Is FFXIV any good? I used to play the first iteration of this game for a short while many years ago and it was okay. And before that I mained a Monk/Samurai in FFXI. I really liked FFXI, how does this one compare?

Is it worth it at this point to get into the game?

That really depends on your own opinion, mate. I'd say do some research, watch some videos and see if it's really up your ally. You can also just try the free trial to get a feel for it. If it's not your thing, you can just easily uninstall without problems.

No reason not to give the free trial a spin at this point, honestly. You can play up to the first expansion with it.

In general does the community welcome new players and is there going to be stuff for me to do and same-level people to play with?

Duty Finder automatically syncs people down to the recommended level for earlier dungeons and there is a constant flow of newer players to the game, so, yes.

The community is its own nasty can of worms that I would highly recommend never getting too invested in, and we've talked about why at length previously ITT. Take it with a generous dose of salt anytime anyone's overly nice and helpful to you as a new player, and don't mind it too much if you get a fucking cunt baselessly giving you shit as well.

I'd say in general it is welcoming, at least at the beginner lvls, if you speak about in-game interaction only. Mechanics are built around helping people out, and you will always get somebody who is the same lvl doing the staff you need to do as well, just as @Gravemind says.
Having all the classes on one character is also helping.

Datacenters and servers have been previously discussed, and here people play on Aether, Primal, Crystal - and one of European datacenters as well, as far as I remember. According to discussions and impressions, Primal is chill, Crystal is rp-rich, and Aether is somewhere in between.

More likely than not I will get to level 30, retreat to my mog house and grow crystal flowers for profit forever. Or whatever this game's equivalent of that is.

It's a mmorpg. It's a place online for losers to pour all their time into and pretend to be someone they're not. In addition, you have 3rd party made up leaderboard website for raiding, so it also appeals to autists who believe in meritocracies and that bigger number = better.

It's anime too, which troons love.
