Dear Lord, deliver us from $80 rice by smiting these almighty dickheads, amen.

Food price inflation has been so awful the last 2-3 years and stupid shit like this isn't helping.

Sucks. It is on the bucket list for me to visit there, but now? When I have the money everything goes to hell. God does love his little jokes
The internet is a hysteria machine. There are many prefectures in Japan that are incredibly beautiful and have very, very little tourism. Don't let alarmists put you off.

I've been seeing lots of oldheads in social media comments saying that metal theft was common under Showa too. But in all fairness the current culprits are probably vietnamese.

As for the fires? Japan has an incredibly laissez-faire approach to fire. Insane amounts of fires turn into total loss infernos. Their fire alarm/detection systems are primitive and very few buildings have active suppression. Throw in aging electrical and their propensity to cook with gas cylinders and it's no surprise.

Most of Japan's tourism is from China, yeah. But as much as japs hate "tourists" (chinks) their economy relies on chinese dollars.

Apparently Lolita fashion is kept afloat entirely by chinks, and the chinese also spend loads of money on anime and anime garbage merch

But chinese do tend to vandalize and graffiti places, especially with anti japanese slogans. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that it's some chink arsonists at work....but when buildings burn down on the regular it's less convincing of an argument

Japan being the #1 cultural exporter helps their tourism a lot somehow the west is incapable to compete with east asia in this field (I blame wokeshit).
Liberal Democracy is suicide ideology.

I once saw someone say that you're better not speaking Japanese if you go to Japan since you'll probably speak it badly and it just makes you seem like an idiot to the locals, true or false?

I stand by learning polite key phrases. Everyone will appreciate the effort to use proper greetings, please, thank you, excuse me, etc.
Straying outside of that without an actual basis in the language is where it probably gets tedious for locals.

Cultural awareness is much more important, in my opinion. I don't care if it's 110 degrees and 80% humidity you can't wear booty shorts and a crop top to see the Great Buddha. You take your shoes off to try on clothes. You keep your voice down on the train. You don't harass random people for pictures, and especially not people who are working (leave that maid cafe girl in Akihabara alone if you're not planning to actually go ffs she's not out on the street for funsies).

There's a weird divide in content creators for Japan where half of them will tell you that Japan has so many rules and you're going to break them and everyone will hate you, and people who are way more realistic and know that if you just act with a bit of social awareness no one is going to give a fuck if you eat while walking down the street or accidentally stand on the walking side of the escalator.

TL;DR locals won't assume you're an idiot for trying to speak to them politely. They might assume you're rude if you don't at least make an effort to act appropriately.

Yet More Reasons Reiwa Sucks:

* growing literacy crisis
* food price inflation
* shrines burning down
* too many tourists
* new metal theft
I really wonder why there aren't people monitoring rural/remote areas with important/critical infrastructure more often. Then, I quickly remember how incompetent governments can be and how monitoring these things would be "above the cost of business". Well, your shit's getting sabotaged so???

Or the Government is letting those things happen intentionally, so those shrines can be "replaced" with mosques and 2SLGBTQIA++ centers, with the end goal of Japan becoming the New Haiti.

And is the trend of people killing their "useless" elderly parents/spouses becoming more common in Japan? Here's a few recent incidents or similar ones of such:

Man arrested on suspicion of killing 88-year-old father

MITO, Ibaraki
Police in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, have arrested a 54-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of killing his 88-year-old father with whom he lived.

The arrest warrant alleges that between approximately 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Takeo Sakata strangled his father, Torao at their home, NTV reported.

It is believed that Sakata committed the crime after Torao returned home from a day care service. Sakata called police at around 8:10 p.m. Friday and said "I strangled my father. He's not breathing.”

Police said Sakata has so far given no motive.

68-year-old man arrested for allegedly killing wife

HYOGO
Police in Tatsuno, Hyogo Prefecture, have arrested a 68-year-old man on suspicion of killing his wife who was in her 60s.

According to police, Shigeki Obayashi called 110 at 10:15 a.m. on Friday and said, “I killed my wife. I strangled her 4-5 days ago,” Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police went to the house and found Obayashi’s wife lying face down in the hallway on the first floor. Police said there were no visible external injuries on the woman and that an autopsy will be held to determine the cause of death.

Police said Obayashi has admitted to the allegation but has so far given no motive.

According to neighbors, Obayashi and his wife participated in a local cleanup activity on the morning of June 7 and that was the last time the victim was seen alive.

88-year-old man arrested on suspicion of killing 85-year-old wife

NAGNO
An 88-year-old man has been arrested in Tenryu village, Nagano Prefecture, on suspicion of killing his 85-year-old wife.

According to police, Kazuzo Morita is accused of killing his wife, Kazuyo, at their home on Saturday afternoon by beating her with a baseball bat and stabbing her with a knife, Nagano Broadcasting Corp reported.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Morita called 110 and said he had killed his wife. Police said Kazuyo was declared dead at the scene. Police said she had been struck multiple times on the head and body with the bat.

Morita was injured and taken to the hospital, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after 7 p.m.

Police said he has admitted killing his wife but has so far given no motive.

Also, what is with these people easily admitting to their crimes? Is it because they're trying to get lenient treatment because Japanese prisons are hell? Or is it because of innate guilt of Japanese that they easily admit those things. Compare that to the DINDU culture of Blacks in the US, even when the act is blatantly obvious and is caught on camera for the World to see.

Hopefully it does not happen. Are churches burned by fanatics in Europe getting replaced with mosques or "woke" temples LGBTQ centers?

there is a project underway to protect sites from fires:

Nine Japanese Shrines and Temples Lost to Fire in First Five Months of 2026: Context and Ongoing Protection Efforts

It would be really interesting to find out if any of these burned places were finished with the comprehensive fire protection initiative. Or what level of protection they had at all.
