I wish Satoshi Kon did not develop pancreatic cancer. I have seen all the anime he directed and I think he had insights into the human condition that most people in the industry lack.
DBZ introduced my two favorite characters, Android 18 and Vegeta.
It also turned to a more serious tone.
I feel like the character development and overall story was better in DB.
It was also more fun.
Oh, definitely, but Dragon Ball started the serious tone a lot earlier than people remember. Probably around when King Piccolo was introduced.
Character development-wise, yeah, Toriyama dropped the ball with Gohan, though a lot of people forget that Goku's character Development essentially ended with Namek. By the time he turned Super Saiyan his arc was fully done.
Right place, right time. I was around when DBZ rode the anime boom into the west. Coming home from school and watching DBZ wasn't a case of "Let's watch this cool thing from Japan". It was "Let's watch this awesome cartoon where people rage scream/punch each other/get bisected." At least in my circles growing up, it was a kickass cartoon before it was an anime.

When Anime exploded during my childhood in Germanistan the moment DBZ was airing the entire neighborhood turned into a ghost town. All the kids playing around, screaming and whatever else kids do it all suddenly stopped, and they all vanished in the blink of an eye. Never witnessed anything similar like that, even Pokémon didn't have that effect.

This was pretty much it yeah, every anime that blew up in popularity that aired on toonami and adult swim blew up because kids had never seen anything like it before. That's why most anime you associate with the 90s blew up, hell most of the anime aired in the early 2000s blew up because they rode the coattails of those 90s anime
I only had Fist Of The North Star, Akira, and about a dozen or so episodes of Star Blazers all on VHS for years. Suncoast video in the malls blew my mind when they had a whole fucking WALL of Anime to choose from.

Miyazaki rarely does anything besides "war/humans bad, environment good". While Satoshi's work had a lot more bite than just be pretty pictures with a plot for kid. I meant rot as most anime directors eventually shit the bed, not sure if Miyazaki as well, his latest works are more divisive.
Also I fucking hate Castle Of Cagliostro, completely sterilized Lupin from anything that makes him great into generic romantic thief. It's only good if you never watched Lupin media or think it as problematic.
