Do you think Tarkov is some kind of Urban exploration simulator? The only tension in that game is from the sudden and immediate loss of life and gear. It's not Alien Isolation: Russia edition.

At least with Marathon you're moving through other worldly places and as time progresses the enemies increase in difficulty.
well it kind of was at one point but the devs really spent all of their effort gutting all of the emergent gameplay and went out of their way to prevent players from getting high quality gear or valuable loot or useful quest items, or really just getting any leverage over other players in general.

one of my favorite things to do in tarkov used to be going into reserve with some nigger ambush kit and then trying to hunt players in the knight buildings, because they're dark and full of loot, and people rarely opened the key doors so you can hide in them easily. It's high risk, low reward, and was mostly just an excuse to get into a fight or leave the lobby easily. But the last time i played tarkov they had gutted the loot tables in filing cabinets and computer towers so the knight buildings were no longer places people visited, the keys were expensive as fuck because they made them limited use, and despite that literally did not have any loot in them the 10 times i opened the door, and glukhar just spawns there 90% of the time now instead of switching spawns so you'll probably just get headshot by a raider if you try and approach the knight buildings from anything but the rb-st building. It's dead content now, literally can just afk in those buildings and go MIA

the game used to be dripping with tension and excitement because you didn't know what you were going to find. Now you are confident there's not going to be anything useful behind the locked door whose key costs 800k roubles, the only thing you can be confident on is that the lobby has hackers

Marathon chads...this can't be real, right?
Add those two situations together, and unless there’s another game in development, there simply isn’t a need for around 800 staff members to work on an underperforming Marathon and a now-defunct Destiny 2—as has long been the rumor, layoffs could be inevitable.
Whenever they announce the number of layoffs I always get surprised at how many people work in a single project.

I still can't get over the idea they made a game called Marathon and its just a battle royale/extraction shooter.

The dipshits didn't realize they needed the Halo, Destiny AND extraction shooter audience to sustain Bungie. You can't just make a niche game on a AAA budget you fuck tards didn't you see what happened with BLOPS4, or MW3? All you had to do was cover your bases.

1. 8 hour campaign telling the story of Marathon using tilesets and map areas that can be repurposed for multiplayer.
2. Co-op for campaign, Firefight mode, Spec Ops missions, Zombies style defense modes.
3. A functional arena/small/medium sized multiplayer game mode which has loadouts and gear you can choose to spawn in with
4. PVE extraction/Roguelite game mode
5. The shit they came up with.

But nooooOOoooo. Let's just do one game mode for the ENTIRE GAME.

I kind of agree. They did really boil the game down to “run this map, run this kit, run to this POI, and repeat.”

Reserve was the first map I thought of reading this and I’m not surprised that was your map. Reserve is a hollow shell of what it once was.

The loot on that map was fantastic, every POI had something and the map had play space for every conceivable player. You want CQC, you want long range sniping, you want to rat, maybe you just want to do some Splinter Cell style larp at night. You could do all of it and get rewarded bigly for it.

Now people frown when they have to run it.

What many Gamers™ seem to forget is that Marathon was always just a diminutive of the games full name, which is actually:

'Marathon Is Speedrunning The shuttering of Bungie while robbing Sony of 3.6 billion dollars with nothing to show for'.

running a five stack and just sitting on top of dome and terrorizing the map for 35 minutes was such a fun thing to do and adding the underground legitimately solved the problem the map had where you couldn't contest that. but after about a year they just decided to remove all the valuable loot and raider spawns from the underground command bunker, so it's basically just a pvp arena to fight the players contesting the k2 power switch instead of being a place that was ludicrously dangerous to pass through without being on alert because raiders spawned there. they've streamlined the game for streamer niggers and removed the things everyone else did in the game

for a while there they just moved all the loot to streets, which is such a huge and poorly optimized map that people with 16gb of ram can't play it without loading in late. the game legit tries to keep itself below 32gb of ram use by aggressively using the swap file but streets is so big that it just causes textbook cache thrashing where the game freezes for seconds at a time due to race conditions. they recommend 64gb but the game won't ever use more than 32 (i have 64gb)

I was taking another year long break from Tarkov when they added streets, it looked like an absolute mess.

I really think tarkov has some of the worst gun play in the entire genre. There's not a patch gone by where I don't cringe at some kind of change they make to it, for example they recently they added some kind of shakey animation to ADS? Everything surrounding the actual trigger squeezing is fantastic. It's the opposite of Marathon where the shooting feels good and everything else feels bad.

Why they are repeating this same retarded idea is beyond me.
The whole game existence based on repeating retarded idea.
Today Bungie implemented rotating map queues, where a specific map is featured for a set period and then rotates out. I lost the ability to pick what version of Dire marsh I want to play.
They should've done exactly what they did in Destiny 2 with Distortions - highlight random map with modifier so people wanted to play there for the better loot or challenge.

Extraction shooters are the best FPS i've ever played when it comes to player expression because of how customizable your approach can be. Your gear, weapons, route planning, risk tolerance, and objectives all shaped by the player and in turn shape how you play the game.

I think anyone who cant recognize that is probably a person who gets stomped in a public lobby.

Additionally, the rogue like elements keep the game fresh. Replay ability goes through the fucking roof on these games. Nothing comes close to these in terms of emergent gameplay.

There is a reason every developer wants their own extraction style game. Hell, even FROM made an attempt with their elden ring extraction shooter.

I think this could work, people in this game are so loot driven when the loot honestly doesn't fucking matter. People will do the dumbest shit just for a chance at another shiny. Game is filled with a bunch of Bossman Jacks.

I want to preface this with the fact I can’t find any sources beyond the Xeet AND that we all know PC is the lions share of Marathon’s player base, but if it’s at all true then that’s likely damning for Bungie.

Again, I’m not 100% trusting a single Xeet, but considering Bungie seems to be making stupid desperation moves, methinks Sony is pissed at how badly they’ve been burned here.

during the m4 laser era it actually had phenomenally good gunplay which is why i played the game so fucking much, it was extremely satisfying to mow down scavs with shitty guns because you felt like a god with a PPSH. death-by-a-thousand-cuts and now it's got some of the worst gunplay i've ever experienced in a first person shooter

All of the changes made to the game didn't just make the game worse they were specifically presented as solutions to problems they obviously don't do anything to solve, so the only real conclusion is that they purposefully made the game worse to reduce server costs.

It’s like they’re doing everything possible to not convert players over from Destiny 2.
They made an extraction shooter, which is already niche, then shit up the things that extraction shooter players like which pushed them even further away. They’re not going to get more casual players coming in because it’s just not the kind of game you can play casually, you have to be ‘on’ all the time and that’s just not what some people like myself want after a day at work.
One of the great things that D2 had going for it was that it catered to a wide audience. If you were a filthy casual (like me) would could just pop in and play an hour or so after work, jump around a map, do a few events and shoot some aliens in the face. If you wanted to get sweaty there was PvP and the raids. It had (lots) of issues but there was something there for everyone.
Marathon just doesn’t have that going for it, which would be fine if it was a smaller company, but it’s Bungie, they needed another massive game.
This whole thing has just been a baffling business decision to me.
not to mention that Destiny 2 also has it's own extraction-ish mode with renegades, a regular destiny player that's used to the class thing of that game would not budge towards marathon's shit as they have tried to fish these players with the free periods, gunplay and shieet matters a bit yes but there is more to it that marathon doesn't cover and even then, what's the point if they will just ape D2 as the people that play D2 can just go back to it and keep their progress instead of starting from zero? on a game where all of the progress you made can be wiped because you didn't double check for campers.

the execs at bungie literally sold themselves as live service niggerlicious masters because of destiny 2, what's with your gay list? modern bungie would never do anything other than live service slop and that's before you remember that the halo IP is under jeetsoft.
Just remake or remaster the original Marathon games.... I think they'd sell pretty well. It's not like the source code is gone.
i don't think they could do that all things considered and even then with the current remake culture line of thinking they would make shit worse.

It's Grummz the Retard, so definite helping of the salt shaker and then some.

Still funny if true news though. Bungie's internal morale had to be in the fucking dumpster.
