I think you're both right. I think long term, he's banking on his dad financially, like he'd done nearly his entire (professional) life.

However, I don't think Gay Jay's massive ego will let his dad just go quietly. I (admittedly bad at prediction) predict that before dad goes, there will be some massive clout farming.
