Its incredible that some almost 30 years later he is still terrified of driving in the highway, imagine telling anyone or your wife that you will be there to pick them up in an hour or two because you have to drive the inner streets instead of taking the 15min highway and them saying ok.

But really what does driving the inner streets mean? It means he requires frequent stops to calm down, constant stop and start, gradual increases in speed and low velocities to feel safe and in control.

I did an autistic breakdown of Phil's car accident story once and over four retellings of the story that I could find, he only mentioned the burnt face on airbags thing once. I think it was a big exaggeration and he realized it sounded a little much so he quietly removed it from the official narrative.
