He had sex with a 21 year old. That doesn't make him a pedophile. He transported her over state lines and she sent him a nude pic. That's sketchy but doesn't make him a pedophile.

TUG talks a lot about ambiguity in the story and connecting the dots. That's asking a lot, no one needs to dictate what I'm allowed to think. I'm okay with taking Mr. Sim at his word because none of these other people were there and there is no other evidence.

The whole situation reminds me of a story about Albert Einstein. He was a serious womanizer. When he was living in Princeton, he would receive women in his parlor wearing nothing but a bath robe, letting his junk hang out. Sometimes these women were physicists, they would have enlightening conversations despite the circumstances. Sometimes they would just get it on and he would never see them again. Did this all the time.

There are a lot of people who would like to cancel Einstein for being a 'brilliant asshole' but relativity is an ingenious way to explain the Universe. On the one hand, if constant casual sex leads to an expanded view of the world we live in, where do I sign up. On the other hand, people who try to cancel others are assholes, give me a reason to care about their smears.

Were I to make a list of all the bad things said about people I care about, the list would be long and the Dave Sim story would be near the bottom. Einstein, Mozart, James Joyce, Nietzsche, Gen. Eisenhower, Bobby Fischer, Socrates, Johnathan Swift, John Lennon, Steve Jobs, etc - they were all accused of being horrible people, doing horrible things, you just have to read between the lines to know the truth!

But the truth is usually very different from the accusations. Going after others this way is cowardly.

Dave Sim is the best comic book writer of all time, bar none. We live in his wake, his work makes Alan Moore look like a stand-up comedian doing topical jokes by comparison. Dave's an anti-feminist, he was the victim of cancel culture before we had words for it, and he's stood by his work for decades despite all the criticism. The fact he was able to see where feminism was headed puts him years ahead of where we are right now.

If he and EVS chose to write a book together, that would be amazing.

One of the worst abuses Jaka suffers comes when Lord Julius, her uncle, molests her. This is a point that gains much of its force from its subtlety. The reader only knows that Jaka was sexually abused from feverish dreams she has involving phallic insects, apparently full of semen. The author's preoccupation with sexual violence highlights the tyranny of a system in which women are subservient to men. Sim (2005a) has refrained from naming a culprit, but he has admitted that "Lord Julius would obviously be a suspect." As the only male character with any connection to Jaka‘s past, he is the only suspect. Nonetheless, the story itself suggests Julius as Jaka's abuser. In his cosmic exchange with Cerebus, Dave relates how Jaka has commissioned a painting of herself and Lord Julius, calling it, "Her first tentative step on the road to a brighter future where she will escape the prison in which she finds herself....

The artist's choice to occupy Lord Julius's hands with both a phallic and vaginal object evokes the molestation of a young girl, unable to engage in sexual intercourse. This painting reconstructs Lord Julius's violation of his niece, simultaneously providing an explanation for his avoidance of her. This reading of the painting is supported by Jaka's choice of M. Zulli as her artist. Zulli's audition painting portrayed Jaka masturbating while wearing the Palnan flag. At least unconsciously, Jaka understood that what she wanted to express to her uncle was sexual in nature.

I've never really understood the problem people had with it, something to do with temperance groups in the UK and the USA campaigning against the depiction of women.

If you are familiar with the text, the author makes his way through a variety of literary styles in each chapter. It's confusing and takes time to understand, but some of the styles are applied in a deeply satirical fashion. One chapter reads kind of like a parody of a harlequin romance, someone who was into those would probably have been offended. The only content I remember that dealt directly with sex was the last chapter, where Harold reconnects with Molly Bloom in the marital bed. Overall, it's tame compared to what we see on Twitter everyday.

One of the catalysts that lead to change was a photo of Marilyn Monroe reading the book. She was sitting on a beach, the cover was clearly in view. The book had been memory holed by the general public, the picture lead to people writing to literary critics to ask what the book was about. It's kind of funny how views changed about this text that was generally only written about in the foreign press. The people who originally complained about Ulysses had all passed on, their complaints forgotten, and a fresh audience looked at it a different way.

Cerebus is a complex piece of literature that is difficult to understand. People's reactions seem to depend on the framework they use to analyze it. The story includes numerous episodes of violence against women by the protagonist during his struggles with authority.

I don't see fit to condemn the book, given that great literature mostly consists of stories about the relationship between men and women. Saying that this particular statement is valid or invalid is a judgement call based on the time and place where you live. History is full of examples of masterpieces that were detested during their time but we later came to appreciate.

All that said, yes, there is a difference between anti-feminism and misogyny. I don't believe this is a misogynistic work for various reasons, many dealing with the ultimate fate of the protagonist. He dies alone, unmourned, and unloved, never having grown to fully appreciate those around him despite many opportunities to do so. It's an epic tragedy dealing with great existential themes that are hard to appreciate.

But nothing in the story makes Dave Sim a pedophile or a woman hater. He's a dork with unconventional ideas that are expressed in complex ways, and that's probably about as much as we could actually say about it. Maybe he was drugged up, maybe he was working through some raw emotions related to a divorce, I don't really know.

The only thing I'm sure of is someone reading it 100 years from now will look at it very differently than people do today.

I'm saying that publishing that essay anywhere, not just in the context of comics should have been expected by a reasonable person to produce something along the lines of the results it got, and the creator can be a misogynist while at the same time the work is mainly about something else. If you haven't seen it, you should watch Comic Book Confidential. Not only is it a very good documentary, it gets into the sales figures for Cerberus pre and post essay. I'd contend that it wasn't as bad back then, but it was still bad enough to cut his business by at least half

As far as I know Sim is still making comics, most people avoid him because of his behavior. He's batshit and will bring shit upon anything he works on, the guy has a reverse midas touch.
Cerberus might be a great comic but few people will ever give a shit about it. I know I don't. I wouldn't even pirate that losers work.
