Obsucure anime/manga you enjoy? - After watching some classics like æon flux and The Big O, I figured I should try to see what you guys like.

Summer Wars is slice of life? It's literally the Digimon movie but with an older cast. Granted, I still liked it. just not sure I'd say it's slice of life.

I'm not much for Anime & Manga, but I really liked Great Pretender. Its a show about con-men, and the first season is just following a couple of their different batshit insane capers. I also loved the soundtrack, it had some great jazz.

I haven't re-watched it, and I heard it got a movie that I haven't seen, but I remember enjoying the show well enough. Also, the English actors got to improv a bit, so I think it makes the dialogue feel a lot more natural. The second seasons I felt got a bit too serious, but was still watchable. As I said, I'm not much for anime, so maybe I'm not really selling it, but it was something I enjoyed and never heard anyone talk about.

Also, they had a pretty unique style for the background art, at least out of what anime I've watched.

It's a bit basic, but I really enjoyed Star Driver. It's a Mecha involving four priestess that keep the a planet destroying robot sealed away in another dimension as an evil organization tries to free it.

Another was spriggan. I know the anime only came out a few years ago, but it's basically a secret organization that attempts to keep ancient artifacts sealed away and out of the hands of other organizations that would use them for their personal gain. The season covers a super organism underneath My. Fuji, Noah's arc, the elixir of immortality, the berserker armor, and a lost civilization trapped between time.
 
Im not sure how obscure these are or not but anything by Masaaki Yuasa in early Studio 4 Degrees days. And Tekkonkinkreet that was done by Studio 4 Degrees. I haven't seen them in ages but they are out there. Devilman Crybaby is probably his most well know work now and he's coming back for a new movie soon.

Tomino of Mobile Suit Gundam, Dunbine and Ideon's weirdest show about organic robots. Jonathon is one of the best antagonists in all of anime. It's kind of flawed but if you love it you love it.

While the subject is brought up, anybody remember an anime about a hot-headed ninja/samurai kid set in feudal Japan (not the most unique), it played on one of those premium TV channels like Starz back in the mid/late 00's? Pretty sure it played on the same channel as Street Fighter II V.

Anyway, hard to know what's obscure aside from the obvious, like stuff on Toonami.

Let's see... Maybe 16-bit Sensation: Another Kayer. It's interesting, not great though. Another is ROD the TV, it had good animation but I barely remember anything about it other than it involving magic cards or something. I liked it but didn't catch it regularly, it was on G4TV back around the mid 00's.

I just recently watched it when I was telling my friend about it she loved it. Definitely aged very well if not got funnier on another watch. I’ll have to also check out your rec.
 
Boys on the Run was once shared in a one page thread in /a/ and it got me hooked. I haven't seen it discussed anywhere else but I liked how raw it was and how uncomfortable it made me feel. It is a "boxing" manga the same way Grand Blue Dreaming is a diving one.
It makes sense why the main character decides to cut his hair like Travis from Taxi Driver.

No one's brought it up yet, but the Gunsmith Cats OVA is great. It's 80's action movies like Lethal Weapon from an anime perspective. Also lots of gun and car autism which I appreciate

The manga adaptation isn't bad, either. Criminally underrated series.

Also speaking of magical girl manga, Corrector Yui is short-ish and sweet, very cool take on the virtual magical girl (that is sadly underutilized).

Subversion of the mecha genre, grown ass men riding giant robots looking like high school girls to fight a war against a rebellious pocket dimension colony. The longer someone spends inside one of the robots, the more their mental state and personality deteriorate. Japanese critics tend to call the authors works pretentious, as there's a lot of philosophical and psychological pondering regarding themes like identity and reality.
Adolf
Osamu Tezuka's most accomplished thriller imo, mostly comparable to works of Naomi Urasawa like Monster. A globe spanning WWII conspiracy following a handful of morally gray protagonists into a labyrinth of secret connections.

Adolf's been dusting on my to-read list for awhile. Homunculus really is fucking peak, Netflix botched it to hell. Atleast the Ichi the Killer movie is good.
I'm not sure if it's really obscure anymore but whoever didn't read Ajin yet is doing a disservice to themselves. And the best part is made by a lolipedo manga illustrator of all people.

Also Joshi looks like tranny shit. Dudes in schoolgirl bodies with identity crisis? :thinking:
 
For anime:

I enjoyed Tsuritama despite it being blatant fujo bait, and the OP rocks.

Was kinda popular at the time, but I also enjoyed Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl, mostly because the chick has turbo 'tism and is cute. Also has a great OP.

Pupipo! Cute and weird, but a little short.

Crest/Banner of the Stars. Space epic with some romance that doesn't adapt the very long novel series but is very underrated.

Manga:

Kuro, by the guy who does Shadow House. Cute and creepy, definitely enjoyed it.

Alien 9 and Alien 9 Emulators. Honestly weird as fuck but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I may post more if I think of some. I used to keep a list of all the manga and anime I read specifically to give recommendations, but I haven't updated it in years and I honestly forgot a lot of the stuff. I think I need to do some rewatches and rereads.
 
If you want ultra obscure (as in, barely documented in English), there's Super Train Ganbari Dash, Jobraver, and the Tomica Hyper Rescue shorts. There's also this really cool Gundam SEED commercial. I like these because I like cheap/old CGI, and they're short -- but even still, it would be incredibly cringe and autistic to watch these as a functional adult; you're not gaining anything from it. All other Japanese animation is pure mental illness, goonerbait, pedophilia, or plain cringe.
 
A lot of good recommendations here. Anyone ever watch Record of Lodoss War. It essentially started as write-ups of a Dungeons and Dragons / Tunnels and Trolls campaign in a PC magazine that they animated. The art is gorgeous. Unfortunately it tries to pack a lot into 13 episodes and it really needed more than that to tell it's story.
 
If you want proof that Japan has shit taste, this is Princess Rouge, an unfinished OVA with so much potential in its story about a princess falling out of the sky, and it just wasn't allowed to.

Skip like a few minutes because it's a VHS recording of the International Channel with commercials still intact.

ROD TV is the direct sequel to the Read Or Die OVAs. What throws most people off of ROD TV is the original OVA cast don't appear until almost midway through the series. Long after those people had already dropped it after watching an episode or two. Coupled with also not playing the OVAs when TechTV* was airing ROD TV for the internet illiterate poor fags. The main characters can control and manipulate paper to use as weapons, shields, and other objects they can think of.

ROD OVA was extremely popular back in the day with anime fans but like so many other older anime in this thread; it just didn't really catch on with western anime casuals, normies and tourists.

*G4TV bought TechTV few years after airing ROD TV, Betterman, Silent Mobius, Soultaker and few others I forgot.
