Cowboy Bebop Thread - Live-Action Adaptation cancelled after one season (it was shit)

I personally think that Spike's "race" or "nationality" or what-have-you is ambiguous. Given the syndicate he was a part of, The Red Dragons, I could easily see him being Chinese. Because of the gun he uses (Jericho) and his 'fro, he could be Jewish. Because of his last name, he could be German. I could go on.

20 years ago, I distinctly remember that the Bebop fanbase on the internet widely speculated that Spike was Jewish. So yeah, I think he could be whatever.

I just think they fucked up the casting of Spike for this series because (a) he's old as fuck, and (b) he's not attractive ... And Spike is supposed to be a charming lady's man.

The cis-straight male scum are going through it over the casting of Faye. I get it; a cis-straight female scum like myself is unhappy with how unappealing Spike looks, too. lol.

Honestly live action adaptations that are this poor quality tend to cast people who are not attractive for the role of a character whose looks are important (i.e. Deathflix for making Light played by someone who looks like a pasty incel school shooter)

Watanabe has said he picked that name for Spike because it sounded cool but is Japanese.
 
Anyone who likes this is a blithering fucking retard who has no taste, so you can immediately disregard their opinions. Every single character is miscast, the design looks like they went to a dollar store when they were having a fire sale, the opening is hilariously trying to be nostalgic while failing completely and the fact they've revealed Gren over fucking Ed means they know they've massively fucked up and are trying to hide it. There are four main characters: Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed. They've revealed a minor 2 episode character as well as fucking Julia and Vicious (which are basically spoilers) before the fourth main character. Do you need any more proof that they fucked up and know they fucked up?

Good God, imagine liking a fucking Netflix anime adaption. Jesus. Also I don't know why people are still paying attention to this. It is obviously trash, it will obviously be trash and its only legitimate good is selling anime and manga and losing Netflix subs. Also lol at greenlighting a season 2 of this absolute vomit when Deathflix flopped so hard it got its sequel cancelled.
 
Fuck it, after seeing the intro I'm cautiously optimistic. It's not going to be as great as the anime but at least it could be as good as most Japanese live action adaptations of anime.
 
Its probably gonna be a mediocre version of the original with some woke stuff thrown in.
 
Somehow, it had not occurred to me that Jet's last name would make him being played by a black actor very strange. And Mustafa Shakir playing Jet was maybe the only thing I had seen about this show that I was kind of okay with. (Aside from some of the costuming... Spike his too old but his outfit looks pretty good.) Now what do I have? (:_(

Also I just read that Ed is definitely in the show, so they must have chosen a tranny black girl or something and want it to be a surprise to the bigoted fans.
 
Yknow, the worst part of these things to me is never the actual product itself but rather that from now on when I need a picture of Spike from google images ill have to sift through live action images from bait articles bumped to the top of the results. Similarly, ill now have to make the distinction that im talking about the anime and not the netflix show when I talk about it.
 
Even though I've never watched or considered watching Cowboy Bebop, I still hoped that this wouldn't happen... that was me from a year ago. Welcome to the downward spiral!
 
John Cho looks comically awful as Spike; his face just doesnt match the outfit, the hair or the attitude. If they were dead-set on casting him they should have redesigned the character completely, since they had no qualms about retooling the other characters.

Adaptations like this used to piss me off more, but its better to look on them as grotesquely expensive works of fan-fiction worthy only of derision and laughter, and take reassurance that the original still exists as the definitive: There's already an excellent Cowboy Bebop tv series.
 
It is odd that we've had plenty of takes from Cho and Faye's actress but so haven't seen anything about this Mustafa guy's thoughts on playing Jet. I've even seen more of Gren's horribly miscast actor. And interestingly enough nobody's upset about this raceswap because he at least looks the part in spite of that
 
As someone who could never get into cowboy bebop. This actually looks fun and interesting on a surface level. Time will tell if its even remotely good.
