Sometimes when I'm overcome with World of Darkness nostalgia, I ask myself: who could possibly be playing these games nowadays?

This wasn't the answer I hoped for.
My fatal mistake was checking out games that were being openly advertised online. In my defense, I normally ask friends for recommendations but since only one of the groups I'm in even plays oWoD and no one there knew of any STs looking for players, I didn't have a choice.

For the record, I looked at five different tables. They were all for W20, I joined (and left) during the character creation phase and I'm pretty sure none of these games actually got rolling. I'm sad this was before I joined the farms so I didn't think of saving screencaps, because there were some doozies.

I know that feeling. I try to run games, but since I live on the opposite side of the planet from my old groups, I've had to go fishing for players. And it's been amusing. Pretty much either I would get the turbosperg that had their entire vision of Werewolf, and that would metagame the ever-living fuck out of it. Like all their characters had encyclopedic knowledge of every spirit, Pentex subsidiary, gift, and all umbral realms. Then there are those that would apply with their My Little Pony avatars. Large portion of players would slap down lupus Get of Fenris Ahroun #1,488. But the most requests I got?

"Hey, would you be willing to run V5 instead?"

I tried to get into Werewolf again early last year and looked for a game online. Unfortunately, all the open groups I could find were pretty much taken over by screeching dangerhairs, idiots wanting to play Gaian gay sparkledogs, or people who think "ha ha my character fucks everything that moves" memes are funny. After the second Bad Dragon link I gave up.

That's just the most egregious thing, though. Back when I was playing Vampire consistently, there was this group in town who had a reputation for thinking a bit too hard about where their Garou's dicks went. I just assumed their ST was a furry because he enabled that bullshit. The one time I met some of these guys (it was a big event at our LGS at the time) I swear you could hear the mouthbreathing from the other side of the street.
Oh so the average group I first ran into when it came to Apocalypse. It's actually half the reason I didn't have interest in old Werewolf. The other half is I just don't care usually for playing like demented Captain Planet.

I'm thankful the ST I played under hated the cartoonish villainy of Pentex and gave us more nuanced enemies to fight when it came to preserving nature. Because seriously, fuck that fucking metaplot. (Sorry, @Pentex. Nothing personal.)

Anyone willing to run a WoD game? If anyone could make a non-shit game it would be us Kiwis.
I'd love to play a WoD game, but infosec is king here. If you guys get it going, give us the writeup here so I can enjoy the game vicariously.

I honestly feel like running a Bastet game, just to kill the "sexy catgirl" image that seems to be peddled by Phil.
Hoooo, boy. Bastet. So many cliches, so many jokes, but Jesus Fucking Christ on a tricycle, like all fera the Bastet can be terrifying when they want to be. Everybody forgets that the changing breeds are all predatory monsters at heart, and the Bastet are some of the most cunning.

I unironically believe you should ask your players to read Theodore Kaczynski's manifesto and Can Life Prevail? by Pentti Linkola. Some reading is often recommended to play Mage, so I think doing some reading before playing Werewolf is not a bad idea. It helps you get in the mood. Even larping as if you were inside a studio Ghibli movie like pompoko or mononoke hime is more akin to the spirit of the game than all this fur faggotry.

This is who's playing Vampire these days. This is also what the Swedecucks are encouraging.

LARP is trash and always has been. Adding Tik-Tok to LARP is like mixing up a cocktail of AIDS and Ebola on the rocks.
I just came here to whine about Mage, a game I loved in high school and college but whose 20th Anniversary edition might well be the most insufferable RPG book I've ever had the displeasure to read. Brucato's lunacy even infects the character creation chapter.

All takes on Mage welcome.
Mage was pretty insufferable even when it was 2nd edition and fun was still allowed.

Ah KoE. The Devil Tigers were my favorite of the original Dharmas. The Face of Gods were my favorite heretic Dharma.
The Kuei-jin were much too smug to be as much of a bunch of losers as they were. What made them losers?
1. God/August Personage of Jade said so.
2. So assblasted by European imperialism (strangely silent on Chinese imperialism) that they overextended themselves in California.
3. Akuma running rampant through the courts.
4. Yama Kings do not regard the Kuei-jin as any sort of threat.

Bants aside, I wish Risen (Kuei-jin minus 1337 AZN Kung Fu) had gotten more attention.
Also the War of Rage / Changing Breeds kinda reveals all these weird writer's bias against Garou. Like all these writers and their pet fera trying to paint werewolves as being dicks for zero reason of being dicks other than 'I wanna make Garou look like assholes'. Like I get it. Garou are brutal and warlike like wolves and kind of assholes but some of it is so evil villain hand rubbing together.

Like 'wow look at this AMAZING healing gifts wereboars had but those pesky Garou had to genocide the lot of them and that knowledge is now all lost! Behold werewolves are the dickheads all along!'

It's real dumb. Fera are dumb in general.
The Khan, Simba, and Nuwisha are awesome and I will not tolerate any opinions to the contrary.
Anyone willing to run a WoD game? If anyone could make a non-shit game it would be us Kiwis.
What's that you say? You want me to write up Susie Green as a Nephandus?

The arrogance is a bit of a turn off at times for me. The Nuwisha (and their signature character, Old Man Manyskins) are a hard group to dislike.

Can you at least tell us about these doozies?

Can you at least tell us about these doozies?
This all happened over Roll20 and Discord, and they all blend together a bit without screencaps. Anyway, grab some popcorn, this will be a bit long.
  1. As mentioned, it was the usual menagerie of troons, furries and SJWs.
  2. Every group had at least one obvious tranny, one of the groups was basically 4 trannies (including the ST), one "enby", and me. This group was surprisingly well-behaved, although someone being called a "she" instead of a "they" caused some friction.
  3. Most troons didn't even make an attempt to pass. One of them did, but he had the squeakiest, fakest falsetto voice in the world. I kind of felt bad for that one.
  4. There was an even 3-way split between anime girl avatars, furry avatars and pony avatars, with a 50% chance of any given one having either the trans flag colors, or the flag itself in the background. There were only two exceptions: one had a photo of a female Japanese model, the other had the flag of Croatia (???).
  5. The furries were, as expected, incredibly obnoxious and horny on main. As I mentioned, two of them were adamant about playing Lupus characters against the ST's advice (the chronicles were meant to be 90% urban) and had links to the Bad Dragon store in their characters' bios. They were in different games, and yes I can confirm they were unrelated people.
  6. Another furry spammed worgen porn in the #character-images channel, saying it was all "inspiration".
  7. I'm pretty sure the ST of one of the games was a gore fetishist. At least one of the players looked like one as well. I can't confirm because I left the moment I saw the first disemboweled naked anime girl in the server's image channel. I'm usually not squeamish, but I noped the fuck out of there.
  8. The Uktena player in one of the games was adamant that only First Nations players be allowed to play Uktena or Wendigo, and he (preferred pronouns: they/them) also referred to them exclusively as Older Brother and Younger Brother no matter how much it confused other players. I'm 100% certain that he's 1/16th native at most because he also posted a selfie and in that selfie he looked paler than me. (PL: I'm of Scottish/Manx ancestry and I cultivate a healthy office tan.)
  9. At least one of the furry trannies was definitely into watersports, talking at length about how his character "marked her territory". And yes, that "she" character had a dick. And no, she was not Lupus, she was Homid.
  10. I saw two people who I was pretty sure were natal women, not troons. One was ultra-woke and spent most of the time making smug jokes towards me, asking who had "let me in". The other was "non-binary" and claimed male pronouns but sounded (and looked, according to her selfies on twitter) like a very squeaky-voiced tomboy.
  11. All the Black Furies were lesbians, no exception.
  12. Two of the games outright forbid playing as Get of Fenris. A third "heavily discouraged" Get, Shadow Lords and Silver Fangs, under penalty of receiving less XP.
  13. One of the games had 8 (!) players signed up for it, and I was the only one planning to make a Garou. 3 were making Bastet characters (one legit asked the ST if they could partially transform to have cat ears and tail in Homid form), 2 were making ISO-standard trickster Corax characters, and the final 2 were furries who were trying to play as their fursonas (a Mokole and a Gurahl).
  14. One of the troons was completely obsessed with the idea of "mouthfeel", and wanted to play as a transgender Child of Gaia.
  15. I was "playfully" threatened with rape by the ST of one of the games when I suggested I'd make a male character since the pack was shaping up to be all-female.
  16. To their credit, two of the STs looked like they were trying to run a sane game, but they were constantly frustrated by the players being uncooperative and threatening to quit every time they heard a "no".
  17. One of the games nearly fell apart due to a split between Bernie Bros and the rest. I have no idea what caused it, and I'm sure the game fell apart for good shortly after I left.
  18. (Last edit, I swear) One of the players was European (British or Dutch, I don't remember) and insisted we play in the early mornings, despite everybody else in the group being American. In the ST's defense, he said "fuck that!" to that demand, which triggered a massive spergout from the Eurotrash.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head, and it's not all in chronological order. Again, this all happened between only five games I joined and then left. The longest I lasted in one of them before quitting was three weeks (the game hadn't started as I was the only one with a character sheet filled in by then), and the shortest was just a couple of hours (that was the goremonglers' server). I would say about a third of the players seemed relatively chill, or at least were mostly quiet and didn't trip any red flags, but the other two thirds more than made up for in with their insanity.

So yeah. That was my experience trying to pan for gold in the open sewer that was publicly-advertised W20 games in early 2020. Thank you for coming to my TARD Talk.

ETA, the final final edit: I should mention that four out of the five groups were operating out of already-established Discord servers with more people in the userlist than just the players. I tried to keep my report restricted to mentioning users I knew had signed up to the games, but I may have misattributed one or two things other people in the servers did.

This is something that's likely going to make it into 5th edition. This is due to J. Sambrano being a [former] writer for Werewolf 5th edition. He had pushed this in chats I've seen. He wants "Wendigo" as a name to be gone, as I mentioned a dozen or so pages back. I dunno if he still has influence, but he's convinced a lot of people in the official WoD servers to stop using Wendigo altogether, and many also have stopped using Uktena.

As for "only First Nations people can play" them, I'm one who would encourage people to do their homework on various tribes and cultures, and not come up with "generic Hollywood Injun".

Oh, and Sambrano recently shared this:

No, this was about on average the normal Apocalypse Werewolf player I dealt with in play-by-posts. Only difference was there was less troons and more orbiters and fat chicks. Furry proportion and fetish shit was about right tho.

Troons are a form of Normalites and you can't convince me otherwise.

It's the same crowd that tries to force left-wing political points into Warhammer 40.000, a game about fascists with skull accents killing fascists with spike accents. They don't give a shit about the game or the lore, they just want to see their religion (and make no mistake, it is a religion to these people) being represented in everything they see.

Maybe the difference is that I was talking to these people on voice, so it was a lot easier to clock the troons. Either that or Roll20's community has been completely taken over by the gendercult, which is not unlikely.

The arrogance is a bit of a turn off at times for me. The Nuwisha (and their signature character, Old Man Manyskins) are a hard group to dislike.
Arrogance is fine. If I were an immortal predator who managed to willpower my way out of literal AZN hell, I would be a little cocky too. But the Sabbat does a better job of weeding infernalists out of their ranks than the Kuei-jin has done with the Akuma. And considering that the Yama Kings have a lien on every single Kuei-jin's soul, you'd think they'd be a tad bit more interested in keeping their house free of demonic shit.

Laughing/Old Man Manyskins is funny, especially in Wild West Werewolf. And I may be one of the few people who unironically like Blacktooth, the Simba King of Africa, mainly because, despite genociding the Ajaba, he did what the Garou were supposed to be doing, but better, keeping the nastiest Banes in Africa in check.

If you're going to be an asshole, at least be effective.

My game is run by a ST who is a diagnosed schizophrenic that has to take medication to stabilize, has admitted he has control issues, is an Ainu-Japanese American who despises his former country, and a Communist by ideology; and even HE manages to keep his socio-political spaghetti locked tight in his pockets. How hard is it for these people to pitch their garbage on Flist and quit polluting the pond?
