You see, I get that. Give a talented storyteller a blank check. I can understand that. What I don't get is why give the guy who failed to understand "Superman VS the Elite" was criticizing that kind of "heroes". He took Superman and turned him into the naïve idiot the Elite thought he was. My question is this: Why did no one think this would happen? Give him the heroes that fit his sensibilities. Not Superman.
They didn't care.

Zazlav's entire purpose in buying Warner was to gloss it up enough to sell the company and nothing else. James Gunn was a good means to sell a universe to fans and casuals given his previous work at Marvel. No one high up cared about the long term as they weren't going to be there. They just let Gunn do whatever as his name recognition was enough to rise DC in the short run, probably the only mandate was Superman given its Superman and his name will fix it.

Obviously, Gunn shit the bed, but it doesn't matter. Paramount can now eat the shit of this disaster since they were the ones dumb enough to fall for the grift that Warner was bigger than ever.

The last time the SHAZAM family had a show was in the 70’s. Meanwhile they have had to survive over the years as guest stars in other shows
Young Justice hard carried Shazam into the mainstream during season 1.

I'm not sure at what point being a comic author became synonymous with being a commie dickhole, but it definitely seems to have happened. Now it seems you can only have a good militarily-aligned character if their entire existence is centered around stomping Nazis/corrupt police officers/rednecks. Hal Jordan suffers a lot from this one, too. It's going to eventually become the case that you can't have a character even be friendly with the police, which is what we're seeing happen in Batman right now. Does Barry Allen still do police work, or has that been phased out by now?
Yeah to that point, I remember a complaint of the PS4 Spiderman game was that it had Spiderman acting too much like a cop. Which doesn’t make sense because how would any of these criminals get arrested if superheroes didn’t work with the police? Oh right, I made the mistake of using logic in a situation where there is none.

I get making WBs look appealing. What I don't get is how they expected Gunn to not shit the bed immediately.

Yeah, he is the Amber Heard of film makers, and how does his films just barely breaking even make WB look like a good studio?
Superman has been gassed up as a major success. It isn't about his films doing well, but being able to bullshit that the studio is reaching new highs. Gunn gave them the means to bullshit as many are still unaware of how well Superman actually did amongst all the hype, marking it a success and great foundation. Luckily, Gunn has only released a year's worth of content which can be sold as profitable so far, allowing Zazlav to sell this year.

He was a hype man. He was brought in, sold as the savior given his Marvel background, and now everyone involved with hiring him can take a fat paycheck and fuck off before the real damages are seen and done. No cared about his films, or even the performance, they just needed to make DC look like it was going to go big for just the right period of time to sell everything off in the perpetual hot-potato that is WB.

Had a fun idea the other day for an elseworld's where all the British characters are American and all the American characters are British.

Batman's no guns rule makes a lot more sense if he's a limey, and the idea of cowboy John Constantine is very funny to me.
Zatanna has to be Scottish though, I will not accept anything else.

"Alfred, come in."
"Ayyy, what's goin' on dere, boss?"

You would think the people buying Warner Brothers would do some research before writing the check and discover that Superman made less money on a higher budget than Man of Steel 12 years before it and Man of Steel was seen as under proforming at the time.

Are all rich people retarded?

They write a 110 billion dollar check and can't even do a google search before signing it?!

2019. I don't think they are smart enough to understand that. I think they think if they are the only game in town they will make all the money, that is why they buy every studio out there and if they can't buy it they try to destroy it.

People get intimidated by the big names like Marvel and DC, but they do have a weakness that indies, and new competitors can exploit.

They really have done everything, and bought many great IPs and characters over the years so it seems impossible. But realistically they have never been able to focus on all of it. Every new IP they absorb just gets benched.

Say in theory they have western and high fantasy characters and settings, that they seldom use in favor of the next Batman thing.

That's how Manga has done it. Even if DC and Marvel might have similar ideas and characters, only outsiders have had the time and energy to give other ideas and characters justice.

I don't think Gunn hurt WBs' chances but he didn't help either. Those who were interested in the company were going to buy them anyway. They merely waited to see if the price would change with Gunn at the helm. It probably didn't change by much.

I think that it is only part of the reason. Yes, there is a lot of history with every character and no one knows where to start but there is another issue as well: No one wants to get invested in characters that will be ruined. You liked Tim Drake and his relationship with Stephanie? TOUGH LUCK! He is a gay twink now! You liked Wally West? We made him into a serial killer! Liked Batman? We humiliated him again and again! Liked Supersons? Where to begin with that?

No one wants to get invested in such characters.

It's either that or they introduce some nobody they constantly claim is a superstar. Like whoever's on the cover of the annual DC Pride comic, you can't seriously be telling me people know or care who they are. I've found "maybe from the past" Jon to be more interesting than "previously Superman, now Tomorrow Man" Jon (who they also constantly hyped up, the post-age up Jon comics where they set up to have him replace Clark look so funny in hindsight knowing he didn't do that at all)
Hell, Superman can't even say "the American Way!" anymore for reasons.
They stopped doing this in the comics too, not sure if they did it first and then brought it over to the film. Now it's "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow" which sounds dystopian, or you could take it another direction and say the writers of the comics and films hate America, which is probably also true. I thought the American Way was supposed to representing working for a better tomorrow anyway. Same thing with the Justice League of America, they're just the Justice League now (or maybe Justice League Unlimited?), which makes sense considering they're practically worldwide now if not galactic, but I swear comics from just 20 years ago still had the Justice League use the "of America" subtitle even when they had heroes from all over and were having adventures in space. I remember there was this little "Justice League of A?" thing they did back in the day, and it doesn't work without the "of America" part existing in the name.

I have always hated the “and a better tomorrow”thing they are trying to push. It’s too abstract and as shallow, as a beauty pageant contestant saying that her greatest wish “is “world peace”. It’s just fake. It really doesn’t meant anything.

“The American way” is far better because it’s actually specific on the feeling it conveys.

I think Marvel handled this better. Captain America is even more shamelessly patriotic. But he has said he means he stands for all the ideals America represents, and he is not endorsing some crooked politician, like the usual suspects misunderstand it to mean.

Such a stupid name! You know the guy who answers with "Personality" when he is asked what is his type of woman? That is the kind of bland this name is. Pretentiousness trying to mask itself as depth. And yes, I compared the one who came up with this name to Megumi.

They tried. And burned everything in their path to do it until they realized that there is no way to ship any comics with a gay Superman.

When the writer is an extremist Commie, we can't have American patriotism until the hammer and sickle is added to the flag.

Why did they cast Cha-Ka as supergirl? Isn't it supposed to be some super hot chick?

Had a fun idea the other day for an elseworld's where all the British characters are American and all the American characters are British.
I'm terrified what this would do to Jonah Hex. I refuse to even consider it.

"previously Superman, now Tomorrow Man" Jon
There's no "good" way to keep Jon a grown up fag, but maybe they could have done something with him taking on the mantle of another hero he respected who had passed or retired. "Tomorrow Man" is garbage and all it brings to mind is "Tomorrow Woman," who was never really much of anything to begin with. I always liked the way they backsplained Nightwing's origin as a story told to Dick about a Kryptonian vigilante that stayed a secret between him and Clark.

John doesn’t really work as a grown up Superman because, then he gets in line as being yet another lesser version of his dad.

If this was real life and we had to worry about Clark getting old and being forced to retire then I could see the point. But we are taking about comics. Nobody has to permanently age.

Save for one off stories, Superman is never going to be old for good. It’s a floating timeline. So John is never really gonna replace his dad for good. It’s as thinking Damien could ever replace Bruce, in the real world, as the Batman everyone likes.

The real primary purpose of buying those IPs, characters and concepts* it is both keep them from falling into public domain and to prevent anyone else buying them.

*Power sets, character's background, history, origin, setting and etc. With the more and more obscure comics and characters the probability of someone unknowingly recreate a character, power set, setting and etc. increases.

There is no good way to do any of the replacement characters. Batman Beyond had the decency to have Bruce be elderly and chose to develop Terry. These guys came after they tried to assassinate the beloved characters.

It is like being asked to train your replacement.

That and he is a prick.

And he would still be super strong at his old age.

Damien is someone I am having a hard time ever hearing speak. He rarely is tolerable. My opinion? He should have been forced to interact with characters like Ravager. Have him see early on what happens when you follow in the steps of the assassin parent and start seeing what Bruce and his family can do for him and work off from there. Otherwise he feels too much like a murderous brat (which he is but not in an appealing way like Killua).

Imagine being such an insecure faggot that you are jealous of Zack Synder casting picks. Even Alan Moore is less of a drama queen than James Gunn.
Ryan lived the dream.

Hoarding like dragons. If you do nothing good with it, then someone comes along with the same premise but enough differences to shut down the lawyers and you are screwed. When you have nothing but the fact that you came first and there is no more fanbase due to you not having made anything good recently then you have no one to bat for you and call the other guy a rip-off or a poser.

Does anyone here remember the original superhero's name? No? Exactly. It is "Golden Bat" by the way. You need to keep the characters in the public's mind for a good reason, not just as an IP. Hoarding is not enough. Do something!
