Disaster Apple employees criticize work-from-home policy in open letter - Employees say two day WFH policy would lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce

A group of Apple employees have written an open letter to the company's executive team complaining about its new policy that only allows for two days of working from home, iMore has reported. They said that Apple's reasons for implementing the policy don't stand up, and that the policy is wasteful, inflexible and will lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce.

"You have characterized the decision for the Hybrid Working Pilot as being about combining the "need to commune in-person" and the value of flexible work," the letter states. "But in reality, it does not recognize flexible work and is only driven by fear. Fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy, fear of losing control."

We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely? How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?

In March, Apple announced that corporate employees would be returning to the office, and need to be there two days a week at minimum by May 2nd. Starting May 23rd, it'll shift to a hybrid model with mandatory office days on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. CEO Tim Cook called in-person collaboration benefits "irreplaceable" and in an email, the executive team talked about the importance of "the serendipity that comes from bumping into colleagues" during in-person work.

However, the letter counters those arguments saying that in-person collaboration is not even needed monthly in some cases. It also disputed the "serendipity" statement, saying that Apple's siloed office structure makes it difficult to bump into colleagues, adding that remote tools like Slack are better for collaboration. Furthermore, Apple's open-plan offices limit the concentration "required for creativity and... deep thought," they said.

It noted that a daily commute "is a huge waste of time as well as both mental and physical resources." At the same time, it said that the policy favors people who can afford to live near the office and don't have to perform care-work. "In short, it will lead to privileges deciding who can work for Apple, not who’d be the best fit."

Perhaps the most compelling argument was that Apple was being hypocritical in the way it markets its own products. "We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely?" the letter states. "How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?"

The letter is another sign of growing employee discontent at Apple, which often presents itself as progressive and inclusive in its ads. Employees recently started organizing a push for "real change" at the company, citing "a pattern of isolation, degradation and gaslighting," and even created an #AppleToo movement. The company is also facing a probe by the US National Labor Relations Board, which is looking into complaints over hostile working conditions.

pretty sure most young, white, able bodied, neurotypical heterosexual men with tech skillz all negotiate remote work because they want to start families in Idaho

"A group of employees" a group is a minimum of two people.

Would be nice to know how many people actually share this opinion.

But sensationalism in the media to upset cuckservitives and libshits is hilarious.

Especially frothing at the mouth in this forum whenever a tranny says something.

Yep. The woke stuff is bullshit. But making people come in to some office to do tasks they did perfectly well at home for the last 2 years is worse bullshit. The reason corporations do this isn't anything to do with it being a better way to get things done. It's because they want to force a cult-like "work family" environment and siphon away as much of your life force and will to live as possible.
this is a very plausible and persuasive idea but the push to go back to the office is way more about people who will lose money on expensive office space than it is about corporate cultic indocrination. the silicon valley tech giants just aren't very good at that, and they fundamentally can't be. you can't indoctrinate people into blind loyalty to an employer that everyone knows headhunted the guy you're working with for twice your salary and everyone knows you'll be leaving for greener pasterus ship as soon as you ship.

While I don't disagree about corps sucking our life force dry, I've heard in quite a few places that work from home in tech has largely been a disaster. Rumor is, a lot of the big, established tech companies are coasting on the fumes of work done before March 2020. The diversity hires do nothing but screech; the real devs are completely demoralized.

I'm still in school for compsci, and not yet in the workforce, but I've been trying, and failing, to get our senior year project finished, and it's impossible to coordinate real work over Zoom. I can see why WFH is so difficult for real jobs like this (email jobs are worthless anyway) since it's hard to hold people accountable if you never see them in person.

It's possible that things fell apart in 2020 100% due to covid but it's also awfully convenient to have covid and enforced WFH to blame for the easily predictable results of many years of fuckery.

younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied
I can't imagine an employer that actually worries about their bottom line thinking that this is a negative. Also, I'd fully support having the H1B program end with every single one of the applicants fed to crocodiles for a couple of years until the rest get the fucking hint. I know it won't happen, but a man can dream, right?

If accurate, what a great way to get rid of useless people. No one can actually sue over being expected to perform the normal job duties they were hired to perform, and unless they were hired specifically to WFH, which anyone being called *back* to the office was not, they can either comply or resign.

Get rid of them, give it six months, then start to reconfigure your setup if you want. WFH then becomes a tool for retaining your best people, not a way for the least productive to hide.

The real problem is that the DEI and other useless administrators won’t actually resign since that scam is circling the drain and they’re not going to find much WFH opportunity elsewhere.

Whiter.... how the fuck does reducing the time you can work from home make the workforce whiter?
When POC work from home, they eat more ethnic food and listen to loud rap music, which maintains their skin color. When POC work in the office, they turn white over time due to exposure to other whites. Gradually POC will no longer have "rhythm" and they will watch shows like Grey's Anatomy. I watched this guy from Nigeria turn into Ted McGinley back in the 2000s-- all at Apple.

This is the most bizarre performative way to try to avoid rush hour traffic in the Bay Area I've ever seen. :story:
I don't wanna pay some huge amount of money every time I want to use the fast lane either tbh
That should honestly be an Autobahn lane for the prices being floated but you still have motherfuckers doing only 75 in it.

ITT: people without the option of work from home barely concealing jealousy and resentment.

I work from home and am in a leadership role and a good 40% of my job is having to repeat myself over and over and over again because the people who write letters like this don't take their job seriously enough to pay attention.

If you lack the self discipline enough to work with somebody face to face and look them in the eye, you sure a shit lack self discipline in private.

I'm about to fly out to a dozen or so offices and retrain, again, groups who continue to put in sloppy work.

Why not fire them? Because 9/10 I'd replace them with someone just as bad.

This is a really weird take and I have no idea what your point is. You’re just describing being in a management position.

I mean I do get it for people who have niche jobs and don't want to spend 3 or 4 hours commuting because our roadway infrastructure is completely fucked and buying a house in the city is next to impossible these days (note that both these issues are at least in part caused from the same problem - mass immigration and overpopulation, which the people complaining about this blindly support). But god damn address the actual issues instead of pushing this ID politics bullshit. They say how are people going to take them seriously in terms of their products being great for remote work when they are pushing a return to office. How is anyone going to take your case seriously when you just spout woke bullshit like that? Lmao #AppleToo movement get the fuck outta here

Plus, they're allowing 2 days a week working from home. Sounds like a decent compromise to me. Better than zero. Plus working from home all the time during the pandemic definitely had it's shitty aspects. The hybrid option sounds pretty good to me.

you know how the internet is currently full of people pointing out that Congress had 50 years to do a federal legislative fix to the clusterfuck of Roe but didn't do shit?

it's not at all unlike the situation with transit in the Bay Area, except not about babykilling. the tech giants have been totally failing to interact with local politics on a nonretarded level since the 80s. the bay area should have a transit system that is the glory of the universe. but instead, literally the smartest people in the world have been sitting there looking at traffic and saying "what do" for *fucking decades.* the best they could manage was private shuttles that people threw shit at.
