One of his dumbest arguments for his film was when he said, "You want to see Mad Max in the Mad Max film?" Yeah, people want to see the protagonist of the film.
There is the cope that came out when Fury Road did, and people complained about Max not getting enough focus, that MM as a franchise is not really about him and he is just a vehicle through which to experience the problems of other people.

And yes, that is true to an extent. The problem is, when you take away the audience vehicle for experiencing the plights of others, you effectively kneecap a big element of why that whole formula works. Max is a pulp hero. He doesn't say much. He is pretty tough. And he is used as a vehicle to explore the world he inhabits. If you take away the audience surrogate protagonist then you exclude the audience.

And with Max as the protagonist, you're at least allowed to kind of draw your own conclusions about things or he is there to run counter to certain narratives. Fury Road opens with Max beating Furiosa in a fight, which helps to humble her.

The truth is Furiosa isn't a compelling protagonist. She just isn't. She works as part two of a duo at most and she isn't as malleable as Max is as a protagonist.
