Fucking hell, this came out of nowhere for me. It was mentioned off-hand in a Feral Historian video so I decided to look it up. Absolutely fantastic.
Shares a lot of the same DNA as the Mad Max movies, taking place in a broken down Australian outback setting. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are the stars. Far, far bleaker than Mad Max, I suppose you could call this a 'modern' version of it, but not the enshitified version of modern. Kept me hooked the whole way through. Pearce shoots a midget in the head so that sold me on it instantly.
Definitely check it out if you're a fan of post/near-apocalypse stuff.

Just watched A24's Backrooms movie, I found it disappointing. Kane Parsons needed a much more auteur role in production, because clearly the movie instead completely glossed over almost everything that made Kane's youtube videos interesting in place for a extremely generic family therapy story line.

This is no joke, at least 1/5 of the entire movie about the BACKROOMS takes place in a therapist office.
And now Warner Bros. / A24 are tying to own trademark in the entire backrooms fictional concept when they only own stake in Kane Parson's work, which is itself highly derivative of others. I am very upset that a highly free and open narrative world is somehow being bought out.
Also the WHIte Girl BLAck Guy marriage was an added insult because it demonstrates they yet again only care about getting awards.

Animal Kingdom has been on my radar for a while but now it has leapt up the list.
Pattinson really got the shit end of the stick being saddled with the Twilight stigma for so long but I think in a way it helped him, he did a lot of smaller movies after that and it’s given him a chance to shine. Even in absolute dross like ‘The Drama’ he was able to do well.

This is more of a recommendation against watching. Binged (most of) the first season of Sugar, which stars Colin Farrell as a film loving private detective working a case in Hollywood. Despite movies being such a key component to the series, most of the references are just clips from older movies that thematically mirror whatever is currently happening in the show.

The overarching plot feels like something right out of Ray Donovan, only less fleshed out.

And there's a pants on head fucking retarded twist that happens in one of the final episodes of the season.

colin farrell is actually a space alien

They drop hints throughout the series, but they're about as subtle as yelling "bomb!" in a submarine, so I didn't think that'd be the "twist." It ruined the entire show for me, and I doubt I'll continue.

Great cast though. Wasted potential.

A bit late, but I watched Obsession last night. I thought it was pretty good. It's like an R.L Stine story on crack

If you can track the episodes down check out a show from when I was a teenager called Robot Wars.

I always liked this show more than Battlebots because the hosts seemed to have more personality(I mean for most of the shows run the main host is Lister from Red Dwarf), The House Robots added another layer of challenge, and then there were rounds that had nothing to do with destroying other robot so that mean that the builders couldn't just stick destructive weapons on their bots and call it a day, they had to be prepared for the rotating challenges that would come up each episode. I still have some episodes that I transferred to DVD from VHS years ago and I think there is a torrent of most of the episodes on the Pirate Bay. I rewatched season 3 recently and it still holds up, if you can get it give this show a shot.

Cassius 2 was always my favorite robot, shame it didn't win.

Watched They Will Kill You (2026) tonight. I was immediately put off by a white guy being the abusive father of two black girls, but once I powered through that first few minutes, I was rewarded with one of the funnest movies I've watched this year. It's The Raid meets a Satanic cult trying to sacrifice the black chick from Deadpool 2 whose super power was good luck. It starts out insane and only ramps it up from there. I genuinely loved it and had a great time with it.

OMG, Bob Hoskins in that final scene was genuinely amazing.

Send Help is a fantastic little movie and it really makes me hope that Sam Raimi stays away from the Capeshit factory and just goes back to make his little horror movies.

I truly didn't know WHAT THE FUCK was going to happen when watching that, one of the least formulaic movies I've seen in a long time. I question if it'll still be fun on a second watch when you know the twist but what a great blind watch it was. The intro was a little slow but once things kick off it's just great. It's essentially an Evil Dead movie without the paranormal. Rachel McAdams becomes a fucking monster at the end at it's fantastic

I second this. Dropped it after a couple of episodes, Colin Farrel's role has to be the biggest Gary Stu in modern television. Terrible show.

This is a mix of a recommendation and a condemnation: The televised series of Interview with the Vampire has somehow rolled down the mountaintop to the mired valley, which is to say it went from the best show on air to genuine dogshit within its 3.5 season runtime (now onto 4 seasons.)

Originally, the rewrite was genuinely good. Making Louis be a creole lousiana man was genuinely interesting instead of forced garbage, it made him more faceted and brought depth to what was originally the flattest character of the main trio. I liked it. I thought it was a good adaptation of the books, and much more interesting than the movie, as both were vastly interesting but kind of boring here and there. (See how Louis in the books is.. a dollar-store halloween costume as a character. While I like Claudia in the books as she was Rice's way of venting about her recently deceased daughter, she doubly falls into the pits of Rice being too caught up in wistfulness rather than character depth.) Either way, it was a fine first season, although it got terribly trite in the domestic violence episodes after Claudia runs away.
The second season was similarly mixed- some great, some bad, but mostly good. And then it started to slough off into the dogshit ravines in the last episodes and onwards into season 3.
I do not care for s3 lestat. He's annoying! They turned him from a proper flamboyant dramatic whiny bitch of a vampire and made him be a woke faggy overly-online loser who repeats literal tumblr posts I've seen written about him, but it's an aired television show! Why is Lestat de Lioncourt prancing around on stage in glitter screaming "I'm the world's first and favorite maladjusted show pony on methamphetamine!"? What are we doing!? The show writers decided to panhandle to the tumblr tags of all things and the entire show fucking imploded!
Now onto season 4, with akasha played by sheila, they made sheila somehow look nauseatingly ugly with her bulged-out eyes and unhinged jaw just shrieking and yawping on screen. Don't get me wrong, making Akasha be a "kill all men" type of feminist is interesting for her character considering she was a bloodthirsty matriarch of the old world, but come the fuck on. Making Akasha of all characters be a spiritually pink-hatted 2014 style feminist is just nauseating. God, I feel so bad for Aaliyah, the poor woman must be rolling and groaning in her grave to see what's been done.

I just saw Backrooms (2026), it was weirdly strangely good?

I like the exploration aspect to it. I thought it was going to end with it implied to be man made but it didn't exactly do that and was better for it.

I liked the direction of the movie for most of runtime, though I feel it worked better in third person shots than the POV sequences. I felt the ending was good.

My interpretation is that the backrooms are a dimension where things that fade out of existence in the real world only to exist in memories start retaking physical shape.

I also like how the film uses the audio from the Voyager probe Golden Record

I noticed that too in the end credits, I was curious first if this was something done just for the movie.
