Seems like an abusive parent trying to assuage their guilt, or worm their way out of being asked about such an awful thing they subjected their child to.

Being called ungrateful, or being implied to be so, by one's parents, which is an alternative interpretation of Joe denying he bullied his son over his nose, can easily fall into legitimate emotional abuse. You could argue, though, that Michael exaggerated certain details, or made it up, or dreamt it, but seemed too honest, to a childish degree, and, in the interview I saw, his pain seemed genuine.
