Metal Gear Solid 2 is a steaming pile of piss

M9 gets more OP in each passing game.

It gets more OP, but I also feel like it becomes less mandatory.

Replaying the series, it was jarring as fuck going from MGS 1 to MGS 2. Especially once you got to the Big Shell. It just felt like there was less thought into how you'd path unnoticed through areas instead relying on tranqing and getting out quick.

I mean, I guess that was probably to really push hiding bodies and using lockers and everything, but I think it is a step down when it feels almost mandatory instead of just being an option.

Thinking about it though, I guess I should give MGS2 a pass on this overall. MGS 1 also really had no design thought put into difficulty levels when you realize just how much bullshit that game becomes if you don't have soliton radar to track enemy movements. It can be DONE without it, but it becomes a hassle and not fun at all.

The way I've always thought of it is he's the Luke Skywalker to Snake's Han Solo.

Yeah, Han Solo is the cooler character, Raiden like Luke can be whiny, but that doesn't mean we don't like Luke either.

People were just shocked because they weren't expecting it, had Kojima maybe been more open about the new character people probably wouldn't have reacted as negatively.
As someone who was obsessively buying Playstation mags to learn more about MGS2 and who bought Zone of Enders to play the tanker I was legit pissed that my boy Snake was a side character.

Have you tried finding bombs in new locations with no radar on Euro Extreme?

Now, put one of those bombs on a f**king conveyer.

Arsenal was supposed to crash into the Statue of Liberty, along with most of lower Manhattan. Ironically, the WTC is untouched. Wild.

Because Solidus want the nuclear bomb to detonate at New York Stock Exchange, which depends on who you talk to, it is either where the Patroits AI computers are hidden, or because the symbolic gesture that the bankers controlled USA.

Welp, at least Kojima is right about one thing...
MGS2 was hugely influential on my personality and my questioning nature.

I had heard of Illuminati type conspiracy theories before, but MGS2 presented it in a way that felt a lot more believable, I just truly never really looked at the world the same way again after playing it.

Yeah, Arsenal crashing into New York and an after credits news report were cut I believe. I don't know if much more than that got cut though, the game came out only like 2 months after 9/11

IIRC he originally wanted MGS2 to involve a revived Liquid taking over a compound in Iraq or somewhere in the middle east. It's been so long though that maybe I'm mixing things up but I think that was a big reason middle east eventually got featured in MGS4.
I was under the impression that the original idea for 2 was a revived liquid hijacking a US aircraft carrier, which became the tanker, just one part of the game instead of the whole setting.

The amount of cut content is kind of ridiculous.

Snake was originally going to fight Liquid at the same time Raiden is battling Solidus, as a crowd of rooting spectators and mounted police look on.
I read up on all the cut content from 2 once and it sounds amazing, definitely wish the final game could have been like that, I wish they at least kept Max, she looks cute.

Actually, didn't they cut out the American flag falling on Solidus cause of 9/11? Raiden literally still cuts it in the cutscene even though it's not there.
That's such a shame because it would have been a very powerful, poetic image.

It's possible though that wasn't cut just because of 9/11 but also for technical reasons with the cloth physics of a flag, I know in Silent Hill 2 they wanted to have a scene where Pyramid Head grabs James by the throat and the camera actually zooms into first person and you see James' face reflected on pyramid head's helmet, foreshadowing the meaning behind Pyramid Head, but the PS2 couldn't do it.

On a side note, it's insane to think of Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2, two of the best games of all time, coming out within less than two months of each other, video games were simply on fucking fire back then.

And on another side note, in an eerie coincidence Silent Hill 2, which originally came out in September 2001, actually has the date "September 11th" in one of the files you can read.

I think the other side strut (as playable Snake) which is semi restored to Snake Tales. Most of the cut stuff is alot of ideas Kojima had implemented to succeeding games.
If you look at some of the original concept art for MGS2 you can see Olga wearing outfits that resemble Fragile's outfit in Death Stranding, 2 has been a well Kojima has been drawing from for quite a while it seems.

If that was the intent, it fell short: it's all contained to Shell 1. More of an Arrange Mode than an actual B-side. I know the VR Missions held my interest a lot better than Snake Tales.

The concept of External Gazer is great, though: The misdeeds of Rose & Raiden have earned "the combined hate of the entire universe"; the couple's mere presence "has the ability to destroy a world." :story:
External Gazer was my introduction to the concept of quantum mechanics and once again MGS2 blew my mind.

You can't help but wonder if there's a message there that the later games are not necessarily the "real" MGS universe, but instead games like 4 being in what you could maybe dub the "nanomachines" universe.

M9 gets more OP in each passing game.

At least in 2, the Russians were ordered to give status reports. So the guards would rush in if you shot the wrong guy.
"WHY HAVEN'T YOU GIVEN YOUR STATUS REPORT!?"

It's been almost a decade since I've played MGS1-3 sadly but I do remember playing 2 on hard was a real revelation, from what I remember it wasn't so easy as to just tranq everyone, it really felt like the difficulty the game was meant to be played at, same deal with 3.

1 on hard though turning off your soliton radar is bullshit, no point in bothering with that.

As someone who was obsessively buying Playstation mags to learn more about MGS2 and who bought Zone of Enders to play the tanker I was legit pissed that my boy Snake was a side character.
I can understand that, but Raiden is still a compelling character in his own way and it's not like Snake wasn't still a significant part of the game, frequently partnering up with Raiden, I felt like Snake and Raiden made a good duo, again it reminds me of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.

I enjoyed Snake a lot more in 2, even when you're not playing as him, than I enjoyed him in 4 despite you playing as him the whole game, which says it all.

Where did you get this image?

It's from Document of Metal Gear Solid 2.

It's got lots of neat stuff in it. Model viewer, cutscene viewer that lets you manipulate the camera but at the cost of no sound, behind the scenes videos of Kojima and the developers and internal alpha videos of the game.

One of hte more interesting things I remember were early prototypes of Snake where he was low poly like MGS1 but with much more detail, and a cel shaded version of Mei Ling that looked like a buffed up version of her VR Missions photography mode model.

It's worth checking out, even if you just emulate it (although IIRC there's some issues with the emulation). I don't think they ever re-released it outside of Japan so it might be hard or expensive to find now aftermarket.

You convinced me.
MGS2 is fucking awful.

I always like to say that MGS2 wasn't a revelation to me because I was raised in an environment that was full of conspiracy theorists and anti government types. For the longest time I found people saying it was mindblowing or that Kojima is a prophet funny because all this shit has been ingrained in me since I was born lol. I actually find his takedown of PMC's to be more prophetic, although he made them out to be a little too "mainstream" in his universe but hey who knows what will happen in the next ten years.

A Japanese game developer using our flag to condone insurrection. Nah.

In-groups are funny like that.
You convinced me. MGS2 is fucking awful.
MGS2 got more right than wrong:
  • In-universe, the "New York Incident" led to a dramatic rise in private military contracting and turmoil in the mideast. It even throws 9/11 truthers a bone, seeing as "George" really did strike Manhattan.
  • Solidus continuing on in the spirit of the Founding Fathers, having named himself after the Boston Tea Party; in his case, the perpetrators.
  • James Johnson: the son of a famous politician who became a puppet for much keener intellects, like Ocelot/Cheney.
  • The issue of censorship and surveillance by the Patriots, 12 years before the Snowden leaks
  • "Campbell's" speech at the end foresaw the rise of online echo chambers.

tbh The only shitty part of MGS2 is the Emma escort mission. Fuck that part.
The part where you're swimming underwater works because it's plays on the fear of drowning well.

The sniper part is pretty frustrating though.

MGS2 is a such a disappointment after the masterpiece of MGS1.
As much as I love 2 for what it is there is a special magic to MGS1 that Kojima never recaptured and you can't help but wonder what a 2 closer to it might have been like.

1 has the patented Kojima weirdness too but is also refreshingly down to Earth in a way 2 is not.

It's been nothing but diminishing returns with Kojima in general, MGS1 had a special magic he never recaptured, MGS2 has it's own special magic he's also never recaptured, even MGS3 had a special magic he once again has failed to recapture, MGS4 was just a mess, MGSV has good gameplay but it's story leaves you scratching your head, Death Stranding has a pretty good story but gameplay that leaves you scratching your head, it's frustrating that he just can't seem to totally knock it out of the park again, but hey, here's hoping.

Gamers hate trading down.

MGS2 had more versatility, but you're essentially starting over with a rookie agent and new characters. There are fewer assets and a lack of distinct themes for each room. You would never confuse the Blast Furnace song with the Tank Hangar song. The Gregorian chants from Shadow Moses do not fit the mood or characters in MGS2. But you can see how fans would feel short-changed.
