Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

I managed to make a friend give the game another shot. I streamed the Ifrit, Titan and Garuda fights on extreme difficulty for him to watch and it got him hyped.

I also tried to kill Twintania for 4 hours with several different groups but something always went wrong in the last phase. Healers and DPS dying to twisters, me getting 1 shot by the Dreadknights, tanks losing aggro to the boss for some reason...

Yesterday we went into the Gold Saucer together for the first time. It was great. We played TT, we got confused by Mahjong, we did a jumping puzzle and entered the lottery. I just hope he can finally find his own way to have fun with the game or set some goals to work towards.
I keep forgetting about the Gold Saucer. I’d probably do nothing else if the lads at squeenix added poker.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching Asmon stream XIV, it's that the idea that XIV is a hard game to come up with content for is incorrect. It's just that nobody is quite as ruthlessly efficient at extracting content from games as the WoW crowd.

Annie Fuschia got thousands of viewers just doing ARR gathering logs and cheevo hunting. Cohh just hangs out and fishes. Rich does whatever the fuck he does (I can't stand him).

The problem with the big XIV content creators prior to this influx is simple - with the exception of Zepla, they're all raidniggers. And nobody actually wants to watch raidniggers.

EDIT: As another example, look at how big Animal Crossing was on Twitch for a few months. If you're affable enough, you can get hundreds of hours of streamable content out of boring 'lifestyle' games. And XIV has unfathomable amounts of lifestyle content.
I disagree. Some of them aren't raidniggers at all, or most of their streams have nothing to do with raidniggering.

Tate wasn't a raidnigger, he was a sex pest.
Spofie isn't a raidnigger, she's a "positive streamer".
Fluffstuff isn't a raidnigger, he's also a sex pest.
Ethys isn't a raidnigger, he's obsessed with game lore.
Work To Game isn't a raidnigger, he's just really fucking boring.

The problem, I think, is that XIV attracts the sort of people that aren't very social, and then these people try to stream. They stick to FFXIV and nothing else. They want to be successful FFXIV people, not successful people.

Yeah. Someone could do all that but I still see trying to take off in FFXIV content creation is really rough start. The best time for them would be when an expansion comes out or big thing happens like ultimate.
If you want to be "successful" at content creation these days, you need to constantly put out content. I don't think you can make FFXIV viable long-term.

Ethys will have some major melties if Pyromancer decides to channel his lore autism into FFXIV now that he's dropped WoW.
Pyromancer has a fucking notebook he's taking notes in while playing, and has ordered both Encyclopiedia Eorzea books. I can't wait to see what he comes up with, his WoW lore videos are amazing if only because he thinks up better lore theories than the WoW writers do. He's been riding the "LIGHT ISN'T INHERENTLY GOOD, THEY'RE GOING TO FUCK US UP" train for a while in WoW, I cannot WAIT to see his reaction when he gets to Shadowbringers. It's going to blow his fucking mind.

He also just unloaded on WoW and their community at the beginning of his stream. Fueled by another content creator MrGM trying to be coy and throw shade at the FFXIV cash shop and trying to allude it's just as bad as the WoW cash shop, he had a troll try to bait him at the beginning. Timestamped for his rant on Blizzard, the community, and their writing right at the start.

You can definitely get more content out of it than the average XIV content creator. Anyone trying to build their persona based on one game these days is in for a bad time though.

There are plenty of people who have made youtube careers out of talking about only one WoW. If the series has enough lore it's easy to talk about it for years.
Final Fantasy 14 might not be enough alone, but if you're a final fantasy fan you might drag it out for at least a decade

Also I found something cursed

This is why people are nervous about the FF14 community

God fucking damn, now THAT'S a meltdown. :story:

Pretty refreshing after seeing all the lip service "outrage" literally every other WoWfugee streamer's given.

That is a rant.

I'll say this though: for both WoW and FFXIV, the community is the best and worst part of the game. I believe that multiple groups in the FFXIV community actively push people away from the game.

Those mods are something else.

There are already final fantasy channels that are successful to some degree like Final Fantasy Union. But part of the reason WoW lore channels in particular are successful, is because WoW lore is a total mess and really hard to follow. Nobbel can make 2-3 hour long videos on one WoW character and all the tidbits surrounding that character. FFXIV doesn't have too much of that, the story is straight forward and often details are 100% delivered to the player directly.

This is a massive component of it. It's the same reason why Star Wars lore channels are so big - the actual lore is spread out over so many different forms of media with so many different competing creative visions that you need autistic lore people to reconcile it all. Especially when you take into account how much retconning and errata those settings have.

The only thing that XIV has which comes close are the short stories on the site and maybe some parts of Encyclopaedia Eorzea. And the writing/worldbuilding staff for XIV is much smaller and more cohesive so there's very little stepping on toes narratively-speaking.

So finish up Stormblood and buy Shadowbringers already. Every dungeon can be played solo with an NPC party now. It's called Trusts and it works somewhat similarly to Command missions except that you don't control the NPCs in the other roles – they automatically do what they're supposed to do. Pretty good way to do a first time run at your own pace and learn specific dungeon boss mechanics since the NPCs always adjust around them.
Oh, I'm well aware. The problem is that's what a smart person would do. It's so much easier to just be a whiny bitch.

In all seriousness, though, I did try to force myself to play again a few weeks back, running a few dungeons to shake off the cobwebs and remember how to play. ...All it did was remind me how much I fucking hate it.

I'm sure I'll eventually find something that'll catch my interest and convince me to suffer through the rest of Stormblood. Either that or I'll stop wasting money and let the sub die.

I mean, if you hate it, you hate it, and the game isn't for you.

Best not be forcing interest.

I get where AmarettoPie's coming from. I dropped Stormblood about maybe two or so major patches before Shadowbringers launched and wasn't convinced to go back until nearly a year after Shadowbringers had already been out, so getting over that final content hurdle's worth of Stormblood wasn't very enjoyable. But eventually hitting the point where I could experience Shadowbringers in full had won me over completely.

So I will say, at least put in enough effort to finish the Stormblood content just so you can finally leave it in the fucking dirt where it belongs. If Shadowbringers doesn't do it for you, then maybe, yeah it is time to unsub and quit.

The first few hours or so of Stormblood are intolerable. You're meandering around with a bunch of petulant mhiggers in discount Thanalan while getting very little XP and then Zenos shows for an unwinnable boss fight that wastes your time and also makes everything you accomplished so far irrelevant. And then after some brief excitement while traveling to Othard, you have to suffer pre-flight Ruby Sea.

Stormblood's zones just aren't very well designed and it makes the slow burn story feel even slower.

My biggest issue with Stormblood, and this my be unpopular I don't know, but Zenos is not a compelling villain. He is just a mindless killing machine, he has no motivations beyond having another fight with our character. Also out of all the characters that have died, why did Fandaniel (another weak as fuck villain with horrible motivation) have to choose that shit stain Asahi to steal the body of.

Zenos is fun enough, but you're right, there's not the depth there to make him the main villain. He's fun at the end of SB but his stuff earlier in the story is just tedious, like everything else in SB. Vauthry is similar - not deep enough to serve as the main antagonist, but perfect in his place as the secondary antagonist, who can also serve as a foil to the Exarch. Zenos should have been the secondary antagonist as well, with probably Varis serving as the main antagonist. I'm still not entirely sure what they were thinking killing him off like that other than somebody higher up being a giant Zenos fanboy. Then again, if anyone can makes Zenos compelling it's Ishikawa, seeing as Emet (similar to but to a lesser degree than Fandaniel) was wacky crazy man in the SB patches when he was introduced and became one of the best villains in the series in ShB.

Oh yeah, no, Zenos is a garbage tier villain, especially when you compare him to Emet or even Elidibus. He's so uncompelling the writer that took over with ShB had to create a second villain to allow the plot to naturally move forward.
Also out of all the characters that have died, why did Fandaniel (another weak as fuck villain with horrible motivation) have to choose that shit stain Asahi to steal the body of.
That reaction is why Asahi was chosen. It gives you a reason to always dislike Fandaniel. Plus the catharsis of watching that shitheel's corpse getting flopped around like a cartoon villain is nice.

Got yeah covered.

Shen is the kind of fame hungry cunt who leached onto people like Zylbrad and Ray(Brownman) in a desperate attempt to get any of their followers, once people like Asmon get their footing in FF14 she'll move over to another game where she can be queen bee of all 5 people and then desperately try and get more people over to it just to praise her.

Edit: Also she looks like a fat xenos.

Honestly I'm okay with Zenos being a villain at this stage of the game. We had our morally grey villains in ShB. Now, we can go back to an unapologetically evil one that we can beat the ass out of without any hint of mercy. Of course I fully expect curveballs along the way but I think the writing team on FFXIV seems quite set in keeping him irredeemable.
