General Wrestling Discussion

My dad told me that my great grandfather got into wrestling because of Gorgeous George. A guy who was MEANT for soap operas. (He was kind of a proto nature boy)
The industry came full circle when there was a reality TV show about trying out to be wrestler. Be a character who's trying to be some other character

in a way yeah but the fanbase is larger to a point where appealing to literally every kind of person in one show is impossible, people will always give WWE shit for having the same guys on top for so long but I can’t fault them for going with people that consistently draw as main eventers, and wrestlers have a longer shelf life than they did in the 80s or 90s especially now when some injuries that were previously career ending can be come back from now so I feel the argument that WWE relies on too many older talent to be getting weaker in that regard, not to mention they have a lot of guys who are in their 20s and 30s now on the roster who are probably gonna be catapulted to main eventers status like Bron right now and Fatu when he comes back from injury, Breakker is already chasing Punk and will probably be WHC by Mania if he doesn’t win it on Jan 5th, and Fatu was literally hinting at challenging Cody prior to him getting injured and guys who are less certain like Trick and Hendry who will probably be main eventers status talent or at least upper midcard, people who say WWE is going to run out of wrestlers are wrong in my opinion

According to Bloomberg, "Warner Bros. Begins Exclusive Deal Talks With Netflix"

tl;dr version:
- Netflix has beaten out Paramount and Comcast to buy Warner Bros. Discovery
- Netflix is offering $30 per share, totaling $75 billion for all of Warner's assets
- Combined base of 450 million subscribers
- Regulators and some members of Congress have antitrust concerns, so this could take a while to sort out or not even be approved at all
- Warner "will complete the planned spinoff of cable channels including CNN, TBS and TNT." This directly affects AEW but it doesn't mention how those channels are affected by this spinoff or by the sale.

Why it's being posted here? Netflix would almost certainly be in control of AEW's TV rights deal while already being in bed with WWE.

Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. has entered exclusive negotiations to sell its film and TV studios and HBO Max streaming service to Netflix Inc., according to people familiar with the discussions.

Netflix is offering a $5 billion breakup fee if regulators don’t approve the deal, said the people, who asked to not be identified because the discussions are private. The two companies could announce a deal as soon as in the coming days, assuming talks don’t fall apart, the people said. The move suggests Netflix has pulled ahead of Paramount Skydance Corp. and Comcast Corp., who were also competing for the asset.

Prior to the closing of the sale, Warner Bros. — valued at more than $60 billion overall — will complete the planned spinoff of cable channels including CNN, TBS and TNT.

A deal, if consummated, would bring seismic change to the entertainment industry, joining the world’s dominant paid streaming service with one of Hollywood’s oldest and most revered studios.

The acquisition marks a dramatic strategic shift for Netflix, which has never done a deal of this scope. The streaming pioneer grew to become Hollywood’s most valuable company, without the benefit of a content library or studio, by licensing programs from others and then expanding into original content. Representatives for Warner and Netflix didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

With the purchase, Netflix becomes owner of the HBO network, along with its library of hit shows like The Sopranos and The White Lotus. Warner Bros. assets also include its sprawling studios in Burbank, California, along with a vast film and TV archive that includes Harry Potter and Friends.

It would represent a setback for Paramount Skydance Chief Executive Officer David Ellison, who kicked off the bidding for Warner Bros. with multiple unsolicited bids.

Warner Bros. formally put itself up for sale in October after receiving interest from several parties. Comcast also made offers.

The bidding got contentious, with Paramount accusing Warner Bros. of operating an unfair process that favored Netflix. A Dec. 3 letter from litigation counsel representing Paramount called the sale process “tainted” and suggested Warner Bros. had titled the auction in Netflix’s favor.

Paramount argued in a Dec. 1 letter to Warner Bros. that its bid was more likely to pass muster with regulators around the world.

The traditional TV business is in the midst of a major contraction as viewers shift to streaming, the world that Netflix dominates. In the most recent quarter, Warner Bros. cable TV networks division reported a 23% decline in revenue, as customers canceled their subscriptions and advertisers moved elsewhere.

Founded almost three decades ago as a DVD rental company sending discs to customers by mail, Netflix finished 2024 with $39 billion in revenue. Its market value is roughly $437 billion. Warner Bros., founded in the 1920s, had more than $39 billion in sales.

Warner Bros.’ iconic content would give Netflix powerful programming to sustain its lead over challengers like Walt Disney Co. and Paramount. The deal will certainly face antitrust scrutiny in the US and Europe, and has already raised some red flags.

California Republican Darrell Issa wrote a note to US regulators objecting to any potential Netflix deal, saying it could result in harm to consumers. Netflix has argued that one of its biggest competitors, however, is Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube. Utah Senator Mike Lee, also a Republican, echoed Issa’s concerns this week.

Netflix’s interest in Warner Bros. also sent shivers through Hollywood. The company has largely refused to release films in theaters, occasionally giving its original movies limited runs in cinemas.

As I grew up watching WWWF/WWF wrestling starting in 1979, I think having the same guys on top and the upper mid card is sort of baked into the culture there. It's how Vince Sr. did it, and it's how Vince Jr. did it.

The rumors have always been that Netflix doesn’t give a fuck about the TV channels so actually the only thing they would impact with AEW would be HBO Max. The worry would then shift to how long until WBD tries to also sell off the TV channels. Netflix just wants the movie studio and the streaming to further dominate that space they don’t give a slight fuck what happens with archaic tv channels.

Also paramount already planted the seeds of some messy shit the moment they realized they were losing by publicly accusing Netflix and WBD of unfair trade practices. So we ain’t done yet. This thing is about to get annoying and drawn out by many people and with how America is these days it will probably come down to who bribes and sucks up the best to the FTC.

With Netflix, I wouldn’t say that AEW is fucked, but it’s certainly a step one to AEW being fucked because WBD could still want to sell the channels and whatever MAX money is gone, and even if they don’t sell the channels, WBD will now unquestionably have way less money and be willing to spend way less because now they’re not also trying to buy stuff for this streaming platform so AEW at best could see a huge drop in rights fees and at worst could just get canned if WBD sell the channels in a separate package to Saudis/skydance or whoever.

Its one of those I dont see a great outcome for AEW here.

I wouldn't be too surprised if WWE had some sort of deal of exclusivity in their contract with Netflix.

Best outcome is the Netflix use the threat of AEW to lower WWE's price, but it seems they are relatively happy with them at the min so may not happen. However, this can likely go the other way, get AEW to massively undersell themselves to stay on Netflix.

But if it goes the other way, it could be a nail in the coffin of AEW. Tony signed way too may people and he will lose a shitton of good will pulling a WWE house clearing of the people he cant afford now.

Its not a good thing for the industry either as at least with some competition WWE has to put in some effort.

PWInsider: Netflix is not purchasing the linear channels owned by WBD. Those channels will be spun off into a new, separate publicly traded company known as Discovery Global.

Among those linear channels are TBS and TNT, which carry AEW programming. After acquisition of HBO Max, where the rights to AEW in terms of streaming lands remains to be seen.

But one would assume it would remain unchanged through AEW's current contractual agreements with WBD at the time they came to terms.
---------

I could see Amazon possibly wanting to pick up the streaming if HBO Max deal isn’t renewed.

Coming next year to Pluto TV...
I'm just saying, TNA going to a real channel at the same time AEW is in danger of falling to obscure channels both wasn't on my bingo card, is really funny, and if anything is further proof of TNA being the DSP of Pro Wrestling.

Fucker's would find a way to do shows after the sun goes out.

That clears up the main question I had about the Bloomberg article regarding the "planned spinoff" of those cable channels. If Netflix really isn't interested in TV at all that would make sense. My other question would be if Netflix is buying shows on those channels themselves to add as content on their own platform but simply leaving the channels to have to rebuild with whatever Netflix doesn't want.

Cena doing 220 dates would've been ridiculous. Let's do some math.

52 weeks in a year, and raw and smackdown are on every week. So that makes 104. Add Ples and SNME and you get around 120 at most.

So wtf is he on about? Is he talking about house shows too? WWE doesn't do them much anymore aside from foreign tours. He appeared once on NXT, did he want to be there every week?

Don't be a mark. 220 dates was never gonna happen.

"EXTERMINATE THIS COCKROACH"

One of my favorite moments. Scott Steiner was the best and really is one of the most underrated wrestlers of all time. He had two GOAT careers. One when he was younger and a freak of nature with a ridiculous moveset and then when he was older and couldn't do as much he transitioned to Big Poppa Pump and one of the most entertaining promos you will ever see. Prime Scott Steiner was far more impressive than prime Lesnar.

This motherfucker backflip fallaway slams SID VICIOUS
