I remember him constantly tweeting about his constant troubles with the father in law. I think he even mentioned the father in law not allowing him to name his child, though I still refer to the kid as Peter Cage with my friends to make it easier. I assume father in law was definitely a big part in making sure that divorce happened despite Chinese customs, which was for the best tbh.
Considering how his mother had to essentially bribe the family to get them to accept James, it's safe to say that it was expected that he was a sped. Given how they managed to produce a son, they were willing to cut him some slack, but unfortunately he kept getting more and more useless, until they have no choice but to divorce. The mother probably had the means to raise the child, but not both a child and a manchild.
