Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

I question that math b/c it's assuming everyone paid $40 - is there no region pricing for consoles?
Gonna be honest, I was just doing quick mental math, so I just stuck with a single price point just for simplicity. There's almost certainly wiggle room between things like regional pricing and people who shelled out for deluxe editions, but how much is totally up in the air - if you were to ask for a rough guesstimate range I'd assume something like $40M-$45M total, which is still maybe 1/5 of the games development budget assuming that they were closer to $200M than $250M. Which lets be honest, its Bungie, they were closer to $250M, and that's not even touching what Sony paid acquiring these fuckers.

We're well and truly beyond "Financial Black Hole" at this point...
 
The big difference is that Destiny had over a decade to reach that point, and for most of that time it still maintained a healthy population.
Destiny should of been the game to finance and grow Marathon, but they obviously ran it into the ground. I've said this much before, but they should of put more effort into fixing Destiny and getting back the good will of their audience before releasing another game. They probably should of killed Marathon and focused on D2. The reality is Destiny 2 is a fucking turd, it's going to stay a turd, and it's not the companies future. If anything, it's a money sink/unwanted baggage at this point.

I dont want to say this is a massive cope, but it kind of is.

Do Destiny players want a good game to call home? Yes fucking badly. Bungie had 10 years to do it and they failed. If they made a D3 im sure millions of people would play and millions would quit.

When it comes to the last patch, I don't know much about the final update, but I doubt it did anything to fix any of the complaints any one has had about that game. As an outsider looking in, it looks like arm chair activism.

If not this, then are Destiny fans really that fucking pathetic they will just show up en masse for any little snippet or crumb of new content? I just don't buy that at all.

I think most D2 people either know this shit is a waste of time and so they didn't bother and the people who did show up thought this was really twisting the knife.

And honestly, nothing against you for enjoying it, or for being frustrated that the devs are fucking around with what you enjoy to try and get that wider audience they need to survive. Lord knows I've been there myself more than once over the past decade-plus.
The bones of a good game exist in Marathon, if they had a coherent and consistent release plan I'd be down to continue playing it. I have an expectation that every season of the game should build upon itself and be better for it, but there are one or two changes of this season that stick out to me. Mistakes they already made and already fixed, but obviously think they know better than the player. S2 showed that they really have no plans of making a game I want to play.

I dont want to play an extraction shooter that has no loot on the map and the only loot avialble is Goop (gear off other players). So I can take my Goop and lose it in Cryo Archives/Ranked, rinse repeat every season.

I refuse to get on this treadmill, I refuse the lack of the most basic player agency in this product (map rotations).

I can play any other hero shooter, battle royal, or extraction shooter and have a better time.

This first major update will probably be the last major update, 1.2 million came and went. Any plans of stringing people along for a decade wont be happening.

I'm not going to support and finance research and development for what ever the fuck is going on in the studio right now though. Imagine going to a bank asking for a business loan with no actual plan. That's how I feel as a consumer, I'm not investing my time.

Modern gaming has no software developers. It's all a bunch of AWFL in senior positions , tranny artists and hordes of outsourced Pajeets gluing old pieces of code like something out of 40K esque parody.

Should have been just an extraction mode within Destiny. Destiny players would goon to having to grind strikes and raids again to recoup gear they lose extraction runs.
Counterpoint: Gambit. That's as close to PvPvE as Destiny's gotten, and it has never caught on, to the extent that barely any updates even touched the mode after the first year, and that was eight years ago. They tried again with a similar mode in the last expansion where some arenas could be invaded, but I think a lot of players just avoided those locations as much as possible.

If Bungie seriously thought that they were going to get the entire Destiny fanbase to buy Marathon, or that they would move over en masse if they killed Destiny, then they're completely retarded.

I'd say there's a body of evidence out there that indicates that they are in fact completely retarded.

So their plan was to take this mode that nobody played out of a free game and stick it into a $40 one with nothing else to do, slap an ancient IP on the front and it would sell 12 million copies?

In a way, but it's a little more complicated. I'll try to keep it brief.

Gambit is a PvPvE game mode in Destiny 2 where two teams race to summon and kill a boss first. The main PVP aspect is that at specific intervals in the match, a player can choose to invade the opposing team's arena and attempt to kill as many of their players as possible before they're either killed or their time runs out. Otherwise, the teams are entirely isolated from each other, and if nobody even chooses to invade, there can be matches with no direct PVP conflict. Even when there is, it really isn't anything like an extraction shooter at all; there's no loot risk, and both teams still get a loot reward on finish, winning just gets you a bit more.

The recent (and last, apparently) expansion added an activity called the Lawless Frontier which plays a little more like an extraction shooter. A fireteam goes into the location, completing minor objectives across the map as they work towards their ultimate goal, whether it's taking out a boss or smuggling goods. Along the way, they can find additional opportunities for loot from chests or side events. At the end, there's one last holdout before hopping on your ship and leaving. Some of these locations each day can also have invaders spawn in, but they're more of a nuisance than an actual threat unless your team is really sucking hard. All that happens is they try and kill you a couple times before their lives run out and then receive loot based on their performance, but you're given extra revive tokens so that even if they hit their limit, you're just back to where you were. So it's more of an extraction shooter-lite, where it has the general structure but none of the loot risk, as well as being able to avoid the PVP altogether if you want (some objectives require you to do PVP matches, though).

The genesis of Marathon's development, as I've heard it, is that some devs were playing an extraction shooter (I believe it was Tarkov) one day and decided that this whole extraction shooter thing can't be that hard, why don't we make one? This would have been somewhere around 2020 or so, a couple years after Gambit. They probably should have had the realization that this style of gameplay is not exceptionally popular, but I think Tarkov had been doing numbers around then too, so they probably thought that this could be Bungie's next big thing. And then things spiraled from there, the budget kept ballooning, the scope kept increasing, the whole project got revamped who knows how many times, and finally they released it more out of obligation than because it was in the best state to. And the result is...well, you already know.

It wouldn't surprise me if the same toxic positivity that led to nobody working on Concord ever raising the notion that they were making a game that nobody wanted was also at play in Bungie during Marathon's development.

I remember this now, I used to play it quite a bit when I had a squad in D2. I thought it was a fun mode, even though I instantly got dusted every time I invaded the other team.
