Doesn't sound so bad, or at least not as bad as I thought it would be, I like that Johnny Cage is the Sequel bait, that BTFO all the Journos that where claiming he would be omitted from the franchise as a whole. Hopefully the fight scenes are good

How does this look cheap to you guys?
This looked pretty expensive to me so I looked up the budget and it's $101.5 million so there's real money behind this.
Most of that money is on the CGI and it just looks bland because the color scheme.

I don’t get why we need to have a live action Mortal Kombat movie, when they could have pulled a Japan and make an animated movie out of it:

Then again, this was back in the 90’s and anime was a lot different back then.

I agree. It is actually smart on their part. Considering Johnny is probably one of the most beloved Mortal Kombat characters by fans.

Contrary to what Journos wanna believe.

I got back from taking out my new significant other after a wild night out watching the film, and it was surprisingly enjoyable, great even...!

I usually don't get involved much in "intellectual property" adaptations that have been a glut since 2012, but the MK2021 film was... Good. Enjoyable, sincere popcorn fun.

The fact that it did draw me in is... Really something. Making Scorpion the bookend acts actually worked. The performances were fun, over-the-top or to the point. Not a single scene was wasted, I feel.

You see Disney, you COULD make a brand new character that is connected to an established character that they can see the world and franchise through with. At first I thought Cole was Taven (!!!) But they pulled a Desmond Miles on Cole, also cool.

And the ending theme. Don't even get me started on how good it was...

Tarkatan females since the first game been officially hot thotty asian or tanned caucasian in appearance not negroid.
Kitana and Jade are both Edenian, from the conquered realm of Edenia.

This is what a female Tarkatan looks like.

With Mileena being a clone of Kitana spliced with Tarkatan DNA.

I thought we were done with movies based on vidya, because they universally suck?

Ah, who am I kidding. All pop culture in Current Year is basically required by law to be shit.

Detective Pikachu and the Sonic movie were both actually good and successful for what they were, so I think vidya movies are probably going to be the next big trend.

I mean, superhero movies used to be viewed in the same vein as video game movies now until the 2000 X-Men movie and then capeshit ended up dominating the 2010's, for better or worse.

If we're going to compare video game movies to superhero movies, then you could say the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is sort of like the 2000 X-Men movie, it sort of "broke the curse" and got the ball rolling.

Prior to 2000, the closest thing superhero movies had to "good" were the 1989 Batman film and the 1978 Superman film, which were followed up by increasingly weaker sequels.

I suppose the first Resident Evil film and the first Tomb Raider flick with Angelina Jolie are probably the closest equivalents to Batman '89 and Superman '78 in this analogy, as crappy as they were.

The Prince of Persia movie was okay. Kinda forgettable, but I remember it being a fun adaptation.

I never saw it but IIRC, it flopped at the box office.

As terrible as Anderson's Resident Evil films were, the first two made money at the box office and the first one is sorta decent, and then the later sequels coasted on a mix of Paul W. Anderson knowing the right people in the studios and wanting to ensure his wife keeps getting work.

Hence why they'd be the rough equivalent to the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman films in this analogy.

But yeah, if Hollywood's gonna trend chase to fill the void capeshit will leave behind, it's gonna be video game movies now that Sonic and Detective Pikachu have broken the curse on video game movies like X-Men and Spider-Man did for superhero movies back in the early 2000's.

Either that or we're going to return to the pre-2010 divide of "nerd pop culture" and "normie" mainstream pop culture where they only occasionally overlap.

Personally, I'd love to see a movie adaptation of Manhunt with Eli Roth as the director.

Surprisingly, it didn't. I took a look and it grossed $336 million with a total budget of $150-200 million. It was even the highest grossing movie based on a video game until Warcraft.

Huh, I guess it was a case where it did good at the box office but the critics hated it so it was deemed a flop. For some reason, I thought it was deemed a failure.

I'm wondering if we'll finally see a Grand Theft Auto adaptation after Roger Corman dies. I know they couldn't have a GTA movie or TV show as long as Corman's alive since he made that car chase movie in the 70's with Ron Howard.

Of course, I think GTA would work better as a TV show for HBO or FX than as a movie. Granted, this would be the pre-woke HBO and FX that gave us The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield, and Sons of Anarchy.
