Ilia Topuria suffered orbital fractures in both eyes in UFC White House loss, will not return in 2026

Ilia Topuria (17-1) has been released from the hospital and is on his way home to recover.

The former UFC lightweight champion suffered orbital fractures in both eyes in his technical knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in the UFC White House main event last Sunday in Washington, DC, with the right eye suffering the bulk of the damage. That’s according to a report from Marca, which also indicates “El Matador” will not return to action until some point in 2027.

UFC CEO, Dana White, predicted the injury during the UFC White House post-fight conference.

“We literally had him get out of the Octagon before the hand was even raised and sent him to the hospital,” White said. “He’s busted up. I’m not a doctor, but his eye looked like he probably has a broken orbital. I don’t know that; that’s not a fact. I’m just assuming. My plans for him are to go home and rest and recover, take his time. [It] was a rough night for him. I just want to make sure he’s healthy and good and not even thinking about him fighting again. I just want him to go home and relax and rest and heal.”

Losing to Gaethje marked the first loss of Topuria’s pro career, which “El Matador” spent primarily at 145 pounds. No word yet on whether or not the former two-division champion plans to move back down to featherweight or hang around at lightweight to get his revenge on Gaethje — assuming “The Highlight” is still around by the time Topuria is cleared to return.
What do you say to an Ilia Topuria with two black eyes?
Nothing. He's already been told twice.

Also, Paddy Pimblett backed the salt truck up for this one:

Well, given that 2026 is the year of the dark horses...

This is a weird fight for me, I'm curious to see who wins... but I'm not really excited to see the fight.

Don't get me wrong, both Islam and Garry are great fighters, very smart with great wins, and Islam might be the most talented MMA figther...

But they are also very defensive oriented and this might turn into a staring contest, because Islam never goes into the pocket without feinting level changing to scare people into thinking he is going for that single leg, and Garry is way, WAY taller than Islam, he is a reach expert and you won't get near him without getting popped by jabs.

I guess we can trust that Islam is going to be on that good russian creatine and just out-muscle Garry on the ground, since Ian is a string-bean vegan... but even if a workhorse like Shavkat had issues to out-muscle Garry... yeah...

Also, looking back the Shavkat fight, I didn't remember, but Ian was the one who had sub attempts, Shavkat had to brute his way out and force the groundn'pound, since he was out classed by Garry on the stand. And Shavkat is a monster, as far as brute strenght goes, it is either him and Usman in the WW history.

Still, I'm pulling for Islam, he might want to make it safe and secure the bodylock GSP style, and as far skill goes, he is the guy to get it done.

But I dunno... trick match for the Dagi... Garry ain't no tiny Volk to kick, or Olivera to catch on the flying chin (sigh Charles...) or washed Dustin (he was, sorry Porier fans), and having to bet if Islam can out muscle a guy who is 5 inches taller than him... a bit of a tall ask you can pardon the pun.

Regardless, don't expect a rollercoaster like Topuria V Gaethje, this fight will be very methodical and kinda boring if we are being honest....

I don’t want a timeline where this cuck herpes infested fuckwit is a champion. As much as a I’d love to see another inbred Muslim following POS get an L. I don’t think I could handle Ian using his new success to preach that being a cuck is that of a strong UFC champion.

Now that Conor McGregor is back, do we really need Temu McGregor for anything (Ian Garry)?

If Shavkat can keep Ian clinched up on the cage, Islam is putting Ian on the mat very fast because once the Dagestanis have your back against the wall/cage, they're attacking the legs/hips with sweeps, hooks, and drags. For a guy like Ian who is taller with longer legs, if he tries to block the leg attacks, then he sets himself up for the body lock drag and he's on the mat anyway, at which point, Islam is just going to wear him down until he gives up an arm or his neck.

Considering that it's Ian Garry and how the cuck always has to have some humiliating moment where he gets caught, I have him schooling Islam for five rounds before Islam gets a symbolic, Anderson Silva v. Chael Sonnen 1 submission to cap off his record break.

Well that'll make everything worse, due to an automatic rematch happening, cause the 170 division to fuck over every other fighter.

I really hope Islam ends up the underdog on one of these gambling sites because I'll actually make a bet for once.

Unlikely, I've seen some sites taking him as a 250/300+, which ain't crazy odds like the Topuria fight, but Islam has some cred for a reason, smart fighter, very disciplined on his game plan (to detriment of excitment truth to be told), really strong and a unique talent.

We joke that this is the year of the underdog, but if we are being real, Islam is the safe bet to make for a reason.

The thing about Ian Garry that makes me curious is.... when was the last time we saw Islam being being the agressor in a fight?

In all his major fights, Islam was very confortable kicking outside of the pocket, shooting his singles after a jab, waiting for counters, but he won't get to do that with Garry, who is faster and longer than him.

I guess Islam can always just pressure and walk down Garry to the fence and iniciate the wrestlefuck, but when was the last time he did that?

Aggressor - Poirier at points in their fight, Bobby Green on a weeks notice or something like that, Thiago Moises, Volk 2 on 10 days notice.

This is also a question I have - think he tends to be the aggressor/come forward if the opponent is the type to let him. All of those guys, even Poirier at points - like to back up and play outside fighter - so he gets to come forward by default. Vs Poirier when they were on the feet it was more open space or even Islam boxing backwards, but when he went for takedowns or collar tie knees he could press forward.

So for me, the question is - does Ian Garry allow himself to get backed up by default. And I think if you look at a lot of his fights, the answer is kinda yeah he does. If he makes a serious effort to hold his ground and not get backed up, then maybe this is interesting. But Gabe Green backed him up, Geoff Neal was him running around on the backfoot. Shavkat got his ass on the fence as did Prates.

Says something about him that he's winning almost all of these fights with his back there but its a thin line to watch. You look at the improvements of Prates since the loss and I think if they ever fought again I would just pick him to pick up from round 5 in a rematch and start seriously fucking him up.

I don't care anymore, Justin Gaethje is the GOAT fuck you I love this retard.
AUTISM REPRESENT!

Justin has never struck me as completely stupid. He's always been smarter than he came across, especially since his domination of Ferguson all those years back.

I think what made this Ilia fight so surprising was not because of how "stupid" Gaethje was. It was how dominant Ilia was, and the shock that came from such a technical fighter getting outclassed. Now, a lot of it had to do with Ilia's desperation, but it doesn't change how shocking everything ended up being.
