The pupper destruction episode made me sad. To be fair it is a better fate than slow radiation poisoning.

Downloaded what's out for a buddy, I glanced at a few bits, from what I recall of that old BBC Horizon docu they got the look of the plant, core area, and roof scene with the biorobots very accurate.
They should do a sequel about Mayak.

They should do a sequel about the 2016 Chernobyl disaster that spawned all those anomalies. You think the dogs in this show had it bad? I had a buddy that went over there and he says the dogs are the size of ponies, with no hair or eyes.

He also informs me that vodka reduces radiation sickness and I'm wondering why they omitted that in this show.

May as well just make a S.T.A,L.K.E.R. series then.

Also its heavily implied. Vodka just makes you not be able to feel your body destroying itself. Also drunk people are calmer people when the world itself is ending around them.

Nice catch, there was a movie that I saw not too long ago about the Manhattan Project where it featured a death of a character inspired by that accident.

Not quite how that incident went down, but substantially correct.

IMHO it's not even anti-Russian, because we are also showed all the courage, the suffering and the struggles of the thousand of people who had to fix this mess,

It's not anti-Russian, but it is anti-Soviet. Which is basically an inescapable takeaway from the real-life incident - the problems that contributed to making the disaster what it was were systemic, but not racial.

Yeah I'm not sure there's a way to tell Chernobyl without there being the glaring message of "The USSR really had some serious issues".

I decided to check this show out since I like historical themed shows and I'd say I generally have enjoyed it so far and wasn't as familiar with the Chernobyl disaster outside of the basic stuff so I wanted to see what it had to offer, it feels relatively authentic with how the Soviet Union was at the time before its demise. They also did a pretty good job with showing the humanity involved in the disaster since you usually just hear big scary jargon and get shown numbers and graphs but seeing people being affected by this makes you understand it on a personal level. The makeup artists also did a very good job with showing those poor fuckers dying from intense radiation sickness along with the poor souls on the Bridge of the Dead.

Because it's a meme. Also they do mention that in ep 1 when they're watching the fire. Yeah but no, the vodka reducing radiation absorption is a myth.

Red wine has (very minor) anti-radiation sickness properties thanks to antioxidants. That's about the only alcoholic beverage that might. And still, there aren't enough antioxidants to get into your system to save it from the damage that ionizing radiation does to it. There's pretty much no treatment for radiation poisoning because there's nothing that can repair the amount of cellular damage you suffer. I mean, it breaks and crosslinks DNA at the molecular level.

A bit off topic, but the most annoying thing for me is the goddamn scientific units. If you don't know, there's like fucking a million for Radiation, some SI, some not SI. Some still not used, but half-used in SI. Some only used in particular circumstances, some archaic, some really fucking obtuse, some really fucking old but people still use them for some reason. Its just a clusterfuck.

Rad, Roentgen, Curie, Grey, Sivert, Becquerel...

FUCKING STOP. Once they realized they could get a unit named after them after 'x element decayed' or twisting it, they went apeshit. Then you have the Soviet units vs. the US units and the physicist dick measuring contest they got into with units of radiation (wish I was joking, but back in the Cold War days even scientific units were used as dick measuring) like Jesus fuck. The units are just a goddamn mess. And they had to be cute and give Curie one too, because WHY THE FUCK NOT. Just shit up the units even more, its like they aren't fucked up enough to begin with.

Those units don't all cover the same measurement. Becquerel for example is the isotope's cumulative capability to irradiate, Sievert on the other hand is radiation dosage absorbed by tissue.

I agree that it's an unclear mess but it's comparable to the difference between mass and weight, still very relevant.

You can always count on Twitter for the hottest takes. This one though is so fucking asinine that everyone on Twitter has been dragging her stupid ass for it.

Bet you can't guess how that ended.

I saw the first four episodes and it's pretty good. Some of the details, like parts of paper on window frames (because everyone taped the fucking cracks for the winter) are spot on, as are little details. Westerners won't be able to appreciate it. It's a nice touch.

In terms of scenario, I think that they did well, as good as one can in 5 episodes. I also think that they err on the side of good in people. Soviet mentality didn't give a shit about lives of its citizens. As Zhukov said "women will birth more". For fucks sake, Soviets nuked their own town with 50k of soldiers just to see what warfare with tactical nukes would be like. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totskoye_nuclear_exercise) You think that anyone gave shit about sending men to shovel debree, I know that they didn't.

Also liked that KGB chief and upper echelons didn't come across as total idiots. Death of Stalin was hilarious, but most of those party bosses were less funny and more brutal.

For the rest of the people in the coutry, no one said shit, even though Western radio stations were talking. Listening to BBC, Voice of America was illegal. The whispers "Chernobyl" among adults were more and more frequent, only then the official announcement came.

I know its relevant, but still, its annoying and frustrating as to how messy it is.

I knew that one was coming. You don't have to represent probably the literal 1% of people when 99% of the people were white. Luckily Sky isn't the BBC so there was no racial quota. Also this doesn't take into account the PoC behind the scenes, doing the work, cameras, stunts, editing, music, etc. There are so many other roles in production and so much work goes behind the camera.

Why do people of color always have to be in front of the screen?

Oh, its because progtards don't possess object permanence. If they don't see it, they don't exist

Oh ffs It's a show set in the Soviet Union. Why would you expect the people there to be diverse (and yes I'm aware of the Soviet Union's Central Asian component). That would be like these people complaining that the Godfather part I wasn't diverse enough...It's the fucking mafia. They're not supposed to be diverse.

Igor Khiryak is black.
(And two out of three divers are alive. Baranov died in 2005. But, like, who cares. Red man bad.)
