The Mexican Drug War is an ongoing asymmetric conflict between the Mexican government and various powerful drug trafficking cartels. While rooted in decades of smuggling, the conflict escalated significantly in December 2006 when President Felipe Calderón launched a militarized offensive. Cartel violence has on occasion publicly spilled over into neighboring countries.

- Death of "El Mencho": On February 22, 2026, Mexican security forces killed Nemesio "Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military operation in Jalisco.
- Sinaloa Cartel Infighting: A violent internal "civil war" has raged within the Sinaloa Cartel between the Los Chapitos (sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and their supporters) and La Mayiza (loyalists of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada) factions.
- U.S. Terrorist Designations: In early 2026, the Trump administration designated several major Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG, as foreign terrorist organizations.
- Fentanyl Crisis: Mexico remains the primary producer of fentanyl entering the U.S., a synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of annual overdose deaths.
