Fantano compares it to legacy metal bands who tour despite having no original members. At that point you're basically just seeing a cover band with the license to use the name and logo.

Gorillaz has some core members. Damon is the writer and singer. Jamie does the art. Other than that it's a rotating cast of musicians and they rely heavily on collaboration and digital production. A reboot could be cool. It would be like rebooting a cartoon show.

The idea was really to spoof "corporate" bands by making one that was entirely fake, which the irony is not lost on it basically became a brand, but the original first 3 Albums had a bunch of lore and an underlying story to them which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, it basically all imploded after the 3rd Album (Plastic Beach) and they truly don't give a shit anymore.

in general the only time they really did something interesting was with yanqui UXO and even that wasn't perfect. such a performative and jewish band too lol. taking your music off streaming so you can be "for the people" isn't helping niggas. branca, talk talk and slint didn't try to get you with any of that.

it's because a lot of "artists" (or probably just godspeed in this case) simply want sensational attention with "free palestine" and niggas not giving them money rather than putting actual effort into their music. coming from somebody that uses winamp and soulseek it's a dumb move and doesn't change anything.
