I really do believe she hoped to be a critic for New York magazine or something equivalently prestigious. The closest she ever got was something unserious and insignificant for PBS. But for that period of time before her self cancellation (2019-2021) that she thought she was about to achieve her goal and that it was within reach. I still think her being a white woman gunning for a prestige gig like that without being a nepo baby meant it was never going to happen. Her making a comfortable six figures for just a few hours of effort per month is a pretty decent outcome for her but she will always be bitter because she thought she got close to the brass ring.
This was my thought too. She doesn't have anything interesting and original to say, so she wouldn't make it as a creator - she wants to sit around and judge other people's work on an elevated level. The grown-up, respectable version of what she was doing as Nostalgia Chick.

IMO Lindsay when she was in film school wanted to be the next be indie/documentary filmmaker only doing "Hollywood" projects that had "cultural significance". She wanted her films to be the darlings of the critics and film festivals hence her abortion student film. When that failed, she then latched onto being the Nostalgia Chick and Doug hoping that could be her steppingstone to being an important "serious" film critic because if you can't create then criticize those who can that was the whole point of Chez Apocalypse to remove herself from Channel Awesome and its silliness and be part of something more "Serious" while she reviews Disney Movies.
Lindsay dreamed of being an important figure in the snobbish circles of the Film Industry either as a filmmaker or critic and failed at both instead becoming a suburban wine mom who reviews shit on the Internet. If she was a decade older, she could have sucked Weinstein's dick and gotten herself into Miramax and had some kind of career.
I'm reading this thread and I feel like I'm experiencing cognitive dissonance. Channel awesome gets like 100k views per video, her youtube channel gets multiple millions per video, what reason would she have to be jealous of doug?

This is exactly it. Her vocabulary is collegiate critical theory, not contextual from literature. She's educated, but not well. I'm not saying she should shift from Transformers reviews to a deep dive on Beowulf, I think she should embrace that she loves the trashy pop culture and it's okay that it doesn't actually have a deeper meaning than a few hours of mindless entertainment. Lindsay's arrogance IMO stems from being self-conscious without self-awareness, but now that she's a mom in her 40's maybe she'll accept herself as successful enough in the field of pop rather than prestige. Lindsay thinks she's a one-of-a-kind internet personality, yet she still hasn't let it sink in that her time has come and gone. She's no longer a fresh faced single 20-something being fawned over by fat NEETS, but now a worn-out alcoholic mom of two who is dead behind the eyes. Lindsay is smug, cynical, addicted to shitposting, and tries to make her subject matter seem more lofty and meaningful than it actually is. She’s a pseudo-intellectual who thinks you should listen to her because she’s more than a mere YouTuber, she’s a Thought Leader. She’s passionate about bloviating on a soapbox, often only tangentially about whatever film she’s purportedly analyzing, and passing off her half-baked opinions as educational. Her attempts at side projects feel forced because they’re more about propping up her image than they are about true creative passion, and she doesn’t allow a lack of real skill to stop her.
Jill is also humble, respectful of her audience, and sticks to topics that are reasonably within her wheelhouse. She strikes a good balance between trying new things that attract new subscribers while staying consistent enough to not alienate her long-time fans.
