Metal Gear Solid 2 is a steaming pile of piss

I remember having the "Raiden twist" spoiled for me by fucking Gamepro because some dumbass put a Raiden screenshot in the magazine's review.
All the magazines did that. I remember the EGM review went something along the lines of, "brace yourself, Solid Snake is NOT the main character of MGS2", next to a big page splash of Raiden's head.

It had to be damage control: stop word-of-mouth from spreading.

Makes me kinda glad that all those old gaming magazines died out.

It's because Kojima is obsessed with making friends with actors and Hollywood people more than making fun and interesting games
He was a victim of his own success, once everyone started calling him "genius" he no longer had to actually work to achieve that.

A similar thing happened with Steven Spielberg, once he won an Oscar he never made another movie as special as something like Jurassic Park or E.T. again.

MGS2 is a revamp of the MGS plot with a lot of post-modernism. Game is fun and the plot is good.
For me, shit got insane with MGS4 and the subsequent games. I'm fucking sure Konami started to drain Kojima's balls at this highest point.
One thing I don't see people talk about enough is how Metal Gear Solid reused a lot of the same story beats as Metal Gear 2, even down to getting ambushed on an elevator and having to use hot and cold to change a keycard, when I first played Metal Gear 2 I was surprised how similar it was.

And it makes sense why Kojima would reuse them because Metal Gear 2 is an impressive achievement itself, but almost no one would have played it due to it never being released outside of Japan and being released on a platform probably not many had within Japan, so why reinvent the wheel? Why not tell a similar story because this time you can use voice acting, which is innovative enough?

And you can see then where he would have gotten the idea to be post modern with it by asking himself the question "what if the next game follows similar story beats again, but this time it's because of a purposeful conspiracy?"

I think had more gamers played Metal Gear 2, what MGS2 was doing would have made a little sense, instead it struck people as more out of left field than it otherwise would have because it was repeating tropes that seemed to have only been used once, instead of twice.

I'll give the devs the benefit of the doubt. Ocarina is more or less Link to the Past, in 3D. Conversely, Megaman Legends was a reboot, and no one talks about that.

Evidently, Kojima had a lot of nonsense ideas that got thrown out immediately. Which may explain why MGS1 plays it safe, scenario-wise.

Didn't he originally want Snake to be an old man in his 50's in MGS 1? Hence all the "age hasn't slowed you down" shit in the script even though he's only like 32? I know Kojima apologists will say that is the accelerated aging, but that makes no sense cause Campbell wouldn't know about that and would still be commenting on a 30 year old guy.

Older James Bond. He envisioned Snake as a "dandy" and Hal as a slobbish gaijin.

He also spoke of Christopher Walken being an influence.🤔

I don't know how true it is, but I've always heard stories that there was no Cyborg Ninja until Shinkawa showed Kojima a drawing of it he did on his own time.

I always wondered if that might have had something to do with Kojima going full authoritarian. A lot of fucking people loved Gray Fox back in the day and I wonder if he didn't like an idea that wasn't really *his* getting a lot of love.

The same disease destroyed George Lucas: As the adage goes, I'd rather make a dime my way than a dollar somebody else's way.

I am very much a boomer. I played the NES Metal Gear pretty close to release, I got it on my birthday in 1988 while in Jr high, I played it a lot, even beat it after a bit. Absolutely loved it.

So then I played MGS1 and 2 when they came out, and enjoyed them, but I know I can't replay them and not hate them, shit was clunky. MGS3 was also guilty of this, but subsistence fixed most of it. 4 played okay, but the cutscenes were way too many and for way too long. I liked Peace Walker, but I hated the story, and I was annoyed that rescuing Paz (the worst MGS character by a mile) was the point of GZ, but then pretty happy when she got blow'd up, albeit in a pretty fucked up way.

V and GZ are my favorite to play now, and I still think V was damn near flawless outside of not getting the final boss battle it needed. GZ is a fun tech demo to fuck around with and all the missions are fun despite taking place on the same exact piece of tiny ass real estate.

But all that said, 2 was the worst to play outside of a few sections, and I feel the sleepy dart gun mechanic really hurt the series moving forward, because no kill runs are boring at best and frustrating at worst

VR Missions basically was marketed on the basis that you could play as Gray Fox. Some people literally bought it just for those three missions.

I've always had a thought that a part of the reason he made Raiden was because people "wanted to play a Ninja" and he could be like "there, I gave you what you wanted." in a backhanded sort of way.

It kind of goes into the whole "MGS 2 is just MGS 1 which is what people say they want but not really" sort of deal

If anything, I would blame Kojima expected too much of average MGS fans not to be smooth brained idiots and wanted tangible explanations for everything.
Like, MGS2 is already clear to anyone with a working brain. There's no need to actually explain what is the Patriots. But fans want more, concrete explanation to what they are and what their goal is, so Kojima spent 2 games trying to retcon everything just to give the fans what they want.
Kojima just filled MGS1 with Hollywood references and his past Metal Gear games and Japanese surreal books that he read.
For some reason people really liked it and hail it as "video games can be art" or "video games can tackle mature topics"

Kojima: I'mma gonna make a game filled with movie references
hideo-kojima-smile.jpg
People like it and praise for its serious and mature tones.
Kojima: Oh cool, they like it. I'll make a game with really smart writing with layers upon layers of postmodernism and social commentary....

Gamers: MGS2 is shit and stupid.

Saying Kojima is a "master troll" when he's so clearly not is another of saying I'm not confident in my ability to entertain discerning adults so I'm setting the bar low.

MGS2 was made to be controversial.

being controversial is the least of the intent of MGS2.
Every single aspect of MGS2 (or at least the ones that wasnt cut) was all about realization of self and breaking the shackles of control of culture. And Kojima used video games as medium to deliver that message.

Just say you didn't like the message, or didn't get the message.... I get it.
But to say MGS 2 was made to be controversial, or like Kojima is trolling fans with Raiden, is far from the truth and misrepresents MGS2's message and intent.

Exactly, it's the one thing I liked most about it and Revengeance. The idea that the single greatest weapon you have against the media, government and military industrial complex is being able to think for yourself and communicate ideas with others. Raiden is almost a perfect Ayn Rand character while Big Boss is an Orwellian take on the same concept. One that's been twisted by a set of good ideals in a battle against others who believe the same thing, but want a different path that intersects more than they want to admit but not as much as they'd like it to.

It's a big part of why I like the original MG and V so much, it's circular story telling that picks up a little more nuance with each revolution of the wheel.
