It's not just Halo, they have destroyed every IP that was labeled as "dudebro" by the gamejournos.
Now they have countless IPs and a console for no audience.
Basically, yes. I get the feeling that these people didn't see the fact that they got jobs to do Halo as a benefit or a gig. It's almost like a burden for them. Like they hate it. They hate what Halo was. They hate Master Chief.
They can't just do what good mercenary game devs do, like what NetEase Games did with Marvel Rivals. The Chinese devs at NetEase asked themselves "how can we best pilfer the wallets of Marvel fans?" and they realized that by making the Marvel characters sexy and strong, the Marvel fans' money would flow. And flow it did, when Marvel fans fell for gooner bait like the Marvel Rivals' versions of Sue Storm and Emma Frost, or the masculine male heroes like Wolverine and Reed Richards.
If that was the mentality of 343 Games, you'd have Halo games made by people who love Halo, who keep it the way it was, or they make changes that the fans demand. Kind of like how the devs working on Jedi Academy listened to the fans who played Jedi Outcast and added double-bladed lightsabers and Force power customization for the main campaign. You'd have devs who at least know what Halo fans want, and they give the Halo fans what they ask for. No pandering to CoD, no story retcons that fuck with the story of the first three games, no lecturing the main hero about how he's just a PR stunt in fancy armor (this in an era where Spartan 2s and 3s have also died for the UNSC in droves).
Maybe you'd get a campaign about Sergeant Johnson or other Spartan teams that take place during the meat of the Human-Covenant War. Maybe you get to play as Atriox as he tears the Covenant a new asshole to breathe out of. Maybe you get to play as a rising Thel Vadamee as he works his way from local noble to commander of a fleet. Maybe you get to play the campaigns of past Arbiters as they tamed the Hunters and stopped the Grunt Rebellion. Maybe you get to play as a Brute chieftain tasked by the Prophets to go full Order 66 and kill the Sangheili Councilors at the eve of the Covenant Civil War. The possibilities were endless.
Instead, they remake the first Halo campaign again. As if they haven't done this already back in 2011. And in the much-anticipated bonus levels, they add in a badass marine you're supposed to care about, who puts Chief down as if he's a scrub in fancy armor, who's good for nothing but PR. Nothing says "I love working in this franchise" more than some person's self-insert trashing the main hero of the entire franchise while being made to look badass.
Shadows of the Empire introduced Dash Rendar, who showed respect to Han Solo. The Dark Forces games introduced Kyle Katarn, who showed deference to Mon Mothma and Luke Skywalker. You can make OCs in an established franchise that don't act like shit and don't put down the main hero.
But oh, I can already hear the other side talking, "ODSTs are supposed to hate Spartans!" Since when? ODSTs in Halos 2 and 3 act just like other marines and are grateful for Chief's support. We had an entire game about ODSTs and not once did anyone say anything about Spartans. Not even when their commanding officer showed up wearing a Recon Spartan helmet.
The one ODST who hated Spartans in the books was Major Antonio Silvia, and he hated Chief because the latter killed some of his men in a practice sparring match by accident. So at least he has a decent reason for shitting on Spartans, because he loved his men, and he hated the Spartans because one of them killed his guys. It wasn't simple prejudice, but him wanting justice for the men Chief accidentally killed while sparring.
Even in the Halo Legends anime episode, "Babysitter", where a bunch of ODSTs work with a Spartan, they showed no overt signs of hating the woman. One of them was a bit miffed with her, but he kept it to himself, while the others kept their yap shut. They were professional soldiers, and they kept their attitudes about the Spartan, be it positive or negative, under control, because they had a mission to accomplish. Later, after the mission was over, and the Spartan was killed in action, when someone insulted the Spartan for getting ambushed like a noob, the ODSTs get mad at the guy for demeaning a fellow warrior who died for the cause.
What reason does Williams have for shitting on John? Did he kill some of her men, too? Did a Spartan steal her kill once and steal the glory? Did a Spartan kill one of her friends? It just feels like it came from nowhere because we got to play as ODSTs and see how they were like, and none of them bitched at Chief the way Williams did. This is why Williams feels so out of place. Especially since she just got out of enemy captivity; no veteran would let their grudges control them when they're in hostile territory. It would've made more sense if she said something like "usually I'm not a big fan of you Spartans, but you're human, and I'm more than happy to have your help in a place like this." Then she sees Chief kick ass, and she says "fuck, I thought it was all propaganda, you guys really are as good as they say!"
That would've worked better, be more realistic, while also showing that the ODSTs have some friction with the Spartans, but they're professional soldiers who won't start bitching about their comrades in the middle of a mission. Because that is fucking unprofessional.
How this woman made lieutenant in one of the most elite outfits in the UNSC boggles my mind, especially if she has the kind of attitude that leads her to lash out at a comrade who's come to help her. My guess is, if we're being realistic here, she probably slept with someone to get that post. Or she had a friend who pulled some favors for her to get a higher rank. That'd be a good explanation as to how she got captured. She was promoted past her ability, and she got her people captured as a result.
But to be real, she's just your modern writer's idea of a badass bitch soldier, and they wanted to knock Chief down a peg for not being one of the plebs. Hence why she bitches that regular Marines used to be the heart and soul of the UNSC before the Spartans showed up. Just the way she talks betrays the intent of the people who wrote her dialogue. It's basically Garth Ennis-style whining about superheroes overshadowing regular soldiers, coming from the mouth of an annoying girlboss, parading as a professional soldier, except without the professionalism of one. Either one would be annoying enough on its own, combining the two is like making a nuclear bomb of annoyance.
