They outright admitted that loot boxes or Halo 5's customization system wasn't the way to go. I agree, here's hoping the extra time will make Halo Infinite a good game.

At least Halo fans still have MCC.

Well after reading through the update, I'm cautiously optimistic. Between the graphical updates, returning to a more classic artstyle (and away from the Power Rangers aesthetic from 4/5), a confirmation of no lootboxes, the large amount of customization options, and the implication that the campaign isn't about to undergo a rocky eleventh-hour overhaul, it sounds like they're taking the feedback to heart and working to improve what we saw back in July. I'm surprised Microsoft gave them a whole additional year of dev time, but considering how Halo is pretty much their only major exclusive franchise at this point, I think they understand the need to make sure it's done right.

Really like all the different armors they showed off. Aside from the ones that are clearly brought back from other games (like the Reach Grenadier armor), the others look like they'd fit right in with the older games. No goofy weird GEN2 armors. Granted, they did say that they want to bring everything into Infinite at some point, but whether they mean the Bungie Halos only or they're including 4/5 with that as well remains to be seen. I know I wouldn't mind if they left those in the past. I'm still not 100% down with the coatings system, but I'm not entirely against it either (I already mentioned how I'm used to it in Destiny). I guess it all boils down to how many choices are on offer. The game definitely needs to launch with as many options as possible to assuage concerns.

Not a lot about gameplay yet, which is kinda surprising for a game that was initially supposed to release last month. Still, there's a whole year of updates to go, so I'm fine with waiting. Besides, I've still got a bunch of MCC stuff left to do; finished my Halo 2 Legendary speed run achievement last night (fuck Gravemind, seriously), and I'm on to Halo 3 now.

Read through it, here's my thoughts.

- Still glad Staten is working on it. I trust him more than any other 343 employee.
- Fall is later than I was expecting, based on some comments floating around I was expecting by the end of Spring. But if it gives them more time to iron things out, go for it.
- No lootboxes, but honestly Infinite was never gonna have em anyway. Most companies seem scared shitless to put them in anything these days after the Battlefront 2 debacle, other than sleazy sports games of course.
- OG rocket launcher - good, thank god they're ditching the generic Halo 5 rocket tube. Now they just need to bring back the classic shotgun and pistol.
- The updated graphics look good, a big improvement over what we saw before. Hope they're actually real and not just bullshots put together for this article. But...
- They keep saying the reason the gameplay demo looked so bad is basically because it was incomplete and they hadn't implemented everything yet. If that's the case, why show it off at all in that (quite frankly embarrassing) state? And further, this game was originally releasing this year. So something isn't adding up to me with this excuse.
- I'm a fan of the armor designs, I like them a lot. Far better than the clusterfuck nonsense armor of Halo 4/5. And it sounds like there will be even more customizable parts than Reach, which is obviously great. But...
- The coating system still sucks balls. Seems like they aren't backing down from it either which is probably the biggest negative about this article. Have it be present on top of the traditional customization if you must, but replacing it wholesale is fucking stupid.

Overall I'm feeling more positive about it than before, but still pretty skeptical. If they'd shown it off originally with these graphics though reception would've been far, faaar better.

I will say:

What the fuck is this? Am I a dipshit and just don't recognize this armor? I can't say it's Halo 4/5 level bad, in fact it's pretty much on par with the goofier Reach sets, but it looks like a fucking Mass Effect armor.

Looks like something new, kind of a cross between Mark V(B) and ODST helmets. I'd expect a variety of new armor sets to go with the old (I know they showed Mark VII armor in previews before), and it's certainly not the worst I've seen. Scrolling through the Halo 4 armors in MCC when it came out on PC, I really struggled to find pieces that actually looked decent. I'm considering changing everything to FOTUS and just accepting how silly 4's armor looks. Maybe change my color scheme to pink and purple while I'm at it.

Most of the armors they showed were pretty good, especially the Grenadier set and the one posted earlier, it's really just that one that stood out to me as looking particularly meh. What I wonder is how they're going to justify these suits lore wise. Because they look absolutely nothing like the top of the line suits that were hinted at in Halo 5 media. It was a good decision to completely revert back to Bungie armor designs but they're going to have to think up a decent enough reason for why the UNSC completely redesigned everything if they're going to keep pumping out novels and shit.

EDIT: Have to say, not really digging the sniper rifle design. It's pretty much identical to the Halo 5 version. The Halo 5 sniper was actually one of the more bearable 343 redesigns, but I really would have preferred a new model.

I'd say it's the UNSC going back to older armor designs as a way to reduce costs after the Guardians kneecapped them.

It's hard to have access to resources used to make state of the art armor when whole systems are cut off from each other.

Whatever justifies getting rid of the 343 nerf armor marines is okay with me at this point.

You're telling me, I fucking hate the way marines look in 4. They look like a bunch of Mass Effect and Army of Two rejects.

I can sort of get behind the idea of different subspecies and weapon models, but the marines were just an abomination.

It's actually one of the only decent new helmets from Halo 5, Anubis. It was particularly close to Halo 3 Scout but just a touch more alien. I say thanks for not throwing out the baby with the bathwater on this one.

I'd say I'm happy with the "big" update, as long as they actually start releasing these kinds of things more often. Of course they're not backing down or giving any more information on coatings, which everyone is still pissed about. I guess we'll have to cross our fingers and wait for them to actually show how it works, but I better have my blue primary and grey secondary damnit.

I'll feel a lot better when they start showing the game in motion, so we can get an idea of what to actually expect.

I like the new aesthetic, they have build upon what was made during the Bungie era. It's a natural evolution. Same goes with the buildings, the few screenshots from the multiplayer show that it looks like a place where actual people work instead of cheap prefab buildings from Halo 4/5.
I hope that they also change the designs of the weapons and the armors of the Banished. I don't know if they looked like that in Halo Wars 2 but none of those designs in the demo felt like "Halo".

I've read though the update and I have a few thoughts.

It's good that 343 has listened to the fans, even if nothing comes from it. We at least know that there are people at the studio who are aware of what's going on and aren't just burying their heads in the sand over obvious issues. I am however pretty sceptical, I don't know if they can turn this around before it comes time to launch and I know 343 is happy with launching with a game being a mess and using updates as an easy fix.

The "new" aesthetic is a lot better than the stuff their art department usually shits out, so that's good. I'm not completely sold on the environments yet, but I do like the new armor. It looks clean and sleek and most importantly restrained. The customization they are promising has me excited.

I still feel like Infinite is too bloated, but I'm still optimistic about the multiplayer.

Hopefully the sound design is improved. The graphics didn't actually stand out to me as terrible (by no means decent of course) but the sound design was fucking atrocious.

The shotgun sounded like somebody spitting into a megaphone, and the assault rifle sounded like a legitimate BB gun.

They should take notes from Doom Eternal and put some bass boosted blast into their shotty.

Since they're sticking to this, just do what Mortal Kombat 11 does, offer a large series of individual fixed color variants for each coating. At least push the illusion of choice to have some options.

Since it's gonna be free to play, maybe they should include the coatings with the purchase of Halo Infinite, but free players have to pay.

Slight update but one of the 343 guys said all those shots in the blog are completely in-game. I know 343 isn't exactly the most trustworthy developer out there though so take it with a grain of salt.

If true, though, it definitely looks like a big improvement over Halo 5's shitty plastic ugliness.
