Are people remembering traumas decades after legit?

I nearly drowned in a really nasty accident when I was a child and I don't really have any special recollections or particular emotions about that event, it's just some forgotten I’m piece of history that I had to dig up hard for, just cause I saw your thread.
Weird, same. I heard from my dad that when I was like two, I ran off and was floating face down in a pond

I was quite a bit older, fell into some weird water filtering hole on some river I went fishing on, but somehow managed to hang on some metal pipe and didn't get dragged down underneath completely, so people were able to drag my dumbass out of there. It's rather interesting that when you're young these rather scary events just go away so fast. It's just as you get older and you realize how close you were to being granted oblivion, it starts making sense in a different way.

Much like hermaphrodites, I'm sure there's a handful of legitimate occurrences, but mostly it just depends on how badly you want on board the victimhood/oppression train. Something that almost probably didn't happen FAR outside the statute of limitations and reasonable memory is a relatively safe and convenient way to fool both yourself and others.

Are we talking about forgetting and then it coming back or just remembering in general?

Memories can be distorted or something, but typically they're legitimate unless there's some activism involved. I wouldn't believe anything a feminist said without proof, for example.

Shit can pop up on you out of nowhere especially if your early life was blessed with a variety of traumatic incidents and your mind decided on its own to start repressing.

That doesn't mean people are not lying, however. Some people get to be fortunate enough to have sibling(s) from the same environment that go on to become pathological or compulsive liars what a bonus!

That's not correct. Memory is very complicated and the relation of stress/trauma to it actually inhibits memory recollection. We have extensive medical and historical evidence that the higher the trauma the less likely someone is to remember something accurately.
Maybe you don't remember it accurately , but you at least remember it happened. All the people claiming they forgot they got raped or tortured or satanic ritual'ed or whatever and suddenly remembered years later are making it up. Not necessarily on purpose, but it's not real.

Sorry I worked my initial part incorrect - the "medically yes" part was more so kinda like "on paper".

Only children really suffer from the total memory loss; but they do so by default for many of the younger years.

The only circumstance I could understand as a memory not recording abuse would be circumstances wherein the person being abused doesn't understand that what they suffered is abuse until later on in life, although I'm not sure that quite counts as the same.

I think it's more the fact when you get older, you might suddenly remember something and realize just how fucked up that incident was. With the internet around, we're exposed to so many stimuli that can bring back all sorts of memories; show clips, video game OST's and so on that might have us go back down memory lane and then you remember something you probably haven't thought about for 15 or 20 years. Recently I remembered some kid throwing a brick over my garden wall trying to hit me on the head with it back when I was a little kid, then I asked my mother about it. She confirmed it was true, and that was something I hadn't thought about for a very, very long time, not until a certain stimuli made me think back to that time.

Última edición:
Maybe in some instances but memories are easily manipulated by crackpot therapists and psychologists. They start with a crack and essentially gas light the subject so much that they truly believe something that never happened to them was completely real. One of the true crime youtubers I watch did a video on it,

Also if someone only comes forward with their "trauma" years later when it's to attack someone politically then 99% chance it's all bullshit.

With op's listed scenario, I dont think "nearly" getting kidnapped is a realistic reason to repress a memory. In my case I was nearly kidnapped in my childhood and I remember it extremely well, i was like maybe 7 or 8 at the time. Shit was fucking weird, but like its not really a repressable. In my case was very brief. The guy tried grabbing, and ran as soon as he saw witnesses. Literally within the span of like 10 seconds. He was black.

Its more of like a weird "oh that happened" kinda thing. But simply saying you have trauma is heavily rewarded these days(and exploited by manipulators.)

I think the katu news segment at the time was more traumatizing. They made me sound like a retarded fat fuck(i was, likely still am), and my brothers laughed about it for literally years(i would too in retrospect.)

Society owes me.

I don't know if I personally believe in it outside of a handful of really rare extreme cases. Its kind of is contradictory to most theorized evolutionary purposes of trauma.

Memories are reconstructed and influenced by newer information. Human memory is not something you can trust.
I agree with this so much. My earliest childhood memory is from when i was 7, which is probably a bit later than usual. I just don't remember any of the stressful events or accidents that occurred prior to that, all I know is what I've been told about by my parents.
And although it doesn't bother me personally, i suppose that if i was younger and more impressionable, and a bunch of politically motivated, manipulative people would gather around me to convince me that something real bad happened to me when I was like 3 or 4, perhaps they could mess with me well enough to make me believe it and "remember" it.
Which is just another reason why i don't trust therapists or any other people that try to explain to you what "really" happened to you and what does it mean - I have a sneaking suspicion that there people who get off on on being able to manipulate someone, reframe their personality, and take over their thinking process. Not unlike demons, sucking up your soul.

It is the entire reason we came up with statutes of limitation for various crimes. Shit or get off the pot.
No, statutes of limitation exist because the facts of the case can't be established well after a significant amount of time passed. "Repressed memories" is very recent bullshit.

(Note that most (all) prominent beliebwamen don't say they've been repressing memories, they say it used to be pointless/dangerous to talk.)

the higher the trauma the less likely someone is to remember something accurately.
ACCURATELY. Like, a woman who got raped won't necessarily recall what her attacker was wearing, especially when cops are putting pressure on her to make her doubt herself. "Then he unzipped his jeans..." "Jeans? Or was it cargo pants?" "uhhh..." But she's not going to forget she was raped.

"Repressed memories" is yet another psychologist scam. Psychologists love to invent and proliferate clickbait bullshit so people would think it's a real science, to later use as weapons against them. Suppose you're in family court suing for custody and your ex is a coked-up ho, then a psychologist struts in and says, "blah blah attachment theory blah blah bonding blah blah holistic care" and bam, you can't see your kid at all AND owe a hundred thousand dollars in "therapy" to your shitty ex.

I feel like I should have highlighted the part about complete loss of memory only really existing in children.

I think what most people mistake is repressed emotion with repressed memory.

Scientifically repressed memory does exist but nowhere near the rates people claim - it's scientifically almost in the margin for error.

It's a shame so many therapists out there are fucking idiots. They bullshitted through their easy degree and the second they get into practice, they only loosely apply actual science while instead ingesting pop culture science nonsense.

My stance in this thread is mainstream modern academic psychology's, it's such a shame the psychoanalysts are still around pushing this kind of horse shit. It's also a failure of academic psychologists and their refusal to disavow this kind of pseudoscience, since academics are spineless twerps and don't want to say anything if it'll rock the boat inside their department.

100% true, therapy is gay, just drink whiskey / have a beer to chill out.
