Disaster Apple employees criticize work-from-home policy in open letter - Employees say two day WFH policy would lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce

A group of Apple employees have written an open letter to the company's executive team complaining about its new policy that only allows for two days of working from home, iMore has reported. They said that Apple's reasons for implementing the policy don't stand up, and that the policy is wasteful, inflexible and will lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce.

"You have characterized the decision for the Hybrid Working Pilot as being about combining the "need to commune in-person" and the value of flexible work," the letter states. "But in reality, it does not recognize flexible work and is only driven by fear. Fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy, fear of losing control."

We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely? How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?

In March, Apple announced that corporate employees would be returning to the office, and need to be there two days a week at minimum by May 2nd. Starting May 23rd, it'll shift to a hybrid model with mandatory office days on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. CEO Tim Cook called in-person collaboration benefits "irreplaceable" and in an email, the executive team talked about the importance of "the serendipity that comes from bumping into colleagues" during in-person work.

However, the letter counters those arguments saying that in-person collaboration is not even needed monthly in some cases. It also disputed the "serendipity" statement, saying that Apple's siloed office structure makes it difficult to bump into colleagues, adding that remote tools like Slack are better for collaboration. Furthermore, Apple's open-plan offices limit the concentration "required for creativity and... deep thought," they said.

It noted that a daily commute "is a huge waste of time as well as both mental and physical resources." At the same time, it said that the policy favors people who can afford to live near the office and don't have to perform care-work. "In short, it will lead to privileges deciding who can work for Apple, not who’d be the best fit."

Perhaps the most compelling argument was that Apple was being hypocritical in the way it markets its own products. "We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely?" the letter states. "How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?"

The letter is another sign of growing employee discontent at Apple, which often presents itself as progressive and inclusive in its ads. Employees recently started organizing a push for "real change" at the company, citing "a pattern of isolation, degradation and gaslighting," and even created an #AppleToo movement. The company is also facing a probe by the US National Labor Relations Board, which is looking into complaints over hostile working conditions.

I mean I do get it for people who have niche jobs and don't want to spend 3 or 4 hours commuting because our roadway infrastructure is completely fucked and buying a house in the city is next to impossible these days (note that both these issues are at least in part caused from the same problem - mass immigration and overpopulation, which the people complaining about this blindly support). But god damn address the actual issues instead of pushing this ID politics bullshit. They say how are people going to take them seriously in terms of their products being great for remote work when they are pushing a return to office. How is anyone going to take your case seriously when you just spout woke bullshit like that? Lmao #AppleToo movement get the fuck outta here

Plus, they're allowing 2 days a week working from home. Sounds like a decent compromise to me. Better than zero. Plus working from home all the time during the pandemic definitely had it's shitty aspects. The hybrid option sounds pretty good to me.
If using woke language and “concerns” is your best avenue to getting what you want then do it. Something something Sun Tzu.

I was certain this article was a complaint about not being in the office enough, but I got it backwards. These layabouts want WFH to be the default policy so they can smoke a bowl at 8:30 AM and watch Netflix until 3. Just drop the hammer already and shitcan anyone who doesn't want to come back into the office.

I mean I get that but it's also mega gay and I not what I think is best long term for anyone.

Like if I'm out and gotta take a shit and just wanna get that turd outta me I could pajeet in the street but that stank will linger and no one likes steppin in shit.

Why use cars when the horse and buggy works just fine? Even if the car has demonstrably been proven to work?

Why use phones when telegraphs already exist?

No, no, best to stick to the old ways.
Working from home doesn’t work for everyone and not everyone who wants to work from home is responsible enough to handle it.

All that said I’m not sure why Apple is being such a stick in the mud about it aside from the bean counters looking at their empty campuses and saying “and we’re spending HOW MUCH?!?”

No one knows Apple's employees better than Apple and someone in the organization took a look at everyone and decided they can't be trusted to work from home.

I work from home and am in a leadership role and a good 40% of my job is having to repeat myself over and over and over again because the people who write letters like this don't take their job seriously enough to pay attention.

If you lack the self discipline enough to work with somebody face to face and look them in the eye, you sure a shit lack self discipline in private.

I'm about to fly out to a dozen or so offices and retrain, again, groups who continue to put in sloppy work.

Why not fire them? Because 9/10 I'd replace them with someone just as bad.

Quoting myself because I'm dealing with this right now:

Meeting #1: Tell sales I need a form filled out with all dimensions before I can architect a solution. Sales gives me an email with random info, some relevant, some not but not the form.

Meeting #2: I ask sales to set up a call with the end customer where I explain what I need and why. Customer gives me some information, but basic dimensioning document is still absent.

Sales is pissed because they want the architected solution _today_, so guess what?

Meeting #3: I am going to go over the exact same thing that happened in Meeting #2 and see if I actually get what I need and have asked for twice already.

They also likely have highly detailed productivity metrics that show a general trend downward.

Apple also heavily leveraged it's physical space pre-COVID, even going so far as to fly it's embedded sales people (ex - the people you'd find in a Best Buy) to California for several weeks for on-site training. This is the same campus that the high level execs all worked out - they would even brag about eating in the same cafeteria at the time.

Apple Stores aren't just stores, but are often times "hang out" spots - for team meetings, celebrations, and so on. The store itself also hosts training/sales meetings for customers as well as the often mocked "Genius Bar". Apple also has "popup" locations in other stores as well (like Best Buy).

Apple's market is "trendy/cool" - meaning that it's very important that Apple (as a brand) is physically able to interact with it's market to ensure it can instill those values. Not just for customers, but also for employees. Being "an extremely cool place to work" is vital to Apple's hiring strategy and currently it's not "extremely cool" to work from home - most call center employees work from home currently.

Additionally - WFH probably has extremely expensive requirements for Apple for those working on confidential products, the kind you don't want leaking out in embarrassing ways.

They're not a normal business and a physical space has been a key part of their brand for quite some time, which is why they're kicking and screaming about the changes forced on them.

Work from home has been a God send to me.

While I am not in a position to do so due to my vocation, I had noticed a massive drop off in insane ooga booga idpol nonsense during the pandemic because all the dangerhairs in administration were at home focusing on their pibble fur babies and worrying about catching the Chinese Bat Virus.

Since more of them are back into their offices, the number of ridiculous workshops, seminars, and training sessions has spiralled out of control. The memorable two from this week were: Aboriginal Yarning Circle, How to use Inclusivity Language when dealing with LGBTQIA patients).

Let the fucking bugmen and their harpies work from home in fear. Please, for the sake of the rest of us that aren't fucking retarded.

Imagine these entitled twats working a construction site or moving furniture or husking corn or plunging into a mine or driving a semi 6 days a week.

They'd have a mental breakdown within that week.

And these are the people telling us communism is a good thing.

They tell us we must rise up as proletariats, while also telling us we're useless chuds,

All while they sit at home or in an air conditioned office and cry that they have to be at said office 3 whole days a week.

Remember though, blue collar people, you are the problem.

If there ever is a proletariat workers revolution in America, tech workers would be some of the first against the wall.

It's been two years. Any company trying to shift back to office work when they've kept afloat being strictly WFH has missed the window to go back. Enjoy bleeding employees.

I don't wanna pay some huge amount of money every time I want to use the fast lane either tbh
That should honestly be an Autobahn lane for the prices being floated but you still have motherfuckers doing only 75 in it.
Things must have sped up since I left.

The carpool lane around the Peninsula used to be the natural habitat of Prius drivers refusing to go 1 mile an hour faster than the speed limit because they got an HOV sticker for their electric shitbox.

Air conditioning has been one of the biggest contributors to female empowerment. If the office wasn't so comfortable, they wouldn't find it liberating. They also can't fathom a world without it; so when they shriek about how women were always oppressed and kept at home, they fail to understand that home air conditioning didn't become common till the 1950's.
