Obsucure anime/manga you enjoy? - After watching some classics like æon flux and The Big O, I figured I should try to see what you guys like.

ROD TV is the direct sequel to the Read Or Die OVAs. What throws most people off of ROD TV is the original OVA cast don't appear until almost midway through the series. Long after those people had already dropped it after watching an episode or two. Coupled with also not playing the OVAs when TechTV* was airing ROD TV for the internet illiterate poor fags. The main characters can control and manipulate paper to use as weapons, shields, and other objects they can think of.

ROD OVA was extremely popular back in the day with anime fans but like so many other older anime in this thread; it just didn't really catch on with western anime casuals, normies and tourists.

*G4TV bought TechTV few years after airing ROD TV, Betterman, Silent Mobius, Soultaker and few others I forgot.

I had no idea it was a sequel, I guess that's why it was hard to follow (missing episodes didn't help). I hope it's easy to find and watch.

"Show don't tell" is a guideline, not a rule.

It is what separates quality from lack thereof. It is something all good writing does at minimal quality. Anime doesn't follow "show don't tell" because they want fanboys to self insert into the characters and pretend to live in the world, which is unhealthy and mentally ill.

Not a power fantasy, a comedy, and people liked it because it's funny and has good fights.

When those "good fights" disappeared in the second season, the mercy went away. Just admit you like flashy action. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's certainly not unique to anime.

The fights are one-sided. God Gundam is ridiculously strong compared to the opponents and they're all tournament battles, so there's less tension (which is more conducive to a power fantasy). The average Brave show is better than this since there is more strategy and more tension (on account of not being a tournament), and even a bit of a story sometimes.

YYK and Dragon Ball have ecchi. YYK even has trap characters. Pokemon female characters tend to be sexualized, Outlaw Star had a lot of fanservice that had to be censored in the TV broadcast, and Samurai Champloo's parents guide shows a lot of warnings for sexual content.

Ninjago has much better writing than the average battle shonen, cope and seethe. Thoughts on the other suggestions? I entertained yours; you have to entertain mine if you want to construct a good response.

Horror. A team of researchers head to a laboratory six kilometers under the sea after it was abandoned for three years due to the mysterious and gruesome deaths of the last team. Only 22 chapters.

Also this might be the thread to ask, I remember reading a manga years ago where a girl fights a shark monster with her sword. I think she cuts it in half. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It was really weird and not fully translated at the time. I've tried to find it again without any luck. I'm pretty sure it was gory, not a shonen.

A bit spoilerish but the ending to episode 14 still gives me goosebumps. A lot of the comments say that Mugen was out for revenge but I'm pretty sure that he was above that, if they had run and hid, Mugen would have just gone with his life.

Lots of stuff here is just obscure because its old but back in the day it was maybe flavor of the month or more like quarter or even year since things moved more slowly in the VHS/DVD/compressed_AF.avi days, but it wasn't obscure. Maybe at first when all you could get were fansubs but then some company would pick it up for western distribution and it would even get a dub.

Like for example AKIRA isn't obscure at all but most zoomers haven't watched it, they don't even know where the 'kaneda slide' reference comes from. Some think uzuzki-whatever-overfiend is obscure but it was all over the place, basically a meme back in the day with all the rape and gore.

Very aesthetic but the stories were kinda cringe at times, like the one with the guy who wanted his friend to be the president. It got a lot of traction just for being one of the rare animes that happen in America instead of Japan, another example being GSC but that one is good no matter what.

Last Exile

That anime had kino designs, they got Range Murata to do all characters and while the guy can get a bit creepy at times with his artbooks his style is top-notch and original, same with Blue submarine No.6. The worldbuilding was also cool, the music, the story was okay. The sequel was godawful trash tho, peak moeshit.

I think Futari Monologue qualifies as obscure if its MAL rankings are any indication. It's a comedy manga about two classmates who reunite after a few years apart. A lot of Kiwis would probably despise it because of its yuri undertones, but I'm a sucker for its specific type of comedy. A lot of the humor relies on two characters having two dialogues within the same conversation, so to speak, where mutual misunderstandings pile up as a conversation goes on. I love that shit. The rest of the comedy comes from one of the main characters being an absolute train wreck of a human being.

Im not sure how obscure these are or not but anything by Masaaki Yuasa in early Studio 4 Degrees days. And Tekkonkinkreet that was done by Studio 4 Degrees. I haven't seen them in ages but they are out there. Devilman Crybaby is probably his most well know work now and he's coming back for a new movie soon.

Tomino of Mobile Suit Gundam, Dunbine and Ideon's weirdest show about organic robots. Jonathon is one of the best antagonists in all of anime. It's kind of flawed but if you love it you love it.

I will say OPM is more goonerbait and FAR from a power fantasy. It'd be a power fantasy if Saitama actually found someone who didn't get raped by one punch and gave him the fight of his life. The nu-manga arguably does this with the awful ending.

I don't understand how Death Note wouldn't be up your alley given crime drama books are all about schizo monologuing and a back and forth of "hah got your nose faggot!" generally followed by a spoonfeeding to the retarded reader.

Gundam is far from a power fantasy but it feels very dated. I guess Gundam : The Origin felt the less schlocky to me, but even then I had moments where I was laughing at the emotional scenes.

No country for old men, Shot caller, Once upon a time in the west, Pulp fiction, Star Wars Revenge of the sith, Star wars Return of the jedi, Gangs of new york, Spongebob the movie, The Good The bad The ugly, The outlaw Josey Wales.

Started going nuts thinking of movies because I don't watch much so that's why I add spongebob. It's infinitely better than any jap production anyways.

Also OG dragon ball sexualizes a 14 year old bulma a lot. Completely turned me off of the show.

Don't know if Zeta Gundam has been mentioned but that's pretty cool. Unfortunately there's a scene with naked toddlers (God knows why) so I recommend watching the edited version.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - Gem of a series
Burn Up eXcess - the best of the entire Burn Up franchise
Witch Hunter Robin - Slow but great.

I never saw any of Read or Die and its completely out of print too. Wasn't Bayonetta's actress in it?
