Surprisingly, it didn't. I took a look and it grossed $336 million with a total budget of $150-200 million. It was even the highest grossing movie based on a video game until Warcraft.
Huh, I guess it was a case where it did good at the box office but the critics hated it so it was deemed a flop. For some reason, I thought it was deemed a failure.
In some cases a movie can turn a profit but be seen as "below expectations", an example I can think of is Batman V Superman, regardless of what you think of this film it grossed $873.6 million against a budget of $250-300 million, yet the movie failed to beat Civil War aka the other Rich hero vs boy scout in blue film, and a film featuring Batman and Superman should have easily crossed the 1 billion mark, add the fact that the movie was universally hated by audience and critics alike (lets ignore the snyder fans me included for a bit) and you can see why it was seen as a failure despite the film turning a profit.

The movie was fun, Cole, the new character, was a waste of time, some characters were jobbed too easily and there wasnt enough Scorpion. The fights and gore were great, the main good guys were great, except Cole, and tons of easter eggs if you enjoy the series. Shang Tsung ws very dissapointing. They should gone with the original, I know he is old, but he doesnt have a fighting role, and Shang Tsung is an old wizard.

Última edición:
Is Kitana is in? I found it weird since there's no word about Kitana but there's a Mileena, and she exists by being a fucked-up clone of Kitana in the first place.
No Quan-chi either? The guy tricking Scorpion?

No Kitana. Maybe they couldn't fit her in naturally, or maybe they want to save her for a sequel where she can have a bigger role?

It doesn't seem like Quan-Chi's there either, just Bi-Han.

Joe Taslim is signed on for four films so if this movie is successful we’ll likely see him as Noob Saibot in the sequels.
Hope they locked in Hiroyuki Sanada too.

i think the movie is ok. I gotta say i did expect it to be shit, but i am glad its not. Sub Zero ice effects looked great and pretty much everything with him and Scorpion/Hanzo was good. Id say that first fight between them is the best part of the film. You can see it on youtube. I dont know if i really liked any of the characters that much. There's a lot of them, so you couldnt really give them a lot of screen time. Well, Cole got the most and yea, hes just meh. I did hear people liked Kano and I did like him, but he got kinda annoying after a while. The way the characters get powers is also weird. It's like you have to unlock your chi. I think it makes sense with Liu Kang, but not with Kano or Jax. It sucks that even John Tobias, the co-creator of MK, doesnt know how the powers work. He tried to anwser this question on twitter, but i think no one really understands it. Anyway i guess its fine. I did have a problem with Liu Kang, who is pretty much just a side character. On the other hand Cole goes from losing to a MMA figter, to defeating 2 very strong characters. Kugn Lao has a great kill, but most of the fatalities were pretty shit. Also, most fights are happening during night, so u cant really see a lot. The MK theme song is also not used at all, until the end credits. This is also not a tournament film, but just Shang Tsung sending his fighters to kill the good guys before the tournament even starts. Idk how that works, cause i always thought there has to be a tournament if the Outworld wants to rule. In this movie Shang Tsung is kinda like, fuck the elder gods, lets kill them right away.
I watched the 95 film just before this and I gotta say i liked those characters much more. But there's also less of them and no Cole. Perhaps Sonya is better here, but not by much. Shang Tsung and Raiden are by far better there, while Sub Zero and Scorpion in the new film. I also think the Liu Kang vs Reptile fight is still the best from these films.
Anyhow, i think if you're a MK fan you will like this. Just dont expect something great.

So like Alice in the Resident Evil movies, the OC has to upstage the video game characters.

And he'll probably be added to Mortal Kombat 11 if it gets a third Kombat Pack.

Shao Kahn defied the Elder Gods and invaded Earthrealm in the third game, but it seems odd that they've started out with a similar plot for a new movie franchise rather than the tournament itself.

I'm hesitant to see it, because there's no Kitana. That might actually be a good thing, since no Kitana = no Kitana to fuck up. But it's not off to a good start when the first thing I think is "my main is missing, so at least they can't fuck that part up"

I'm also skeptical about this whole Cole thing. I'm fine with AUs and sort of OK with new characters (in practice, almost all of the new characters introduced to the franchise since MK9 have been shit, but in theory, new characters might be good?). However, MK has a long history of trying, and failing, to bring in newbies as the "new stars" at the expense of the old. The closest that's come to working is with Cassie - all her friends are shit, though - and Midway/NRS/WB's batting average has been Taven and Shujinko tier, or worse. MK is not Tekken or King of Fighters. Give us the first two, maybe three games of characters, and after that be very conservative with your roster.

With that in mind, is this film still worth watching? I take it it follows it's own timeline, and not any of the game / movie / comic ones?

I think the director said they had OC donut steel guy in there was just to have an excuse to explain things to new people not familiar with the games. And besides, Johnny Cage shows up at the end, so he’ll be in the sequel.

Gonna eat some edibles and watch this tonight. I have fond memories of playing MK as a kid but I'm not invested in it enough to take it too seriously. I'm guessing it'll be a fun flick to get baked and eat nachos to, will report back after watching.

This was a perfectly fine B movie, Cole was alright it's like they wanted to bring Takeda but decided to just make an OC and use him as the replacement
