1980s anime aesthetic - I remember when they used to animate on ones

Sakigake!! Otokojuku was famous for being inspired by the art style of Fist of The North Star, but instead of Kenshiro, you have deliquents with martial arts skills.

The fact that this came out in the same decade as FoTS and even Jojo’s says a lot about what the 80’s were like with real tough action heroes.

It's an anime to me.

(It features really crappy puppetry and stop motion, so technically there is animation. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

So with Bastard!! getting a new adaptation, how much you wanna bet they're going to take away most of the '80s look? Because clearly everything needs to be modernized now (looking at you, Banana Fish).
Isn't a lot of the reason the 80's look is gone from new adaptations because the animation is digital now, which is a lot cheaper and faster, but also just can't look the same?

Or are you just referring to the clothes and hair?

Even though it's early 2000s, I'll throw Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust into the mix because it was all hand-drawn and painted, and I think it still has an 80s-90s aesthetic. Backgrounds are beautiful as well.

Just the look in general, but it's most likely a bit of all the above. Adaptations tend to use the more recent-looking art-style, and if Hagiwara's style evolved over the years since the manga has run for a few decades, and the '80s look has disappeared as a result, that's going to be gone regardless of animation tools.

Also irrc wasnt the pokemon rocket seizure episode one of the reasons why they had to change the way they animated

The frame-rate and look haven't changed, they just have to be more mindful of flashing colors. That's why action sequences in broadcast versions tend to have a dark filter over them, though I believe that actually gets removed for physical media release.

For the people who liked the Daicon Opening Animations, here are some more SF convention opening animations from the early 1980s:

Metal Skin Panic Madox01
40-some minutes of 80s exosuit action. It's like Akira without the plot

Just binge watched the entirety of the '87 Bubblegum crisis. The animation and soundtrack are top notch, the mecha battles are all fantastic and the series ramps everything up as it goes along. The story and character development are pretty weak but it's not really detrimental to the series.

I get mad Evangelion vibes from some of the design, there's gotta be some crossover on the artistic staff.
