1980s anime aesthetic - I remember when they used to animate on ones

There was something so slick about the look to '80s anime, it's like CalArts style done correctly given the curves. There was fluidity that wasn't exactly there in the '70s, and that may have been due to the rise of OVAs allowing animators to just go nuts and show off their skills.

Also cross-posting from the anime thread 'cause the topic of '80s anime was brought up and I just have to say that I miss the number of OPs where the characters danced or did some moves in front of solid shapes and colors. You don't get that sense of characters looking like they're putting on a play much anymore.

If you want an extremely well made, hand drawn 80s-anime movie that isn't Akira or a Hayao Miyazaki joint, you might want to check out Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise from 1987. The attention to detail in the visuals is insane and the movie (which takes place in a fantasy world/alternate reality) has some of the best world-building ever. It was the debut work of studio Gainax, who later made some obscure stuff called Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Also: the movie score is composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and has that unique analog synthesizer/orchestral 80s atmosphere that even the most competent synthwave artists don't seem capable of capturing.

Note: linked movie clip below contains scenes from late in the movie and might be considered spoliers.

Yeah, i really liked the aethestic of that time. Probably the best decade of massive media, including music.

(I'm not kidding, this is a frame of one of the first chapters in Hokuto no Ken)
Sadly i'm too young to feel that shit. At least the sequel of the novel i'm working on is filled with that aethestic.

Remember it was the Pokemon anime that killed colouring for every anime afterwards.
I thought it was Yu-Gi-Oh? Pokémon didn't go digital coloring officially until 2002 (Mewtwo Returns was completely digitally-painted for late-2000s), meanwhile, Toei was digitally painting the cels since the late-90s. And Love Hina was fully digitally animated and colored.

But if you're talking about the seizure-inducing flashing colors, honestly, I'm shocked it took until Pokémon to implement safety measures.

You can just pump Shirow Masamunes stuff right into my veins.

A big problem with today's anime is that they're moe lolibait. The 80s were all about leggy women and it fuckin ruled.

I'll say it now, masculine but lean anime women are so much fucking better then the literal 11 year old's we get in modern anime.

What I think is interesting is that while the lyrics of the original Japanese intro are from the prespective of Lum
Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you, love you, love you the best!

love you, love you, love you!

love you, love you, love you!

love you, love you, love you!

On nights when the stars are twinkling,

I dream all about you.

I love you, but you act like you don't know.

I bet you're crazy for someone else by now!

Ah! Men all have

so many loves.

Ah! You're spreading them all over,

and making me worry!

Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you the best!

Ah! How many lovers

does a man want?

Ah! Love only me,

and me alone, always.

Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you the best!

Always the best!

Everything about you, I

love, love, love,

love, love, love,

I love you the best!

The Italian dub of the intro has completely different lyrics from Ataru:

This one will be a strange love (oh aoaoh)
it burns in, out, here, there (oh aoaoh)
only one gaze and the flame is already turned on
Do I run away, stay, break free, come back, who knows?

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
if we can never make a mistake

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win...

In my fate there's not peace (oh aoaoh)
no one in the world is as crazy as you (oh aoaoh)
You look at me smiling and I shiver because I know
Do I run away, stay, break free, come back, who knows?

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
if we can never make a mistake

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win...

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win.
A few members of the staff who worked on Urusei Yatsura tried to make an americanized version called Galaxy Highschool/Teenagers from Outerspace. It re-used story concepts and some similar scene layouts for animation.

The Lum stand-in is the girl in the short brown hair.
