KH characters (Xehannort, Roxas and Xion in their Organization XIII coats, and Lingering Will) last year, the Disney Parks have been getting a Keyblade-themed Pin of the Month since January, and there's been a lot of requests for introducing KH into Lorcana. And you can't forget the KH Fortnite rumors, those are still going strong.

That said if KH inclusion in Super Smash Bros. is any indication the real stick-in-the-anus is Nomura and his "need" to fit certain crossovers into KH's canon.
Now c'mon dont you want to fight the Boss Baby's Nobody? or the AntZ heartless?
You want to fight an infant that's clad in a white latex gimp suit?

That's honestly pretty tame. I was thinking more about how pervasive marvel and Star wars stuff is these days. Your not drowning in content and that makes it feel special and given proper attention to detail.

I thought it was Disney? They had to remove all the Disney characters. What was the source?

It's kind of amazing the series isn't in IP Hell. Square and Disney have to fully sign off, both being a pain in the ass to work with, and the music company the intro singer is signed to always had said no to digital because they didn't want to renegotiate her contract for digital rights/royalties.

I think that’s in part to due to how much money Disney’s sunk into acquiring both IPs and shifting them into what Disney thinks is a “wide-reaching” IP.

According to this article from The Escapist (which was taken from a Game Informer interview) Nomura said he was the biggest hurdle in adding KH to Smash Bros Ultimate. The two main factors in his mind being clashes between the established lore found in both Smash Bros and KH and the possible inclusion of Disney worlds, the latter of which would have been an issue due to Sakurai’s rule about non-video game characters. In stark contrast Disney was all in on Sora being added to Smash Bros. from the get-go.

Replace them with characters from another major media company.

the most impressive bit of work was done by fuckin Masahiro Sakurai getting them to sign off on Sora being in Smash.

You could tell Square-Enix didn't want to go all in with that paltry amount of music Sora came with. You could argue that Banjo was a similar deal, but he got multiple remixes in addition to old tunes.
That’s because rights issues and the previously-mentioned Disney worlds issue, Nintendo would have to get permission from Walt Disney Records to remix any of the tracks and they’re restricted to tracks that aren’t explicitly tied to a Disney world.

The banter between the characters would be a fuck-ton more enjoyable, that's for sure.

Daffy's voice alone would be an improvement and his sarcasm is better than Donald's constant temper. That, plus Daffy + Porky have always been paired up in the cartoons, so it would feel more like a natural team-up. Anytime Goofy + Donald get paired up, they are always with Mickey, so in a way it kinda feels off because it's like they are missing the third member of their trio that Sora definitely does NOT fit into.

Honestly I think it could still work really well. You still need worlds and exploration, but Disney has gotten a lot more stagnant and less engaging as the franchise went on due to restrictions. 1-2 were awesome because there was a large degree of flexibility allowed. Once we got into 3 shit got really complicated and bad because there was a lot of back and forth.
The fact there was no FF stuff in KH3 really killed a lot of my buzz. Also no real Maleficent and Pete when they had been set up as some sort of Big Bads for a while, and the whole thing felt like a bizarre and unpleasant mix of a Xehanort wank-off and Disney advertisement considering you had all of those terrible attraction moves and that ridiculous god-awful "Let it go" scene in its fucking entirety.

"Let it go" yeah I'm about ready to let the chair go and have the noose spare me further suffering.

Let's give Dreamworks a fair shot here, bear with me. I can see some of their IP's clicking with KH's overall story and themes:

- Best shot:
Shrek
How to Train your Dragon
Rise of the Guardians
Kung Fu Panda
Megamind
Monsters vs Aliens

- Could probably squeeze something in:
Trolls
Road to El Dorado
The Bad Guys
Antz
Simbad
The Prince of Egypt
Spirit

- Fuck no:
Chicken Run
Flushed Away
The Croods
Boss Baby
Ruby Gillman
Turbo
Home

- No but do it anyways:
Penguins of Madagascar
Over the Hedge
Shark Tale
Bee Movie

So that's my tier list of which Dreamworks' franchises would work best in Kingdom Hearts, guys. Make sure to let me know how your own list would look down below in the comments.

Smash that Like button, ring the bell, and stay tuned for more autistic content!

But imagine a lightsaber keyblade...... I honestly love Riku's "modern" literal fucking key (blade). In some ways I wish they'd move away from the Disney type shit but I also know that's what grounds the games in terms of gameplay. If not, it'd either be turn-based jrpg slop or some tryhard DMC5 clone, where it's already moving towards.

I'm somewhat replaying KH2 and it's just, mindnumbing. You got these ball-bustingly hard secret bosses in a game where you got 3 choices of offensive tactics: Spam attack, heal and dodge. Even guarding is kind of wonky. I'd like to try all the spin-off games but the card systems etc turns me off massively.

Have you tried using magic and drive forms? Despite memes, just mashing X isn't actually the most optimal way to play all the time. The optional bosses in KH3 are way worse because they're mostly just memorization where you have to dodge or block near-unreactable attacks for 5 minutes or else you just die. KH2 bosses can all be potentially beaten blind so long as you can think of counter strategies on the fly.

The side games all have something weird about the gameplay that makes them more of a hassle to get into than the core games. The cards and the RNG in obtaining them in CoM, or needing to stop playing and craft abilities and play a slow board game mini-game for abilities in BBS, or just the overload of systems and needlessly complicated pet creation and raising systems in DDD that you need to stop and mess with to build your character. Days is relatively straight forward, but the controls kind of suck. Re:coded is the side game with the best spin-off, there's really nothing that obtuse or weird about it, the main issue with that game is just that the story is mostly filler.
