Why not just have Liu Kang be the lead role again or have him be co-leads with Kung Lao instead of making a new Asian character?

I understand why this movie wouldn't include Ermac since besides ripping Jax's arms off he added nothing to the plot surrounding the first tournament, so it's better for pacing to have Sub-Zero do that instead.

But Johnny Cage is one of the original kombatants so his omission stands out.

So, of course the only white man in the movie is a villain.

What a refreshing plot development.

EDIT: Plus we're not going to get anything close to the iconic "those were $500 glasses, asshole" line. Fuck this gay Earthrealm.

I’m surprised that YouTube reaction channels haven’t pointed it out, but the man depicted in the artwork when Sonya describes the tournament to Cole resembles the Great Kung Lao.

Here is an image from Kung Lao’s arcade ladder ending in Mortal Kombat 11 for comparison.

It was surprisingly better than I thought, and it seems to have better references for the game than past iterations. Still looks cheap, or is it how every modern hollywood film looks?
I thought it looked surprisingly cheap as well, I was expecting a little more, but I think it's because in modern Hollywood the only way to get an R rating is to take a big hit in the budget.

Other than that, it looked alright, not amazing, but some cool moments.

How does this look cheap to you guys?
This looked pretty expensive to me so I looked up the budget and it's $101.5 million so there's real money behind this.

I dunno, just the effects they showed in the trailer don't look like they have that money behind them, those fire effects or the ice-effect def don't look good. Hell, the Goro from the 90's movie looked better when compared to the one they showed, it could be because of the trailer itself so maybe it looks different on the big screen.

What we have here is a strange bubble where the average farmer defaults into the reaction they regularly have to everything else.

Hear me out, unlike literally every other thing aimed at "nerds, geeks, freaks, and weebs", Mortal Kombat has been trying to work on another film for legit decades now, since the complete, inexcusable fuck up that was MK: Annihilation. A lot of work has been put into this, unlike every other remake/reboot/distant sequel of things from the 90's. Another thing that works for it; until MK11, there was not one iota of a fuck given towards being PC or wokeshit. The MK IP was the equivalent of a stealth drone, bypassing everything and sticking to what brought it to the dance. Whatever brainworm Boone caught, it only got it's teeth in recently, and only got to tone down the fanservice, we still had our over the top bloodsport in it.

You can see the evidence in the propaganda: "Hurr durr where's Chun-li?" and "13 Reasons white nationalist symbol Johnny Cage isn't in the new film, and why it's a good thing!! (You won't believe No.6!!!!!)" Absolutely no one should shit themselves in a rage over freaking Johnny Cage, all that's gonna do is give the vultures something to build a narrative that isn't there.

Now are the New Guy Protagonist and BLMeleena red flags? Probably. There's definitely a chance they fumble and fuck up, but so far, there aren't any real signs of that. Don't let apprehension deprive you of a good time.

I'm not saying this is gonna be the Citizen Kane of the new 20's, fuck no, it's Mortal Kombat. It's gonna be cheesy, exploitative and essentially a $100M budget grindhouse flick. Exactly the thing the original game was aiming at.

... i hope.

tl;dr if i'm wrong I'll eat something long and hard. Like a raw carrot or something.

It looks like it will at least be an enjoyable action film much like the first one.

But I'm still disappointed no Johnny Cage. He's a character that is basically comic relief and it actually wouldn't have felt that out of place to make him the evil white misogynist who gets killed early on.

I hope that they somehow include the best Mortal Kombat song in this movie (ok, the *second* best Mortal Kombat song... everybody knows first one though, so I won't say it here...) But this is the one I was talking about...

Chinese Ninja Warrior is a banger, but they’d get shat on for being culturally insensitive as there are no Chinese “ninjas” if they included it in the new film.

So this got pushed back a week to April 23.

However apparently it's already out in Russia and Asia.

Here's the plot, from the Russian wiki page:
In the 17th century, Hanzo Hasashi lives a happy and calm life with his wife and two children in Japan. Suddenly, the Hanzo family is attacked by a group of fighters led by a warrior with special abilities - Sub-Zero. Hanzo Hasashi's wife manages to hide her youngest daughter in a hiding place. Sub-Zero infiltrates the dwelling and kills his wife and eldest son in search of Hanzo Hasashi. When Hanzo returns, he finds his eldest son and wife frozen to death and is overcome with anger and rage. In a fit of rage, Hanzo uses a metal spear for farming, killing Sub-Zero's warriors. In total, there is a fight between Hanzo and Sub-Zero, in which the latter wins, not without great difficulty. The wounded Hanzo hears the cry of his daughter, who was previously hidden by his wife, but due to the injuries received, he cannot reach her and dies, falling into the underworld.

Today, mixed martial arts fighter Cole Young competes in a $ 200 MMA fight but loses the fight by submission. In the locker room, being with his daughter, Cole meets a visitor who turns out to be Jackson Briggs. After the fight, during dinner, Cole and his family are attacked by Sub-Zero, who was sent by Shang Tsung to kill the "chosen ones." Sub-Zero's attack was watched from the car by Jax on behalf of Sonya Blade. He helps Cole and his family escape from Sub-Zero, however, he is left alone face to face in an abandoned building with Sub-Zero. Jax loses the fight with the ninja and loses both arms due to Sub-Zero's freeze.

Cole, at the direction of Jax, hiding his family, goes in search of Sonya Blade at the address that Briggs managed to give him. Cole meets with Sonya, who tells him about the mysterious Mortal Kombat tournament, and that only the “elite” take part in it - people who have a special mark in the form of a dragon. This is exactly the mark that Cole, Jax and Kano have, who was held captive in Sonya Blade's house. Suddenly, Kano, Cole and Sonya are attacked by a reptile sent by Shang Tsung to kill the chosen ones. During the fight, Kano manages to free himself from the chains and handcuffs with which Sonya chained him, and defeat the reptile, tearing out his heart.

After the fight with the reptile, Sonya invites everyone to go to the temple to Raiden. Kano is at first skeptical about this venture, but agrees for the three million dollars offered by Sonya in the form of a bluff. All three take the plane of Kano's friends towards the temple and disembark in the desert. In the desert, Kano makes a lot of aggressive jokes and even gets into a small fight with Sonya, in which he loses. Then a young guy appears in the desert, who introduces himself as Liu Kang, who has special skills - he sends fireballs, spawns with his hands and controls fire. Liu Kang brings his friends to the temple to see Raiden, who tells the visitors that they are not ready for the decisive tournament and that they need to start training immediately to find and develop their special skills.

Liu Kang and Kung Lao, an older friend of Liu Kang and a descendant of the great champion of the same name, are preparing the charges. Kano, after a small staging by Liu Kang and Kung Lao, has a new skill - directing a fiery laser from the eye. Cole, in turn, fails to learn and develop his gifted skill. Sonya discovers Jax in the temple, who was brought to the temple for treatment and further preparation for the tournament. Shang Tsung comes to the temple in the company of Sub-Zero, Kabal, Reiko, Nitara and Milina. Raiden makes it clear to Shang Tsung that he will not allow attacks on his charges before the start of the tournament on his own and defends the temple with the help of a dragon statue. Shang Tsung and the company leave with nothing. Raiden also sees that Cole is unable to reveal his abilities and purposefully sends him home to his family.

Shang Tsung arranges a meeting with his warriors, during which the Cabal states that he knows Kano well, indicating that the latter can be won over to his side. During the meeting, Prince Goro also appears, which greatly pleases the sorcerer. Cabal comes to Kano and after a short joking conversation persuades Kano to betray his companions and use a laser to destroy the dragon statue to disable the temple's defenses. Kano betrays his team, destroying the dragon statue with a laser. There is an attack by Shang Tsung and his company on the temple, during which Nitara is killed by Kung Lao's hat (cut it in half), and then Kung Lao himself is killed at the hands of Shang Tsung, who takes Kung Lao's soul for himself. In parallel, Goro attacks Cole and his family. In the process of the fight with Goro, Cole manages to reveal his abilities: he has armor, which reflects all blows and collects energy from the damage done for its carrier, and also from Cole can create elements of melee weapons from armor. Goro is killed after a fight with Cole.

Raiden, observing what is happening, moves the entire team to the space between the Earth and the Outer worlds. During the conversation, Cole suggests that Raiden move them back to fight Shang Tsung's fighters in order to catch them by surprise. Raiden agrees and moves the heroes to fight according to Cole's plan: Reiko vs. Jax, Sonya vs. Kano, Liu Kang vs. Cabal, and Cole himself went out to fight against Milina. The heroes, although not without difficulty, successfully cope with their opponents. During the battles of the heroes, Sub-Zero kidnaps Cole's wife and daughter and provokes the latter to move to an abandoned building for battle without other persons. During the fight with Sub-Zero, Cole grabs the pike of his ancestor Hanzo, which causes a ninja in a black and yellow suit to appear, calling himself the Scorpion, which, as a result, turns out to be Hanzo himself. Scorpio immediately engages in combat with Sub-Zero. The fight takes place at an equal pace. Cole then joins in and, along with his ancestor, defeats Sub-Zero. Scorpio, seeing the exhausted Sub-Zero, says that all this time he was in the underworld and learned to control the hellfire and burns Sub-Zero.

After the defeat of Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung reappears and declares that he has many more fighters, and that he will soon send armies to Earth, after which Raiden drives him away, teleporting him to the outside world. Raiden reminds the heroes that the tournament is ahead and very close, and that they need to find a few more favorites according to the list he has. At the end of the movie, Cole retires from the fight, telling his manager in the dressing room that he is going to Hollywood. As it later becomes clear from the posters in the locker room, Cole is going to visit the next chosen one - action star - Johnny Cage.

Sparknotes version because I don't expect you to read/understand all that shit:
-In the 17th century, Scorpion's family are attacked by a group of fighters led by Sub-Zero. Scorpion's wife manages to hide their daughter but her and their son get frozen to death. Scorpion finds them dead, kills the fighters in a fit of rage, then loses a fight against Sub-Zero. He hears his daughter crying but succumbs to his wounds before he can find her(we saw part of this scene in the trailer.)
-Present day, Cole loses an MMA fight then meets Jax in the locker room. I'm assuming he tells Jax to fuck off because next thing Cole and his family are eating dinner when they're attacked by Sub-Zero, who was sent by Shang Tsung to kill the chosen ones. Jax, who was watching Cole's family under Sonya's orders, helps them escape. Eventually Jax ends up in an abandoned building where he fights Sub-Zero and gets his arms frozen/shattered.
-Cole puts his family into hiding then goes to an address Jax gave him to find Sonya. She tells him about the Mortal Kombat tournament, where only people with the dragon birthmark can take part - him, Jax and Kano, who is being held captive at Sonya's place, all have this mark.
-They get attacked by a reptile sent by Shang Tsung, during the fight Kano frees himself from his handcuffs/chains and kills the reptile by ripping out its heart.
-Sonya wants to take everyone to see Raiden, Kano is skeptical but agrees after Sonya offers him $3mil(apparently she's bluffing?) They're walking through the desert, Kano makes "aggressive" jokes and Sonya kicks his ass, then Liu Kang appears and takes them to Raiden's temple. Raiden tells them they're not ready and they need to start training immediately.
-Liu Kang and Kung Lao(a descendant of the champion of the same name) start training them. Kano develops the ability to shoot a laser from his eye, but Cole fails to develop any new abilities. Sonya finds Jax, who was brought to the temple for treatment and training.
-Shang Tsung arrives at the temple, along with Sub-Zero, Kabal, Reiko, Nitara and Mileena. Raiden tells him he will not allow him to attack the fighters before the tournament and defends the temple with the help of a dragon statue. Shang Tsung and friends leave empty handed. Raiden sees that Cole can't develop his powers and tells him to fuck off back home to his family.
-Shang Tsung arranges a meeting with his gang, during which Kabal says he knows Kano well and implies he can flip on his allies. Goro arrives during the meeting, to Shang Tsung's pleasure.
-Kabal goes to Kano and convinces him to betray the others and use his eye laser to destroy the dragon statue. Shang Tsung attacks the temple, during which Nitara is killed by Kung Lao(according to another post he says "Flawless Victory" as a post-mortem one-liner) then Kung Lao is killed by Shang Tsung, who takes his soul.
-At the same time, Cole and his family are attacked by Goro. During the fight, Cole's power reveals itself. This post doesn't describe it very well but another post says that his bracelet - which he got from his daughter - expands and can cover his entire body in armor. It also gives him tonfas over his forearms. After the fight, Goro is killed.
-Raiden moves the team to the space between Earth and the Outer Worlds. Cole suggests he moves them back so they can take Shang Tsung's fighters by surprise. Raiden agrees and pairs them off in 1v1 fights: Jax/Reiko, Sonya/Kano, Liu Kang/Kabal, Cole/Mileena. The heroes experience some difficulty but surprise, surprise, they win in the end.
-Sub-Zero kidnaps Cole's family and takes them to an abandoned building with the intention to separate Cole from the other fighters. They fight and Cole grabs a pike(kunai?) belonging to his ancestor Scorpion(OF COURSE), which causes Scorpion to appear(so essentially all of Scorpion's scenes were in the trailer, NICE.)
-Sub-Zero and Scorpion start fighting, Cole eventually joins in and helps Scorpion defeat Sub-Zero. Scorpion tells him that he was in the underworld the entire time and he learned to control the hellfire, then he burns Sub-Zero(to death, I assume.)
-After Sub-Zero's death, Shang Tsung appears and declares he has many more fighters and that he will send armies to Earth. Raiden teleports him to the Outer Worlds.
-Raiden tells the others that the tournament is still approaching and they need to find a few more fighters according to his list?
-At the end of the movie, Cole retires from fighting and tells his manager he's going to Hollywood. As evident from the posters in his dressing room, he's going to find the next chosen one - Johnny Cage.

This post talks about what the characters' powers are like in the movie.

Here's Nitara:

And the sequel hook:

Here are some snippets of footage and the new/updated theme I think? I can't tell if it's official or just something that was put over the video.

Sub-Zero vs Jax

They got BossLogic to do a poster for some reason. Don't know why this guy is so hyped up when all his stuff looks so busy and amateurish but whatever
letoyls84zr61.jpg

I don't think you can best the simplicity and badassness of the original theatrical poster that just had the dragon.

Lewis Tan is cute ngl. I think he's got David Beckham syndrome though (when the voice don't match the body)

Hopefully the sequel introduces people like Kitana, Jade, Nightwolf, Sindel, etc
