Disaster Apple employees criticize work-from-home policy in open letter - Employees say two day WFH policy would lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce

A group of Apple employees have written an open letter to the company's executive team complaining about its new policy that only allows for two days of working from home, iMore has reported. They said that Apple's reasons for implementing the policy don't stand up, and that the policy is wasteful, inflexible and will lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce.

"You have characterized the decision for the Hybrid Working Pilot as being about combining the "need to commune in-person" and the value of flexible work," the letter states. "But in reality, it does not recognize flexible work and is only driven by fear. Fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy, fear of losing control."

We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely? How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?

In March, Apple announced that corporate employees would be returning to the office, and need to be there two days a week at minimum by May 2nd. Starting May 23rd, it'll shift to a hybrid model with mandatory office days on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. CEO Tim Cook called in-person collaboration benefits "irreplaceable" and in an email, the executive team talked about the importance of "the serendipity that comes from bumping into colleagues" during in-person work.

However, the letter counters those arguments saying that in-person collaboration is not even needed monthly in some cases. It also disputed the "serendipity" statement, saying that Apple's siloed office structure makes it difficult to bump into colleagues, adding that remote tools like Slack are better for collaboration. Furthermore, Apple's open-plan offices limit the concentration "required for creativity and... deep thought," they said.

It noted that a daily commute "is a huge waste of time as well as both mental and physical resources." At the same time, it said that the policy favors people who can afford to live near the office and don't have to perform care-work. "In short, it will lead to privileges deciding who can work for Apple, not who’d be the best fit."

Perhaps the most compelling argument was that Apple was being hypocritical in the way it markets its own products. "We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely?" the letter states. "How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?"

The letter is another sign of growing employee discontent at Apple, which often presents itself as progressive and inclusive in its ads. Employees recently started organizing a push for "real change" at the company, citing "a pattern of isolation, degradation and gaslighting," and even created an #AppleToo movement. The company is also facing a probe by the US National Labor Relations Board, which is looking into complaints over hostile working conditions.

Get back to work, you fucking lazy slobs *cracks whip*

Your Covid party is over. Go back to the white dominated places you hate so much and give me a fucking coffee and it better have only ONE spoon of sugar this time!

Última edición:
"Neuro-normative". So, people who aren't fucking crazy. Got it. And able-bodied people are generally an asset to any workforce. Waaaah I have to drive to work and it's triggering! Fucking die, limp wristed shitlibs.

If you want to work from home so badly, get some skills that allow you to make that your bartering piece when you interview. It’s really that simple.

I’m almost certain that most of these leftist fucks are actually 100% done with COVID, but still cling onto it so that they can fuck around and play video games all day while they “work” from home.

It's big tech, it probably means less autists.

Autists are kind of good in big tech because they're good at speaking very literally like computers do, losing too many autists is bad. But also having too many autists risks having the devs program exactly what they're told to do, which isn't always what people want them to do, because people are bad at defining the problem.

So losing a few neuro divergent people is a double edged sword.

This is just people trying to co-op the woke language to get work-from-home because every change from management is always coaxed in how much it helps "marginalized groups". I doubt they actually believe any of the woke stuff they've written in the letter. A lot of tech people in the Bay Area want remote work so they can escape clown world where houses cost over a million dollars per bedroom and move to a cheaper area not run by morons. Working 3 days a week in the office means you still have to live in California; it is management's attempt at a "compromise" which doesn't give any of the benefits of remote work but preserves the value of their billions of dollars worth of real estate.

I doubt this letter will work though as more people signed anti-vaccine mandate letters despite the severe career risk than signed any of the anti-racism/sexual harassment open letters (which people are often pressured into signing) that you may have seen the press parading around. Didn't stop the woke leadership of these companies from mandating vaccines and licking BLM's boots.

Apple desperately needs to keep people in-office with enough employee time and resources wasted on commuting and 'office culture' that they don't improve their skills and contacts to the point of finding employment elsewhere.

The mystery meat posturing is a blind. Apple is prestigious to work for but has an awful management culture. They need to keep people locked into the the faerie banquet of company culture to keep promising employees from seeing through the illusion.

“Apple's siloed office structure makes it difficult to bump into colleagues”

“Apple's open-plan offices limit the concentration ‘required for creativity and... deep thought,’”

Pick a lane.

So, what do you want?

Living in a sepia tinted hipsterfornia consoomer fantasy with hip corporate cUlTuRe, tons of free food and drinks and quirky office activities with the expected cost of living associated with it? Or a remote working job that doesn't have to pay a bay area wage because you can do it from Bullfrog, ND as well?

Do they really expect Apple leaves those mega campuses sit vacant just so they can WFH while corporate is paying double premium on Cali/Big City wages, benefits (muh gym membership! Muh laundry!) AND the running costs for the offices?

I didn't go to college but even for me something doesn't add up here... Is this just my neuro-normative, cis white male privilege speaking?

A mixture of WFH and present work should be the norm, with WFH being at most two days a week. This would be very helpful for parents. Unless you are literally disabled, you shouldn't expect accommodations for you to stay home. People need to watch Fat Homer episode again... tsk, tsk.

Well see it's a very nice cake. Aesthetically it is just impeccable. They could really look at it all day. But their stomach is growling and they would just love to eat the whole thing. Somehow they have deluded themselves into thinking they can actually have both.

Billions on the space ship building need to have an ROI and the drones must go back to the mothership

All of those things are net positives.
Maybe they're tired of working with Ed from Cowboy Bebop and their overweight transexual Eskimo life partner.
