A spike in gun violence on Chicago's streets during the weekend prompted an impassioned news conference by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson Monday morning.

Preliminary totals show at least 10 people were killed and another 53 people were wounded in shootings between 5 p.m. on Friday and midnight Sunday.

Rev. Jesse Jackson tweeted, "Nine dead, dozens shot, trauma centers overwhelmed. We need sensible gun control, a plan for urban reconstruction, futures, not funerals."

Chicago police said a total of 66 people were shot from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Sunday and 12 of those victims have died.

At a press conference Monday morning with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said more needs to be done to hold repeat gun offenders accountable.

"It is the same people who are pulling the triggers in some of these communities. This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of the city. This is a small subset of individuals who think they can play by their own rules because they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we arrest them," Johnson said.

Police say they know some of the shootings have been random and some targeted and related to gang conflicts.

There’s a myriad of problems that’s contributing to all of this:

• The LaQuan McDonald shooting (a black teenager who was high on PCP and was slashing police tires and wouldn’t listen to cops and got shot and killed by one) has caused a lot of cops in Chicago to not respond aggressively to crime for fear of being racis.
• The city reached a settlement with the ACLU where every time a cop does a stop and frisk, they must fill out a ton of paperwork that goes to the ACLU. Stop and frisks are down significantly and crime has risen dramatically; ACLU calls this a success.
• The projects (Cabrini Green) were torn down. As a result, many of the gangs got split up and less centralized. Hence you have random dindus doing drive bys because another dindu dissed someone’s baby mama on social media. Previously, gang leaders frowned on this shit since murder trumps drug dealing every day of the week, and would secretly snitch out those assholes to protect the organization and prevent too much attention being drawn to them.
• The community doesn’t give a shit about all the violence. They know who commits the crime but they refuse to ID them, either from fear of retaliation or because they’re in a gang themselves. For example, a 6 year old was executed and the father knew who did it, but refused to cooperate with police because of his gang loyalties. As a result, only 10-20% of murders are solved.
• The new attorney general wants a focus on “restorative justice”. There’s also been changes to bail, as well as anyone under 18 pretty much being allowed to do whatever they want with little to no consequences.

TL;DR, good intentions and feel-good SJW policies have helped Chicago become the crime disaster it is today.

Although, that stat may be misleading because of the badness of the black part of Chicago (which is probably large enough to be its own city) is really helped by the not terribleness of the white part.

You're right. I read the Baltimore Sun everyday, and everyday there are usually murders.

Baltimore is #2 in that list. No surprise to me.

In 2016, Illinois passed a law that stopped the automatic transfer of minors to adult court when they were charged with "aggravated vehicular hijacking or armed robbery with a firearm." It was another stupid SJW attempt to stop the "school-to-prison pipeline".

The word quickly spread that dindu kids had a get-out-of-jail-free card, and carjacking became a popular extracurricular activity.

Carjackings exploded in 2016, again in 2017, and still again in the current year. Nobody can figure out why. It's a real headscratcher.

I remember having to go to a wedding in the city almost two years ago; had to book a hotel room as well. The wedding took place in the "nice part" of the city. The people in the room next to me threw a party that proceeded until 4 in the morning; I called the front desk to complain about the noise level multiple times and they did jack shit about it. The party ended in a literal fight in the hallway (right in front of my door, so I was basically trapped in my room), and I heard someone threatening to shoot someone else. In my hotel room at 4am, I got down on the floor and dialed 911. The cops only showed up to the fucking front desk. Luckily nothing happened in terms of the violence escalating, but I was scared shitless that night.

I also know a person who was mugged and shot twice in Baltimore; he almost died. Baltimore is an absolute SHIT HOLE, and I actively avoid it whenever I can these days. I hate that city with every fiber of my being. It's dirty, and it's one of the murder and crime capitals of the United States, no question. The only true nice parts of the city are the places that are expensive (but run down) because of how it appeals to white hipsters. That city really contains everything I hate.

I never EVER plan to visit Chicago. The stats don't lie: It's a warzone these days. And look at Detroit, too. This is what happens when you have decades of leftist policies controlling your cities. The drugs are illegal because they fuel other industries & the heads of those industries. Prisons don't want less drug offenders, then want more non-violent(on average) slaves.
