Anyway, I saw Heat again for the 103 time and it is still an amazing film.

Never gets fucking old. For me, it's a perfect film, from plot, characters to the magnificient action scenes. Watched it a million times, too, and i am still impressed by it on every rewatch.

Rewatched Blue Ruin this evening, it had been a while since I had seen it.

What a great little movie. It's one of those few movies that I think sets out all its goals and accomplishes them.

It's so easy to screw up a revenge story by being heavy handed, but I think this one handles everything perfectly. Bonus points for handling violence the way it does, everything is visceral but believable.

Blew me away on first watch, i really did not expected it to be this good. Saulnier has a very distinct film making style, one i really, really enjoy.

 

[Rome's rightful successor]

Robot Dreams is a good movie about friendship and loneliness.
It's not a big movie but a movie of small moments interweave together to celebrate life.
In it, there is no dialogue and the animation/ music tells the story.
There is no sexual undertones and it's truly about friendship and nothing weird.
If you feel lonely it does speak to you and I'll say it's my favorite movie of the year so far even if it released in it's native Spain last year. .

I've recently saw 2 movies that I really liked.

The Wave (2019)
Scumbag lawyer gets dragged out by his friend to a night out, takes some weird drugs and then reality starts breaking down.
He goes on a journey to find out what the fuck happened and discovers himself along the way.
The movie is funny, positive, well made, original and just entertaining.
In a world full of remakes and depressing deconstructions, this is a real breath of fresh air.

Welcome to the Punch (2013)
Cop almost captures a known criminal but gets shot in the knee.
Years later, the criminal's son is used to bring out the criminal from hiding.
The cop is angry and determined to get revenge.
However, something bigger is at hand and both of them get wrapped up in it.
A really solid thriller with stand out performances from James McAvoy and Mark Strong.

I watched this 2023 low-budget Blumhouse thriller called The Passenger. It’s very good. Sort of like a cross between the 80’s movie The Hitcher and that 90’s Kevin Costner movie A Perfect World. The actors were unknown to me but I hope to see them more. Streaming services should just give 20 guys like this 5mil to make a movie instead of giving 100mil to J-Lo.

I’m posting this to tell you to take the time out of your day to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars if you can’t be bothered to care or pretend that The Acolyte exists.

Between this cartoon, the Star Wars Battlefront/Knights of the Old Republic games and even the Lego Star Wars games, this cartoon is possibly the last time there was soul being put into a franchise that cares about its characters.

Peaky Blinders. It's like Downton Abbey but with an organized irish crime family, murder, drugs, booze, tits and constant swearing instead. It's pretty good but it's on Netflix only.

Big top burger/Peach Creek. Independent YouTube animation projects with tons of charm. BTB is about a clown alien with shapeshifting powers who runs a food truck burgers, it's really charming and has an amatuer roughness to it that's refreshing. Peach Creek is Ed Edd 'n Eddy but they're in highschool now and starting to deal with adult problems. Damn well made and a long time in development to boot, a true passion project.

Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe the last and the best of Universal’s insanely successful Flash Gordon serials. Universal's series were not necessarily the best serials, Republic had more series with bigger action and inventiveness, Universal's weren't made on A-movie budgets but the studio still spent some serious money on them, they didn't have the money MGM had but they were still a major studio and their science fiction serials were like their gothic horror movies -more visually ambitious than similar efforts by other studios. The sci-fi gadgetry looks both campy and retro-cool at the same time, Buster Crabbe is perfect as the jut-jawed man of action Flash Gordon and Charles Middleton brings a certain something to his last go-round as Emperor Ming. Though with the old serials, I find them easier to take them in watching them a few chapters at a time.

Im very fond of this movie. Im not sure if it still is but there was a long period of time where young me considered it my favorite movie ever.

It's technically a sequel to the Fugitive with Harrison ford. (An ok movie in my opinion but I liked this better.) It's staring Tommy lee jones and his whole crew from the Fugitive hunting down a far more dangerous and trained black ops solider played by Wesily snipes. They get assistance from Robert Downey to go after him but get sucked into a conspiracy.

The twists, the turns, the drama and pacing are excellent. Not too excessive, but not at all boring. With the best soundtrack on the planet.

In a lot of ways it doenst revent the wheel, but its a movie that is put together so well and so delightfully dramatic you cant help but love it.






Also I watched Die hard for the first time ever. Definitely earns the crown of being one of the best "realistic" action hero movies. Hard to believe the role was originally going to arnold.

Bruce killed it with his everyman performance and the script was smarter then most movies now.

Around 2007 or 2008 I started this tradition where I would pick a nice series to watch and watch a few episodes before bed at night. The years kept going and I kept watching kino.
At times life went faster and I would watch less or no episodes at all. But as the years went by I kept steadily watching something. Be it with a girlfriend, with a roommate or alone, I love watching 1 or 2 episodes of some nice show every evening. Or if I felt like it, maybe spend the whole day binging. Maybe call in sick for work or for university or even for highschool. Fuck it, I wanna see what Walter White or Colonel O'Neil do next.

And I think I might have done it... I might have seen it all. All the good kino there is, I might have actually watched it all. Don't know what else to watch. I've been through this thread, got a few nice picks.
Is it possible? Have I, slowly but steadily for the past 17 years, seen all the good shows? I just can't find anything I'd like to watch. Lots of 7.9imdb star things that seem alright, watch one episode and drop instantly.

Please give me a few shows you've watched that aren't that famous but you really liked. I'm into everything. From Desperate Housewives through The X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Dark Matter(the old one, not this slop they made recently), Bates Motel, The Office, to Better Call Saul, Narcos, The Mentalist, Seinfeld, Frasier etc. As long as there is some sort of consistent story, engaging and interesting characters I will probably like it.

Most of the famous shows I've probably watched but I can't be certain. Even some not that well known, cancelled but exceptional shows like Forever, Counterpart etc.
I can't have possibly watched all the good shows, right? I'm not even looking for something that awesome anymore...just something comfy, idk.

A couple of shows I didn't see mentioned -

Person of interest - it seems high concept, but it actually follows a pretty standard procedural for the first two seasons, and then the storyline starts taking over. The writing and directing veer wildly from utter dogshit to best in class, I'd say if you aren't into it by episode 4 of the first season it isn't for you.

The Shield - absolutely top notch blend of police and crime procedural, up there with the wire imo. It's about a police department in one of LA's shitter suburbs, and some of the cops there have a unique perspective on justice.

Gotham - going in the complete opposite direction now, Gotham is shlock at it's absolute shlockiest. It is one of the goofiest shows I have ever seen, but it's also a hell of a ride, because Heller always finds a way to top whatever happened last time. It actually gave me an appreciation for Jada Pinkett Smith - she is physically incapable of not hamming up every line, and it grows on you like a fungus.

Burn Notice - 21st century Macguyver, starring Bruce Campbell no less. The main star Jeffrey Donovan is intensely off putting, which is why it never went big I think, but he's also a talented actor, don't nope out immediately when you realise nobody is going to punch him in the mouth.

Psych - two manchildren pretend to be psychic detectives and solve crimes for the police. A good blend of comedy and procedural, assuming you don't find the two main guys intensely annoying. And I mean intensely - if you just find them annoying, give it a few more eps - I hated them when I first started watching it, but I was in hospital and I had nothing else on my laptop so I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did.

Rome - another Bruno Heller work like The Mentalist and Gotham, and believe me Heller hit his peak early, because Rome is God damned flawless. Ok, that's hyperbole, but I remember being disappointed when The Mentalist came out that it wasn't even close to Rome, even though Rome got fucked over by HBO and had to wrap everything up in season 2.

Seasons two and four of Channel Zero is some of the best horror writing and effects work I've seen from a television show and frankly in a theater.

I had only watched the first season of Channel Zero and didn't think much of it (although there were some decent moments). I'll have to check out the rest of it, I didn't even know they made more than one season.

I am currently rewatching it, my point still remains that it was ahead of its time (even if it aired in the HBO Golden Age era) and people were just not ready for it. I love everything about this show, the Christian imagery, the Great Depression aesthetic, most of the acting is great and it just drips with originality. I will be mad all over again that it got cancelled once i am done watching.

Yeah, found this out when i was looking up what Nick Stahl's up to years ago, a shame because he was talented. He's fucking menacing in Larry Clarke's "Bully". Also liked him a lot as John Connor in T3, a film i will never be able to dislike.

Oh, so he really recovered? Has been what feels like centuries, i'm gonna check both of these films out soon, i'm fresh out of new things to watch, hence my rewatch of Carnivale. Stahl is good in it but pretty much everyone in the cast pales in comparison to Clancy Brown. As you said, he's acting his ass off and i really enjoy it.
