UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Cody Harper, the kid who got arrested for being attacked while white, has had the charges against him dropped.

He should be monetarily compensated and it should come out of the woman cop's pocket. Getting attacked by a gang of brownoids is bad enough, but immediately getting bum-rushed and wall checked by a dainty foid cop while still reeling from the attack is unacceptable. Women shouldn't be doing anything but office work in police departments.

I said in the thread after he nailed the copper he was screwed but looks like I was wrong. A rare win for common sense.
As I said up thread there would have been zero chance of this outcome if someone hadn’t filmed it and put it on Twitter. The cops absolutely tried to cover this up and stick to their guns. It’s a prime example of what will happen once social media is controlled and non-anonymous.

No terror charges, only a weapons one which the court documents confirm are unrelated to the Muslim event, for the right wing terror cell the country has wailed about. When the police searched the homes and devices and couldn't turn anything up that's impressively pathetic.

A man was driving with a stun gun and a baton when he was arrested after an alleged right-wing threat made to an Islamic event, it has emerged.

The UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall, in Barham, near Ipswich, was shut down and evacuated on 12 July as police, including armed officers, swarmed the scene.

Darren Brown's white Ford Transit was then stopped that day by police in Basildon.

At Reading Magistrates' Court on Monday, the 42-year-old from Basildon was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months, for the weapons offences. They were not related to the alleged threat towards the Ijtima event, according to court documents.

Brown had pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing offensive weapons, namely extendable batons and a stun gun.

He was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

Brown was stopped in Priors Close in Basildon and police officers searched the van.

This led to the recovery of a stun gun and a baton, before a further search of his home saw officers discover a second extendable baton.

He was charged with the weapons offences on Saturday.

An alleged terror threat had been made against the weekend-long Ijtima celebration, prompting Counter Terrorism Policing officers to launch an investigation.

The event had attracted 15,000 people.

Brown was one of 12 people arrested on 12 and 13 July, and a 13th man was arrested on Thursday.

The incident caused some concern among members of the Islamic community, but they told the BBC they would remain defiant
But on Tuesday, four people were released on bail, and on Saturday officers confirmed a further seven men were released without charge.

Another man was freed on bail with strict conditions pending further inquiries, the Metropolitan Police said.

The force added that the investigation has involved searching homes and vehicles, and more than 35 digital devices have been seized.

I’m days behind, been offline in the real world enjoying myself for once… I have fine all manner of exciting things.
They're scared, and they think that this is going to stop it.
We are going to have to eaten them aren’t we? How tiresome…
God damn British women are fucking beat man.
Outside, now
The shake-up is the latest turnaround attempt by the debt-laden chain, which is struggling to improve its fortunes after declining sales.
My local supermarket I e been this past weekend is struggling and there is zero reason for it to. It’s got a captive market of a whole slice of a town. Good parking, accessible, all the facilities. It should be thriving. I can only surmise it’s being deliberately run down so they can sell the (huge) site for housing
The option of less elaborate venues could help cut wedding costs, which currently average more than £20,000, of which £6,000 is the price of finding a venue.
Ironically an actual church is very cheap.
If it makes you feel any the views are fucking ruined with all the bloody wind turbines everywhere.
When I’m queen, there will be a Great Toppling of the fucking things amd we will dump them in the ocean to create artificial reefs to improve the fishing industry (and then our own trawlers will be armed and able to sink Chinese factory ships on sight, cod wars II coming soon…)
Fellow Kiwis, I’m in the Hope Valley/Castleton/Mam Tor area today. It’s very steep here, falling rocks, wildfires in the distance and sheep all over the road.
There too? Woodhead pass is still on fire, apparently mainly arson, and a vehicle fire.

It is insane that Burnham is already posturing for a GE, IT'S BEEN 3 FUCKING DAYS!!! He has come in, realized he is utterly paralyzed, and can pass nothing. He has to go by the manifesto too. He already pissed off a faction in 1 day.

I am telling you this fucker is not lasting until Christmas.

British politics is like Civ hard mode because the politicians are so inept. He was blaming the 80s on Monday. I think him putting Milliband as foreign sec is such a stupid move; he only put him there because he does not want him on the backbench scheming.

The issue with Milliband is that none of the leaders seem to like him; they think he is batshit.

They're right, he's unhinged.

Some idiot just painted a hedgehog blue and yellow.
Oh that makes me so so mad. People are so cruel to little hedgehogs. I found some lads kicking on like a football when I was a kid and went utterly feral on them, carried the poor thing home in my school cardi and nursed it back to health in a box at home. Hoaching with fleas they are, but so adorable. Cruelty to animals like this should be punished harshly.
Despite having two very good pensions and owning their home outright, they'll complain that lunch cost £20 at Wagamama, even though they can easily afford it. They will drive an hour to a garden centre where they get a free coffee.
honestly it’s just being brought up frugal. My parents are like this but at the same time incredibly generous. It’s just they are set in the past, live in a bubble and dont realise how much stuff costs. Im already noticing I am similar (HOW much for a scone, fucking hell…) it’s not like I’ll not pay it, I think you just don’t go out for a while and everything doubles in price. When you’re buying clothes for kids you notice price rises and stuff. It’s just old age
The retarded British worship of foxes is hilarious. They're wild predatory animals. They'll kill and eat whatever they can.
And yet they’re kind of cute to watch playing in the back garden, especially with cubs. So are deer. Our native wildlife should be protected, to a degree. I’d rather have deer nibbling my veg than hordes of invasive species.
By which I mean exactly what I imply.

Alright Andy, I'm ready to go. Just explain stamp duty one more time, I think I get it now but just explain it again just in case.
I loathe this seasons poofy sleeve trend and am delighted she’s fallen for the meme and looks like an eastern bloc wrestler in it. Well done.
She's got the arms of a sailor. I wonder how they got so big?
as above. Those sleeves. Woof.
All my grass is FUCKING dead!
its not. Lawns bounce back, it’ll be fine. What you need to do is keep the rest of the garden alive. Set up a soaker hose system and connect to your outside tap discretely. Your shrubs and trees will die unless watered, keep watering them, but grass can take a beating. Lots of mulch on any exposed soil

All my grass is FUCKING dead!
My town is currently struggling to get water because the reservoirs are so low and the pumps failed yesterday while they were doing maintenance on something else.

People with livestock are also starting to panic because their large animals need it by the gallons. I feel like we're becoming candidates for those desaturated adverts with the sad fly-covered children in the foreground.

My local MP is effectively a place holder - never rebels, notorious for not engaging or replying to correspondence.

So I find it interesting that, a few days after Burnham was sworn in as prime minister, I have received a response to a letter I sent to my MP several months ago on a certain hot button issue. I don't think the timing is a coincidence.

What if Labour have accepted that they can't afford to keep all the promises they are currently making, because there is no money, but are working on the theory that, if they can consolidate enough goodwill, then that will carry them through a general election, albeit with a reduced majority?

Burham gets his mandate while taking advantage of a stagnation in the popularity of Reform, and pulling the rug out from under Restore who need a couple of years to build momentum. It's a gamble, but wise heads in the incumbent government must know things are going to get worse, so why not act sooner rather than later?

I think these "oh that sounds good!" policies, particularly where the costing seems dubious, might be a drip feed ahead of a snap election - and around the 3 month mark is when PM popularity tends to peak. But pretty much anything official has been Burnham dismissing calls for a General Election
We are in a parliamentary democracy and as we have seen through time, if somebody can command a majority of the MPs in the House of Commons, obviously they then have the legitimacy to lead things forward. “And I will lead forward consistent with the manifesto, which also talked about change and I want to work on the platform Keir Starmer has left to deliver that change. A massive change in our politics. That is what No 10 North is about.
Most of the suggestions otherwise have been clickbait headlines like "When will Andy Burnham call a general election? Demands for poll grow as new PM pledges 'circuit breaker'" (the article says he's ruled it out). He's "under pressure" to call one because Nigel Farage and a couple of Tory spokesmen said he should call one, which isn't really applying pressure to him at the moment.

That said it would be incredibly funny if Andy, parachuted into a seat just so he could topple Keir and assume the mantle of the King in the North, immediately called an election and lost.
