A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum. It must be incredibly frustrating. Is this behaviour something that develops over time ? Does it start small and become gradually more impactful on the person's life ? Is it related to external stressors or is there one trauma that starts it ? I assume a psychologist treats it rather than medication ?

I suffer from similar issues of over-analysing things, and dumb things that happened decades ago will enter my head randomly, and I have to kind of tell myself that it doesn't really matter, nobody really cares and I should stop worrying about it. e.g. This morning, I was worrying about a minor disagreement I had 20 years ago with a man who is now dead, who I can't remember the name of.

I gave up really giving a shit when I realised the state is a parasitic entity by its very nature. I'm not convinced at this stage, but I think it's more likely than not they just wanted to arrest some local grannies holding placards in protest who flew a video drone to post on Facebook some anti-Islam shit and then used the terrorism legislation as a beefed-up move on order.

It wouldn't be sufficient to just issue a public order notice, you need to punish them by putting them in solitary confinement for a week, steal their phones to phish for any incriminating evidence to charge them under hate speech laws, and then if nothing comes of it tar them all with the terrorism brush anyway before releasing them.

They were arrested Monday, so they really only have a few more days before they get released or charged. The four who were arrested are all far older than the ones still held under terror legislation without charge. The charges made so far are conspiracy to commit murder.

Either this was a bunch of lads with marching orders of the older members of a cell, or this is just trumped up charges to prevent a protest. I doubt it's the former because there aren't many cells in Britain where geezers are ordering around foot soldiers except in Norn Iron. Fellow Kiwis, I’m in the Hope Valley/Castleton/Mam Tor area today. It’s very steep here, falling rocks, wildfires in the distance and sheep all over the road. There are Indians everywhere. I feel like sending £100 to cave and mountain rescue simply because I know they’ll be busy dragging these idiots off the hills after falls and getting lost, being brutally assaulted by an angry sheep etc.

Lovely day, and I’m trying to be patient, but the complete lack of common sense of people is breathtaking. Please don’t try undertaking a steep hill walk in the kind of sandals you’d take a stroll in the local park in. You idiots.
