I think they abandoned that because it basically echoed the over arching plot of Xena, Warior Princess. A show about Greek warrior with a bloody past who tries to atone for the killing they did, then gives birth to a girl who bestows on her mom the power to kill gods from various Pantheons in order to pave the way for Jesus and Christianity.

If they went in that direction, Kratos would be mocked as Xena with a beard.

GOW 2 featured a big fight against a Kraken to emulate Clash of the Titans, Perseus is played by Harry Hamlin just to hammer the point home, 3 has a fight with Kevin Sorbo as Hercules, and the game definitely alludes to the rise of Christianity with the “Three Travelers Heading to an Unknown Destiny” mural in 2. Even if you do want to make a connection to Xena's endings, I honestly think that Kratos becoming one of the Magi (probably accompanied by counterparts from Egyptian and Nordic mythology) would have been a perfectly fine ending for the series.

The current required political pandering is to make your female characters look like trannies, because trannies can't pass as women so they need to convince the younger generation that women just look like that. It helps that this plays into Female Reproductive Competitive Strategy, wherein women will salt the earth and sabotage their rivals rather than try and out compete them; they have de-facto control over gamedev in the west (via publishers, HR, journo-activists, and adult daycare roles) so this attitude has bled into the work. Also helps that it's also a major part of their ideologies -- Maoism (everything must be retooled for the revolution or destroyed), Feminism (men suck wreck their shit), etc etc.

It's based on their Media Representation Theory, which is discredited woo and has been for a long long time, but they really want it to be true cause it means they get to brainwash children via media. See also: "Violent Video Games Cause Violent Kids."

They're trying different tactics to see what works. This is an old one, remember when Jason Schrier called the Sorcerer class in Dragon's Crown a "lolicon fantasy?" (Well, that was years ago.)

Basically, making the majority of women in Western games looks like non-passing transexuals won't work if there are alternatives in Korean, Chinese or Japanese games.
