So I was wrong. It's a pretty enjoyable movie. Emma Stone is good and reminded me a lot of Eva Green in Dark Shadows. The idea that they're trying to redeem Cruella isn't quite true - I don't want to give spoilers but at the end she's pretty much confirmed "bad", though admittedly she hasn't yet skinned any dogs (just joked about it). I really liked the period aesthetic which they obviously went to a lot of trouble over right down to old-fashioned mopeds and small, portable black and white TVs (remember those?
Pepperidge Farms People over 40 do). I have always found Emma Thompson unlikeable so she works well as the villain for me. It starts off as what you might think of as some rebellious girl trope who is punished for being independent and different, but it moves beyond that pretty quickly, imo. Also, Cruella's scheming is actually pretty clever, especially her final masterplan. Credit where it's due - the script has proper, old-fashioned twists and turns done well.
I don't think I've ever seen the Disney film, nor read the books. So perhaps that's factored in. I get that she's an irredeemable villain but here's the thing - this whole thread has been lamenting that it's trying to make her not that. And whilst it gives her good aspects and positions her in a kind of hero role through circumstances, I really don't think it does. The comparison to Joker
is a good one. You get to see her awful origins, she's placed in a situation where you sympathise with her and by the end she has embraced her role. It's just that one film has more CGI dogs.
Emma Stone looks great in a succession of awesome outfits. The film is kind of Absolutely Fabulous meets Agatha Christie. I really enjoyed the fashion aspects of it. Especially the garbage truck stunt. She is really engaging, really bold and you like her without actually wanting to know her. A lot of what has been mocked in this thread, like Arthur writing the song at the end or "Cruella" being a nickname from her mum, really isn't a big deal in the film and honestly, works fine.
Also, thanks the gods, she's not some "LOL, so random and quirky" Harley Quinn type character who grow to hate more and more. She is actually rational and smart and not just a darling of the plot gods who gets a free pass on everything because she's "a strong, independent wahmen". Nor does she get a moral pass on everything just because she's the "hero" like aforementioned Harley Quinn.
Anyway, one lone voice saying they enjoyed the movie and defying the prevailing fashions. Much like Cruella.
