Metal Gear Solid 2 is a steaming pile of piss

Just say you didn't like the message, or didn't get the message.... I get it.
The goalposts are on wheels at this point:

The themes are too complex for your puny brain to understand. Critics are overgrown children who just want mindless action, rejecting a superior product of intelligence and subversion. Except it's just contrarianism and gotchas.

I take a more neutral position. Kojima brings a unique perspective to gaming, and that's worth defending. I don't trust every word which comes out of his mouth, though.

It's goalpost-moving: The themes are too complex for your puny brain to understand. That way, critics can be dismissed as overgrown children who just want mindless action, rejecting a superior product of intelligence and subversion. Except it's just contrarianism and gotchas.

I didn't even understand MGS2's message and themes till decades later and after replaying it many times. I don't get Star Ocean 3's message about god and his creation even after reading numerous deep analysis on it. I dont get Nier and its sequels and prequels even after mountains of mountains of praise and analysis of Automata's supposed message about humanist fables and stuff like faith and sense of purpose.

Could those game be better? absofuckinglutely. Could those games present their message better and make the people playing the games understand it easier? Fucking yes.

It isnt goal post moving. It is easy to retreat to your own world wrapped to form your own truth because you didn't understand it to make yourself feel validated in your own opinion.

TL;DR; : IT'S ABOUT ETHICS IN GAME CRITICISM!!! 😡😤

Now Death Stranding, after MGS2, Kojima should have learned since MGS2 that people doesn't like his games because of its writing or whatever, they like his games because they like operators operating operationally

There's a solid fucking game in the first two chapters of MGS4. It's a shame Kojimas hollywood bullshit got in the way.

Didn't he originally want Snake to be an old man in his 50's in MGS 1? Hence all the "age hasn't slowed you down" shit in the script even though he's only like 32? I know Kojima apologists will say that is the accelerated aging, but that makes no sense cause Campbell wouldn't know about that and would still be commenting on a 30 year old guy.
I could see that being a possibility. I've never heard anyone mention it but to me one of the movies he obviously pulled things from was the 1982 movie Firefox. Clint Eastwood was 50 in that movie, former military special ops glowie or whatever it was, he is retired and lives a secluded life up in Alaska until.. he has to infiltrate a soviet facility that houses a spectacular new weapon, the Firefox.
edit: there's even a sort of Otacon, not a dweeb like that, but insider scientists working on Firefox that helps him out.

Seems kind of familiar.

Personal opinion is that MGS2 had the best gameplay of the series next to MGS5.
The grip gauge compliments the Plant really well. There's a bit more verticality than in Shadow Moses or Groznyj Grad. (That's one area where Splinter Cell had an advantage: more scalable walls.)

3 had more freedom of movement; though I often got hand cramps. Hold R1 and then press L2 and R2 at the same time, to make Snake stand on tip-toe. Now use your right thumbstick to aim slowly from behind these barrels!

The Plant definitely improves on replays.

I enjoyed the homage to The Rock (Solidus has the same agenda as Hummel) and Total Recall, with Rosemary/Roy in place of Lori and Edgemar. Not sure if anyone else picked up on that, though; which is weird since Kojima is a movie guy.

Solidus and Venom are the only guys who I feel are 100% right in their actions. Everyone else is either too busy sucking the Boss' girl dick or trying to see who gets to tongue Big Bosses anus the hardest to actually look at what is happening around them and plan appropriately

What even was the point of the Legacy, anyway? I figured it would be used to build the Patiots' A.I. but it just kinda vanished.

Whatever.
It was a major plot point in Portable Ops. IIRC, in the end, Ocelot gets a hold of it along with the identities of the Philosophers and then makes an alliance with Zero, so you could speculate that it was used to fund all the shit Cipher would pull in the following years.

Portable Ops' place in the canon is pretty iffy tho, so who knows

I always thought the original intention was just to explain "who" the Patriots were and how they came to be. They were the rich and powerful, capitalists who had come to embody the idea of capitalism and used their wealth and influence to eventually control the US and by extension most of the world.

Then Portable Ops went with it being the way *Zero* funded his organization that became the Patriots because MGS fans are fucking retarded and needed the Patriots to be someone within the story. (and if Kojima fanatics really paid attention, they'd realize that MGS2 paints the picture much more towards it being the former than Zero and the MGS3 crew)

That was Kojimas biggest mistake and why I feel MGS4 was meant to be a massive fuck you to the people who wouldn't leave him alone. The Patriots should have always just been unseen AI created by unseen illuminati figures.

Honestly ask yourself, what does Zero creating the Patriots actually add to the story? At most, it causes drama between best buds Zero and Big Boss, but this was never actually followed up on as you *never* saw animosity or conflict between the two. Big Boss going to war against a shadow group that killed his mentor and treated soldiers as pawns ended up being the exact same as Big Boss going to war with his best friend.

It was a maguffin that somehow represents more money than the US Congress can vote itself in to debt with. I guess Zero used it to buy DARPA a new pony

As much as I love Snake and hate Raiden, I would actually have more respect for MGS2 if Snake was dead or dying. I thought he was supposed to be dying of Foxdie?

Maybe that'll be addressed in the rest of the series, I'll have to see. Seems that they completely ignored it in MGS2 though.
They ignored that in MGS2 because he was barely in MGS2. He's in only the tanker portion.

Never forget that every MGS was supposed to be the last one, so almost nothing had a point or purpose outside of just being a general way to move the plot forward or looking cool.

That's why the story is so fucked up the further you go.
Well every beyond was also supposed to be the last until V when he was excited with possibilities and cut short. There's an interesting story about how going from 1 to 2 began a mindset of how he progressed with each further game in that yeah he wanted to move on but at the same time he stopped servicing the baseline zero depth story and started serving the myriad of subtexts.

its a joke, he struggles at either and the writer he worked with had all the talent. He did however have a strong input that ended up being in service to something interesting, which is all the tiny details like being able to electrocute soldiers with downed electrical lines in V.
